I've read comics for most of my 50 years, but I've never been able to sink my teeth into X-Men. That said, this run is outstanding, and I will be leveling up my TPBs to the omni.

I can only imagine how great it must have been for you to open this book only to see “Professor Xavier is a jerk!” To have this series start with a reference to your very first X-Men book had to have been surreal. It’s like it was written specifically for you. How cool is that. And how sad is it that I know what your first X-Men book was when I can’t even remember what my first X-Men book was? It must have been Grant Morrison’s New X-Men. But it might have been Bendis’s X-Men (which I still feel is totally underrated. Maybe because it was my first?). Anyway, I’m so glad to have this in oversized. Great book.

If I buy the omnibus I would do that. I personally don't like wraparound covers (Infinite Crisis is the only exception), so most of Marvel's reprinted omnibuses seem like huge drops in quality.

@@frasert8779 2016 was heavy on the X-Men releases (lots of reprints, Uncanny x-men omnibus vol 2 & 3) but this year may top it with throwing in Vol.4 and the Jim Lee Omnis. I would like to have seen a vol.18 on the epic collection side of things though.. That's just picky wishful thinking! One of the best series ever!

Canrlt wait to get this Omni,passed the first time round to prioritise other books as I have all the floppies but I still need this Omni. You're so right about the bit in issue four my damn heart skipped a beat when that character reappeared. Whedon really knows when to hit those emotional beats and stripping the X-Men back to its core and highlighting the unity/family message core to the book so beautifully, just genius!

I pre-ordered the dm variant a few months ago. I mostly collect omni's from the 60's' - '99 but every now & then I'll break my rule & get a modern collection. I find that older material looks best in OHC while modern material looks just as good if not better in digital format.

Wonderful artwork, very beautiful. I only hope they have time to delve deep into the characters, that tends to be a problem with ensemble play. At the moment I'm on a Superman journey and I've read things like Secret Identity, American Alien, Earth One 1-3 and currently Secret Origin, while rewatching Smallville, but then I will read New X-Men and hopefully later Astonishing, although I have a huge pack of books now recommended by you and your friend Omnidog that I bought and that I will have to read first... My library is starting to look really colourful because of all these comic books!

I think binding looks nice! Paper that’s too thick (image) can actually be stiff and make the book harder to read. Too thin isn’t great either though. #papergoldilocks

I'm late commenting on this overview, but great once again, Omar! In the midst of the global pandemic, 2020 is the year I wolf through all of this great X-Men material for the first time (already have read Uncanny Vols 1 and 2, Roy Thomas/Neal Adams X-Men, and now about to start my X-Men Classic Omni. New X-Men by Morrison is on the way, and I found both OHCs of Astonishing X-Men on ebay for a great deal (just under $50 together), so I went ahead and ordered those rather than wait for the Omni. This omni is beautiful, but I love OHCs so I don't regret it.

Nice! I recently picked up X-Men Revolution Omni along with X-Men Eve of Destruction OHC and New X-Men Omni and I’m for sure gonna pick up X-Men vs Apocalypse: The Twelve Omni. So to hear Astonishing X-Men Omni is getting reprinted is really nice to hear. Will make nice to my collection and I’m definitely gonna read it.

Thank God they chose to change the wraparound cover into the magniifcent John Cassaday spread - this is super awesome, I'm so thrilled to see it! I wish they would do the same change for Uncanny X-Force Omni reprint by March. Instead of the white wraparound, I hope we get an Opeña art cover.

Oh man, I totally agree with you on Whedon's X-men. He was the first (and still only at the time of writing this) writer to actually make me *like* Scott Summers. Just loved how he wrote Scott, as well as all the other X-men. Brilliant. I felt vibes of Malcolm Reynolds with Whedon's Scott (coincidence?), and Malcolm is a personal favorite, so that may bias my view on Whedon's take on Scott.

Thank you for preview. I checked some my books and Marvel already printed in "Leo Paper Group" in 2017, it was "Clone Saga vol. 2" and "Deadpool & X-Force" where binding was really tied. Like in the '"older comics" it is not big deal because there are white borders and there are not splash pages, so it doesn't bother so much, but in new it is a "little" problem, personally I buy this books because there wasn't any gutter loose ;-). Unluckily I have preorder many of new books, if I new they changed printing house, I would think twice about it ;-) But there are positives it isn't as bad as it was in "Deadpool & X-Force Omnibus" ;-) Regards.

I think it depends where they get printed. This one was Leo Group.

I find out more books where printed in Leo, Carnage and Wolverine Goes to Hell, the other printing house where they print books R.R. Donnelley, have more elastic material where are pages sewn and it bends really nice, Leo have little thicker paper than Donnelley.

So the new printing has gutter loss and costs more!? Uhh, thinking a pass on this one. I already have the Ultimate Collection versions vol 1 and 2...Rather use the money towards the Uncanny x-force omnibus from Rick and The Wolverine Omnibus.. Iron Man Epic collection war machine is out that day; Hellblazer Garth Ennis Omnibus/ She-Hulk omnibus is out the week after. Getting flooded around that time with all the new releases! Nice vid Omar!

I had the original printing and always felt it was one of the best built omnibus. My hope is that I can go onto Ebay and find a sealed copy of that version for not much more than the reprint. Reprints, have had lower build quality than reprints.

Hell any binding is better than the early Dc omnibuses especially the Hawkman by Geoff Johns omnibus. Even tho it is one of my most beloved books the binding is horrendous. lol

The Whedon xmen run is amazing. I get claremont and movie xmen vibes. Great stuff and the ending battle is badass with all the heroes teaming up and kinda sad with Kitty's predicament at the end. Love John Cassaday's art as well. Can't say enough good things about this run.

Ahhhh Astonishing X-Men. I'm old enough to remenber the excitment auround the book each month when it was coming out. I agree, it's clearly one of my favorite run on X-Men, with some of my favorite moment in x-men history. AXM # 23 being probably one of my favorite X-Men issue of all time. It still gives me chills more than 15 years later : "lies, the great human weapon. What others lies have you told !!!" i can almost quote some dialogues by memory !

DOOD!!! What other lies have you told!!!? How is it that so many writers can get Cyclops so wrong, but in that single issues, hell that last panel of issue 23 Whedon made him a complete badass. My favorite line for me is still: I got two words for you, bub.

@@NearMintCondition Exactly, this book is just shock full of moments like this. Little gems of caracterisation for each member of the team. In cyclops case, I feel Whedon perfectly followed up on the work of Morrison on the character, and that's why I love this issue so much. Finishing this issue on "to me my x-men" was just perfect !

Omar, definitely picking this up. Was it me, or is the reprint colored differently? The reprint seemed a bit more vibrant and lifelike.

I can see why the binding is a bit tighter. Kind of an... "eye opener" for me. Heh. But like you said, not a deal breaker. A bit tighter for that binding but it looks held together. I'm sure once we open the book and do the stretch exercise and read it, it should turn out fine.

I watched the motion comics version, and when finished I continued with issue 25 and it's totally different art and as if they already forgot about Kitty. Am I missing sth? Thanks for everything you offer btw I love comics.

Great review @Omar, thanks a lot. I cannot wait for it. I liked it that besides reviewing the build of the book you also mention something about the story and why you love it so much. I was wondering about the Valiant books quality, in terms of story/art/build. I am completely clueless about it. Are you ever going to review any Valiant hardcover?

Hey Omar, Any chance you can ask David Gabriel why they are using Leo instead of RR Donnelly? The binding on some books such as the Marvel Horror Omnibus really hinders the reading experience. Thanks for the great reviews and announcements.

I've got the old print, and recently when I cracked it open for a re-read, the pages seemed to stick to each other and I had to slowly pry them apart. Realised that the glossy coloured parts of the page were the culprit. Regardless, I'll keep it just cos it was one of my very first few omnis.

You definitely could start here, but I would recommend reading Grant Morrison's New X-Men series first. It directly precedes this, and helps you understand a lot of the characters (mainly Scott and Emma). I haven't finished Whedon's X-Men, but so far I'd say Morrison's is much better. But if you really want, you could totally start here.

Thank you so much for commenting and watching, Carl. This is a tough question. I hate to tell a man on a budget to buy something. But honestly. This is one of my favorite books ever. If I could get five books this year. This would be one of them for sure if I didn't already own it.
