Learn how to draw with one point perspective. In this art tutorial video I use my extensive art teaching experience to show beginners how to draw one point perspective by learning basic techniques in a simple step by step approach. Understanding one-point perspective is important if you are going to draw or sketch buildings or most three dimensional objects in three dimensions. In this art tutorial I explain step by step how eye level is the horizon and how to work out where the vanishing point is, so you can use one point perspective. In this step by step drawing tutorial you will learn how all horizontal lines must go to the vanishing point and all vertical lines must remain vertical.
This art tutorial is aimed at improving the drawing and sketching skills of beginners and those wanting to learn how to improve their drawing skills.

Do you know that you are the only instructor I have seen on videos or in books who ever mentions, let alone emphasizes, that the horizon line is always at eye level? I was trying to follow (draw) along with another video on one-point perspective and could not figure out how he knew where the horizon line was to begin with since there was no horizon (as in a landscape). Finally my husband made a comment that rang a bell-Paul Priestley talked about that! And there it was in my notes from your “Start Drawing: Part 4 - Understanding Eye Level”! How could I forget something that important? It was because, being cooped up inside due to Covid-19, I have not been drawing from real life but rather following examples in lessons. (That alone shows the importance of drawing from life, not just copying pictures.) Now I find that you have lessons on perspective, and there it is presented right at the very start, exactly where it should be-the horizon line is ALWAYS eye level. It makes no difference what your subject is-a lesson I will never again forget. Now, on to your lesson on two-point perspective! You are the best! Thank you so very much for all you efforts.

Thanks! Very useful as always. Forgive a noob question, but how do you decide when/whether to use one point vs two point perspective....

Draw a square and draw a circle in the square so it touches all four sides. Now draw the same square but this time using perspective.n now draw the circle as you did before, it should look 'in perspective' now.

When drawing a room, say from a model, how do you decide where the vanishing point is?
@PaulPriestleyart
@PaulPriestleyart 6 лет назад
The vanishing point is always on eye level and the vanishing point is the spot on that line that is between your eyes. Paul

Hi Paul, I really like your tutorials. This one found me a little confused - when you make the line on the right side for the roof line of the wall it is slightly off from the vanishing point, and I'm wondering if that's deliberate. It looks perfect so could you just explain that one. Thank you Meera
@PaulPriestleyart
@PaulPriestleyart 8 лет назад
+Meera Butalia It should have gone to the vanishing point.

i want to know if the horizon line of the window always need to paralel with the horizon in the room...
@PaulPriestleyart
@PaulPriestleyart 8 лет назад
The horizon line (eye level is an imaginary line that cuts horizontally through your eyes and would equate to the horizontal line on your paper. You judge all other lines in relation to the eyeline. What you see is different to reality for example the window maybe parallel to the floor, but does not look parallel when you look at it from an angle as in the drawing, hence the need for perspective.
