playstation is really good at making single player story games. It’s like nintendo trying to switch from there games to realistic tactile shooters. Playstation should stick with what they are good at.
What’s also great is that the refunds might directly benefit astrobot sales. Although even if all the refunds equated to astrobot sales it would be negligible anyway lol
AAA game with a team of less than 100 people, made in less than 4 years, takes full advantage of the hardware while providing solid performance, amazing haptics that actually enhance gameplay, and utterly unique mechanics. I really hope this game takes off and the industry sees that bigger and shinier does not mean better. We need more unique games built by teams that are enabled to achieve their own vision, not some board or team of investors. The fact that this game is releasing on the day of Concord's shutdown is very bittersweet. I hope Sony (and the rest of the AAA industry) is taking notes, and the sales actually reflect the review scores.
My worry about the entire industry is that this maybe just isn't good enough anymore. Making an amazing single player game that doesn't have microtransactions or live service garbage might just not be enough to keep AAA companies growing/stockholders happy. Which could explain why these companies are all scrambling to make Live Service games that literally no one wants... because it is the only option left... I am kinda worried we are in a bubble and the video game industry is going to crash again...
I have a 4 year old and 5 year old who LOVED playing Astro's Playroom. As soon as I heard about this game, I pre-ordered. We moved their beds into the living room and gamed late into the night with them. It was such a joy to see them actually be able to play a game that's fun and engaging and simply, just joyful. Sure, there were game references they were missing (although they did see Aloy and screamed it out), they are experiencing what I also consider to be the best part about gaming. The mechanics of using light to find hidden platforms, seeking out hidden worlds, and even taking leaps of faith have all brought me right back to playing Super Mario Bros in 1995. It sounds silly, but it almost brings tears to my eyes seeing my boys experience the magic of games that I remember from playing Super Mario Bros on SNES all those years ago. Now, when they're not playing, they're running around playing 'pretend Astro's' and it just warms my heart. One of my boys when I tucked him in last night said, "Brother and I are going to make video games. He'll do the music and I'll do the game." If that's not what life is about, I'm not sure what is. I'm glad you saw the joy of this game too. It's a beautiful game during a weird time in gaming and a brilliant reminder of why gaming can be so incredible. Wish you the best John and DF!
I really don’t get why some people remark that this is a case of gameplay > graphics. This game is absolutely gorgeous, runs like a charm and oozes effects.
I dont care about graphics if they cant be even properly displayed like recent wu kong or star wars outlaws on ps5. Maybe they are more advanced but for what? Terrible image quality and unstable framerates. Astro bot looks Way better to me just bcs of this. There is something special in clean looking game without weird problems. Feels Just good to play and to look at. Who cares about some rt effects when the whole image looks like some low bitrate tv show.
While I do think Astro Bot is fucking gorgeous. I disagree on the level of whiplash you speak of, I think the level of polish is so high on Odyssey. I am still wowed by it, even with the hardware limitations it looks incredible. The Switch was weak back in 2017, Nintendo knew what they were doing. Sure the render resolution is lower, poly count, LOD, everything .... along with none of the showy physics, but taken in context with the power of a 2017 system on a chip, I still can't help think it looks anything other than miraculous.
@@alexandercheskis I'm not saying that Odyssey doesn't look good (especially for the hardware it's running on) but when you put it side by side with Astrobot it's very apparent they're generations apart.
@@alexandercheskisit looks good but astrobot is way superior in everything textures, assets, polygon counts, physics, particles basically high end ps3 vs high end ps4 visuals
Goes to show that high powered hardware CAN help enable experiences not feasible to achieve on lower-end kit. Wish Nintendo would go back to stepping it up in that space.
It's because all the tech is being used for interactive purposes like a game should! They finally took the right page out of Nintendo's book. It looks like everything serves the playing experience.
@@sparrowcd This is it. Gaming is all about the player experience. Games like this, Nintendo & Fromsoft titles, BG3, they all center players in the experience.
such physics with such number of particles without dipping the frame rate or not even going below 1440p in resolution is by itself an enormous achievement
@@MetalDeathHead The VR game gave me headaches, having it not on VR is better for most people, I still enjoyed the VR game like crazy and of course 100% it

Mid 30s here, and I find the hype difficult to comprehend. I had some fun with the Playroom and VR games - they were neat but they came bundled with hardware and this looks more of the same to me. More perplexing is how something so cutesy and aesthetically aimed at children can have grown adults falling over themselves to play .
@@jez49647 If you own a Ps5, I would say give it a chance. There’s an AstroBot game that came with the console, and it really took me (and apparently many others) by surprise. This sequel looks much the same, and better. I think the most appealing thing is it’s not another grim, walk & talk like The Last of Us. Nor a reflex-intensive soulslike-slog. @@Luke973T Nintendo's entire ideology concerning gaming is Sage-like. That's why they are ALWAYS able to bounce back from failures, ALWAYS revitalizing & inspiring the industry, and Always able to stay relevant.
@@DanFarrell98 I'm glad you asked. It's a good question, not exactly easy to define, and ultimately subjective, hence the quotation marks. Nevertheless, here's my definition, which may be true for others, but not everyone... By the "Spirit of Gaming" I'm referring to the joy of interacting with the medium. What you DO in games, HOW you do it, and how seamlessly your input (via the controls) channels your intent, and finally, the FEEDBACK (audio-visual), that makes the things you do all the more satisfying. Things like elaborate stories, hyper realistic graphics, extensive motion captured dialogue/cut scenes, etc, while they have their place, only matter once you have all the core stuff (mentioned earlier) in place. Yet, today, studios are doubling down on the latter as the foundation of their games. Budgets are thorough the roof for games that are ultimately a drag to play. Average experiences at best. Those things that actually make the game fun/enjoyable to play are what, I feel, collectively emits the "Spirit of Gaming." Even if one can't grasp what I'm getting at, one look at Astro Bot in action, and it's easy to walk away with the impression of: "This looks fun to PLAY!" That is what gaming was always about, and Truly IS about!
They should make LOW BUDGET FUN GAMES. Y’all remember LBP ? Gravity Rush ? Sly cooper and Jak and Daxter ? Those games weren’t expensive third person movie like games , they were just plain FUN and ENJOYABLE experiences. I wish they make more of these games. I hope astro shows them that not every game needs to be a movie like TPS
I don't have a PS5, but I saw some gameplay from this. To be completely honest, with all the absolute trash we've been getting the last several years, this is unbelievably refreshing and puts a genuine smile on my old, jaded face. What a wholesome game.
I’ve been gaming since the 90s and sure it’s had the usual ups and downs but there have been many fantastic games this current generation wether it’s Returnal, Rebirth, The Medium, Plague Tale, Dead space remake, RE4 Remake, Rift Apart, Hell Let Loose, Baldurs Gate 3, the list goes on. It’s always shocking to me when people claim this generation hasn’t had any good games
@@esho6460 Hey, no one said there hasn't been any good games this generation. I said that there was a lot of trash, not that everything now is trash. A day one purchase for me. This game just looks engineered to make people feel joy and I hope Sony gets the most out of Team Asobi. Games like this are really needed considering this generation is quickly being defined by overinvesting on games that don't meet their audiences in the middle, especially in light of recent developments

I wanted to wait for a sale, but I’m seriously considering buying it full price, just to send Sony the message that we WANT these kind of games and not their live-service nonsense.
Genshin’s a pretty fun platformer. It’s open world and has combat, but the focus on exploration and verticality makes it feel like a classic collectathon.

@happygofishing you mean like wukong, god of war, last of us etc? Hell yeah we want games like this. I want my game to look amazing graphically and play great. Don't see what the problem is. Thank god for sony Studios.
They didn't need to place individually modeled plants on the ground, or create a physics interaction with curtains. They literally paid people to create details that don't really matter in the end, and that's how you know they loved what they created and didn't just shovel out crap for a cash grab. In an era full of half assed games and micro transactions, what they've created is absolutely incredible, and their desire to make art far outside the effects of profit is commendable. That's awesome
As a PlayStation fan I hope this game sends a message to Sony that these are the type of games we want, they should stick to their single player franchises and if they want to do multiplayer they should just revive Killzone or Resistance.
Concord would have done fine if it launched as a free to play title, whoever was in charge of the business side of things needs to be fired because they have no idea what they’re doing.
@@DoritosBurger Maybe but I don’t think that would’ve been enough, most people are already tired of these type hero shooter games not to mention how woke the game was.

I get weirdly emotional when I see this game. It just full of love en joy. You can feel the developers were passionate and caring. This game just shows what we lost in most big budget games of today. What a fantastic piece of work. I really hope this game will do well.
Jeff Grubb made a point about being emotional near the end of his playthrough. Humorous to think that a game with no story can generate such an emotional reaction far more than a AAA story heavy title.
I totally get what you mean. Astro's Playroom just gave a warm feeling to literally everyone I showed it to, and boy did I show that game to people. The way they riff on and blend inspiration from so many games going back to the N64 is impressive.. I'm getting Odyssey and Banjo Kazooie vibes IN THE SAME SCENE!
I think the visuals look excellent. I'm really tired of games coming out with 720P resolutions, just so they can incorporate poor quality ray tracing or other technologies. Nintendo prove time and again that art design is the most important and glad to see that Team Asobi have gone the same route. Cant wait to play this tomorrow
Right?? After so many games coming out that look like muddy trash (Jedi:Survivor, FF7R, Wukong etc. etc.) I’m glad there is finally a game where I don’t want to rip my eyes out.
Also baked lighting. If your game works with static lighting, baked lighting can look incredibly good, even realistic if you desire. Paper Mario Origami King looks absolutely amazing because the lighting is baked. Like a real tiny paper diorama (shame about the awful combat though.)
Games used to look amazing with baked lighting. But then more and more games became open world with the sun moving through the sky, rendering baked lighting unusable. If it wasn't for that, most games would be full on 4k or 60fps. Look how great and realistic last of us 2 looks and yet it had no ray tracing and it came out on ps4
It's amazing how much better this game looks than the last set of games DF has reviewed. No muddy textures. No flickery pixelated edges. I don't have a Playstation but I'd definitely be picking this up if I did.

I think this will be 'remembered' as the LOST GENERATION... The consoles just aren't powerful enough to handle PROPER 'Next Gen' experiences. So all the games are either Poorly Performing attempts to feature advanced features. Or 'Cross Platform' games that can run just fine on PS4, and only get a slight resolution/frame rate bump on PS5. That UE5 'Matrix Game' demo was such a TEASE!
@@StreetPreacherr Personally, I'm fine with the latter. Giant generation leaps are a thing of the distant past, and "last-gen games, but uncompromised and running properly now" is about all I'd hope for at this point.
@@StreetPreacherrnot just that it can’t handle what we perceive to be ‘next-gen’, but also a degrade on the AAA industry that really accelerated in this gen. what happened in the industry is they just use the latest engine (like unreal 4 or 5) and create generic games and call it a day. Gaming is no longer about gaming. This game is absurdly gorgeous and alive. If this studio had a chance of expanding into a racing game, I would imagine that game to be just as flawless
I mean, they certainly do appear to be very talented at making tons of unique enviroments/themes, so they could probably UNIRONICALLY make a good arcade racer. Especially since Arcade Racers can definitely have simpler controls while still having a lot of complexity. Mario Kart (while it does have more mechanics nowadays), as an example, isn't particularly complex in regards to controls, but there are still tons of cool techniques that pros tend to use.
@@riskyworks Unfortunately, Mario Kart, while being a good "kart game" won't translate too well to a more traditional "arcade racer game." They've tried it before with Blur and Split/Second, both flopped. The Mario Kart whole gameplay is based more on weapons and resource management than actually driving or racing. Yes, you would need a good driving skills to ace Mario Kart, but to just have fun and play you actually don't really need it. While an arcade racer would still need to heavily focus on the driving itself. Making an arcade racer into kart-style with weapons and boost pads only makes it to be a kart game. Through interpolation, perhaps, we'll have to see if they have the software to utilise the machine learning block in that way. To get 120 with raw frames, the CPU boost must be too small, right?
I would be playing this game right now, but the fucker who delivered my copy threw it at the door and caused a crack in the case, so now I'm waiting for my replacement. To say I am pissed off would be an understatement.
