@@colinsouthern oh I can definitely relate, sometimes it does feel like trying to shoot an ICBM through a torpedo tube. But that Taco Bell experience was kind of different from that, more of a combination of high velocity and maximum fragmentation, without losing any of its lethality though.
Suggestion for a video. That pool is supposed to be able to drain in like 30 seconds or something. If they ever test the emergency drain system it would be really cool to see!
You can!!!! Of course you have to pay to take an offshore survival course but you can swim in this pool as a civilian!!! Speak g from experience it's amazing!!!!!!!
As a recreational scuba diver, I would LOVE to dive in this pool and explore the mock-up is the ISS. I know I will never get to go to space, but that would be a reasonably close experience. Unfortunately, I have the same chance of doing that as I do going to space. Zero.
I weirdly find it hard to get my head around the fact that the spacesuit is waterproof. I know it can survive a vacuum, but when he’s getting lowered into the pool I feel like he must feel the water haha
Destin, do you realize that you released your video in direct competition with an actual live RU-vid broadcast from NASA of a spacewalk that is happening right now? What a choice - watch training in the neutral buoyancy pool, or watch the real thing live from space? :) :)
The streams come with the in-walk entertainment that is watching the live chat. Pro-Tip: Set it to 'All Chat' instead of 'Top Chat' to really see the unfiltered madness. I struggle to believe it came from the same planet as the astronauts up there doing work.
As someone else mentioned, you can see he was tempted to at first. But a thumbs up is the SCUBA signal for "ascend" and probably not a good sign to throw up in the middle of being lowered.
I think that's a new record, Destin. This footage waited 6 years before being released. I think waiting until the astronaut was in space before releasing it was part of the reason, but I'm actually impressed to how just how much material you have!
Hey Destin, thank you for visiting us at the NBL! Ike is a beast and I'm glad you got a chance to see him in training. Now we get to see him fly around the moon next year! come back and see what all we have developed in the pool!
WOW what are the chances. like a few weeks ago i was wanting more information on this place and it was hard to find good content than you come post this. TYSM for your dedication to content like this, you make so many people happy
This is so cool. My first job after graduating from Iowa State, with a degree in civil engineering, was work for a big bridge contractor, here in Dallas, TX. 90% of what I did was structural engineering, designing formwork and shoring systems, critical beam lifts, etc. We put a bid in on excavating and building the giant swimming pool that became this lab. I remember working with our estimating department to develop work plans and formwork systems for the concrete placement. On a side note, at that time we did mot have any computers in our engineering department; everything was calced by hand and drawn on drafting tables. Things we can do now, in a matter of minutes, may have taken me a day of drawing shear and bending moment diagrams, running moment distributions, etc. on. 50 or 60 sheets of engineering paper! My HP 11C got so much use, some of the ink is worn off the buttons. So glad, though, that I earned my P.E. license in those days; I definitely learned a lot about problem solving.
Dang I hate to be that guy, but it's about time!! I was excited for this video when it was announced with the Space Month thing you did a while back with Scott Kelly! Glad to finally see something about the pool!
Thank you for sharing this, Destin! I imagine you just got a call and ran down with a camera. I love how humble you are and how flexible everyone there are. ALSO question, the little monitor you guys were watching at the end looked like a 10 yr old tv. How come they don't upgrade some of that stuff, to see better? ALSO ALSO, you ever imagine Samsung or someone would sponsor these guys with some better gear, like they sponsor RU-vidrs? :D Anyways, good night from Norway. Thanks again for these shorts and unedited videos! Wholesome :3
I just got on a student engineering project prototyping sample bag holders for the Artemis moon missions that will be tested at the NBL. I'm so excited!
If one day Destin were to write or make a video of his life it would be the greathest biography like imagine writing about all the cool stuff he has seen and all the cool stuff he has created just amazing
Apparently my dad did plumbing work on this pool subcontracted by Boeing Air. He said that many parts where made at location too because of the high standards and in general everything was highly regulated. In his opinion, beyond necessity, such as painting the pvc to remove the lettering. This was about 1985
Destin: We're gonna go see an astronaut get suited up right here... Me: oooh that sounds interesting, I'd love to see that. Video: Immediately cuts to astronaut already suited up and ready to go. Me: Wut. Aww mannn...
@@moshereitberger nobody said that, I just thought it would've been cool to see an astronaut suiting up with Destin narrating. If that's not cool enough for you and you need CGI and special effects, then I don't know what is.
