Father’s Day this year is June 16, 2024. Looking for gift ideas for an astronomy lover? In this video, we’ll discuss binoculars for stargazing, telescopes under $500, stargazing accessories, and books. Note: I’m just trying to be helpful here. The All-Star Telescope links are affiliate links, but feel free to find these products anywhere; I won’t mind.
Here is B&H Photo's used telescopes page. Generally, there are a few good deals to be found here. Currently, there is an 8-inch Dobsonian for under $400. The best strategy is to have the telescope you want already in mind and then keep refreshing (once per day, perhaps) until it shows up. Don’t just buy the first cheap telescope you see (feel free to ask me [in the comments] if it’s any good).

I like my 2x. In my moderately light polluted skies, they're really helpful locating

Congrats on the scope. I recommend you get the Celestron 6.3 Focal Reducer. It will increase the field of view and make some DSO's (nebula, galaxies, etc.) a little brighter when used with a 25mm or 32mm eyepiece. Remove it when looking at the planets.

The $50 binoculars don't have much eye relief. If you wear glasses, it's best to get an eye relief of 17-20mm if you want to use them with your glasses on. "Turn Left at Orion" is the book I recommend.

I have to say one thing. Use an EQ mount only if you want to practice astro photography or you have a telescope with f8 or more, because with an AZ mount is really really stressful find objects; Az mount with f4-5-6 is much easier. My first telescope was a celestron 60mm f12 in the '90s and I hated so much that I forgot astronomy for years because I was never able too see even the moon...for a young boy that was the worst.

Awesome vid. Im here to plug celestron starsense dx5. This thing has so much going for it. Extremely lightweight, compact, good optics. Starsense is fast to use, all though it has some small problems. Main issue is the light pollution. If you are near a street light or any light source, starsense cant find the telescope. Im going to 3d print higher sides, so the mirror dont get extra light. I have taken it to road trips, local astro club meetings.amazing telescope.

John those 2x Galileo style binos are awesome! I find that if you are not using a goto system and you are in light polluted skies you can use those binos to star hop. Due to their low power and design I am able to hold them behind the red dot finder on the telescope and still see both the red dot and the sky at the same time. I then can move the red dot to the location (the location I normally could not see) of the object I am looking for. Its like turning Bortle 8 to Bortle 4.

A lithium power bank is another useful astronomy accessory especially if you need to power a startracker for several hours.

I’ve only gotten into the hobby during the pandemic so as a very recent beginner myself, I’d say if your budget permits, the Celestron Starsense Explorer scopes are game changers. They make finding objects a joy instead of a challenge and you can see almost any object easily that would otherwise require advanced level of star hopping skills or expensive goto mounts for which leveling and aligning the mount comes with its own set of challenges and learning curves, and are also not entirely accurate. With a dobsonian mount and starsense, I can be observing the night sky like a seasoned vet in matter of minutes.

I recently bought a StarSense DX6. StarSense works so great, that I can observe all the objects from the recommended list in almost no time without any efforts. I feel that some fun is lost now - no efforts means no achievements :(

I have one small question when i get my telescope will it need collimation instantly? Or it will be collimated?
@LearnToStargaze
@LearnToStargaze Месяц назад
You should check the collimation with your eye when it arrives. If it needs it, it needs it. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t.
