Three years ago I made an astrophotography lens guide and ever since I've received dozens of requests for a more detailed, updated guide for 2020. In this video I provide a comprehensive list of my favorite astrophotography lenses for full frame, APS-C, and Micro 4/3 cameras, rating each lens and giving my thoughts and opinions for each.
Although I have used most lenses on this list, if you have your own thoughts about a specific lens or want to provide testimonial for a lens you thought should have made the list, make sure to leave a comment below. Also, like always, your feedback on my videos is always appreciated - I am working to the improve the channel with every video, so I will read and respond to your criticisms and/or suggestions sincerely.
On my newly-created Apalapse website I wrote up a more detailed article describing these lenses but with links to factual, scientific reviews, more of my own thoughts, and even some other lenses that I didn't have time to mention in the video. Read it here: bit.ly/3nmyITq
Also, I apologize for my infrequent uploads. I was pretty uprooted when the pandemic struck and along with a summer internship, it was hard for me to find time to create videos. I will try and resume monthly uploads moving forward, but please understand that because I do not take any sponsorships nor make money from affiliate partnerships/links, my RU-vid channel is solely a passion project for me - I receive little to no financial gain.

As some have pointed out I forgot to include Fujifilm lenses to my list. That was by mistake, and there are fuji lenses that are suitable for astro. Instead of taking down the video and re-uploading it with those lenses I will add them here and on the article found on my website. Here are three native Fuji lenses that are suitable for astro: Fujifilm XF 14mm f2.8 R Fujifilm XF 18mm f2.0 R Fujifilm XF 23mm f1.4 R All the DSLR-mounted APS-C lenses can also be adapted for Fuji along with the DSLR-mounted full-frame lenses. Some have also asked for Pentax lenses, and I will add those to my website article.

I was wondering if you've ever tried a catadioptric lens with your camera for astrophotography. On paper, anyway, they seem like an ideal solution for those of use using star trackers with limited payload capacity: smaller and lighter than higher focal length prime telephoto lenses, and able to get to very high focal lengths. Don't see any reviews of them with cameras, though, so I'm a bit skeptical. Just wondering if you've had any experience with them. Thanks!
@alandyer910
@alandyer910 3 года назад
Thanks for the survey. Just a suggestion - Some of the photos of lenses in the video don’t match the text so it’s sometimes not clear what lens you are actually talking about. Also, I suspect most nightscapers would take exception to you disparaging their favourite Nikon 14-24mm zoom for DSLRs 😉. It’s been used to take more classic nightscape images than most of the lenses on your recommended list. The new Z mount version is better but that’s true of most of the new mirrorless lenses outperforming the older DSLR versions of the lenses.

Hey thanks so much for the very useful and educational video. I am currently trying out a more telephoto approach on astrophotography. I am quite happy with the results I get from my Canon EF 100mm F2.8 Macro L, but I am wondering if I might get better results with a Sigma 85mm F1.4 Art. I am searching for a lens that has far less aberrations than the Sigma 35mm F1.4 towards the edges of the frame. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Thanks for these recommendations. It is clear that you spent a lot of time into this video and I appreciate it. I was wondering if you have heard much about the Sony 55mm 1.8's performance in terms of astro? I am trying to decide if I should go for the Sony 55mm 1.8 or the Sigma Art 50mm 1.4. The Sigma is just so much bigger with the E mount adapter. Thanks!

This has become my go-to guide for astro lens as I'm looking ahead to investing in one. As a Nikon shooter, it does put a little bit of sour taste in my mouth. Can you elaborate on how their prime lens are bad for astro in general? And what would be the very best lens with a native mount for Nikon shooter in your opinion, or do folks like me should just adapt something from Canon/Sony?

This is a great summary! As a suggestion for a possible future video, the recently released Sigma 35mm f2 (Sony and L mount) has treated me pretty well for astro. Wide open, it seems to be even sharper than my Tamron 17-28, and corrects for everything but vignetting really well; stopped down to f2.8, it's even better. It's a great alternative to the sony 35mm f1.8, which has really bad coma wide open. I've also liked what I've seen with the Tamron 17-28, but the sigma was a bit of a surprise since it's not too expensive.

I have just really enjoyed watching your review of astro lens. I'm a beginner at night time photography, for the last few years I've been shooting landscape and my kit lens is a Nikon 18mm-140mm and it has served me well, and macro Tamron 90mm latest model which I love using. I was thinking of getting the sigma 35mm f1.4, bye the way I have two Nikon D5600 so not full frame, for star shoots but also using it for city nights along with other daylight shots. I'm looking and want to buy something that I can use over and over again, in other words, a one time purchase so while I was thinking of the Sigma 35mm f1.4 but also the Sigma 40mm f1.4 that has a 5* ratting from every review I have seen so far. Could I ask for your input please, I do have the budget for the 40mm.

Welcome back🙏🏻🙏🏻. Loved your detailed videos and thank you for the great content. I am getting sony a7iii and was wondering if I should get the kit (28-70mm) lens. I want to stat with one lens mainly for night sky photography but for normal daily photography as well. Which lens would you recommend upto $600 budget? Thanks again🙏🏻
@Apalapse
@Apalapse 3 года назад
Thanks for the kind words! I'm assuming the 28-70 mm lens you're referring to is the Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS (reviewed here: www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Sony-FE-28-70mm-f-3.5-5.6-OSS-Lens.aspx)? If so, then I would not recommend this lens since its optical performance is pretty poor compared to what you could by for $600. I would recommend the Sigma A 24-70 mm f/2.8 DG DN if you can expand your budget to around $900. The Tamron 28-75 mm f/2.8 Di III RXD has good center resolution performance but astro performance is not great. It is within your $600 budget, though. Another recommendation would be to look for a Tamron 15-30 mm f/2.8 which are selling for around $500 on eBay (www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=tamron+15-30mm+f2.8&_sacat=0&rt=nc&LH_Sold=1&LH_Complete=1). Pair that with a cheap adapter so that you can use it with the Sony, and you have an amazing astro setup. Also, a little "hack" you can use is buying one of these lenses on Amazon brand new to test it out, then returning it within 30 days. That way you can "rent" the lens for free (minus the upfront cost) and see if you like the optical quality.

Have you ever tested the Laowa 100mm 2.8 lens for astrophotography? It is a manual focus 2x magnification macro lens that also focuses to infinity. I am considering purchasing the lens for macro images, but if it also produces terrific astro images... well then it is a no brainer for me since I have a wide range of photography interests.

Thank for your video! How's about the Sigma 20mm 1.8 Ex DG? Is that suitable for astrophoto? Any pros and cons for consideration?

about to snipe a 40mm f/1.4 art on eBay since I saw great reviews and apparently it can just be used wide open lol. the 24mm rokinon 1.4 I got off amazon was a gem. I must've gotten lucky because it's SO sharp with ZERO CA, coma, astigmatism at f/2.8 on a tracker. really good value

I've got the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8, it's great for the crop cameras. It also can be used on a fullframe at 16 mm, but the corners become VERY blurry... though not so bad for reports, weddings, etc.

Glad it's a good option! It's mostly designed for APS-C cameras and has good performance on crop sensors.

Hi Vincent, I was wondering if you could give me your thoughts on Soviet MTO mirror lenses for Astrophotography. I can buy a 500mm f/8 mirror by MTO for $200 or so, and I'm tempted because they basically look like mini-Maksutovs, which I know make sharp images when used as telescopes
