Dear Cuiv, you knocked it out of the park!!! Just what I needed. I have been struggling a lot with the mini PC when I’m in the wild… I’ve tried everything, even bought a mobile wifi to use with team viewer but in some places with no connection it was a nightmare. I come from AsiAir but I “evolved” to NINA thanks to you and Chad from Patriot Astro…Thanks a lot ;) Just a quick note, I had to add my user to the Remote Desktop connection group otherwise It wouldn’t work for me, but after that it was all OK. Really appreciate it!

Big thanks from me too Cuiv for this. I was using a Raspberry Pi 4 running Astroberry which worked very well and was pretty easy to setup with a hotspot and VNC connecting both with a Win 7 laptop & an iPad. Then I bought a SBC mini PC running Windows 10 Pro because I wanted to try NINA. I was completely befuddled attempting to setup the wireless connection for use at my dark site in the UK and I gave up trying, I even bought a little 12V wireless travel router to see if that would help solve my problems Thanks to this video I’ll give it another go with your recommendations. Windows! Aaaaggghhh….!!!! All the best, Pete.

Thank you so much I just set this up. Thanks to you . One thing you are probably doing yourself because you are smart. Is running a task scheduler. My son created a task scheduler routine that turns on the hotspot on boot up and the every 10 minute after should it shut off. I’m new to Nina and my reason for it leaving the Asiair is having synchronized dithering on my side by side set up. Talk about jumping in both feet.

Thanks Cuiv -- I fumbled my way to build a somewhat similar setup, but nice to see all the steps laid out so clearly. The hoops you went through to automate a persistent, remote hotspot were very cool. In a pinch you can also run an ethernet cable directly from your laptop/desktop to the remote PC (if you can stand an extra cable hanging from the scope ;).
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek Год назад
That's a good possibility as well :)

Thanks for the video! The hotspot was one major annoyance that I had, your solution seems better than the shell scripts that I was using. I eventually ended up buying a little GL.iNet travel router, which had the added advantage that I can connect multiple rigs to it and remote in to all of them with just one PC connected to the router, instead of having to connect to each mount PC's hotspot separately and also allows me to hardwire the mounts and PC via Ethernet in case I'm at a star party, outreach session, or somewhere else with WiFi congestion. And then after thinking about how much gear I have in my setup anyway, I just used an old full sized router, which has much better range. For a multiple mount setup in the field, I suppose you could also run the hotspot on the controlling PC and have the mount PCs auto connect to it, might be convenient especially if you named it the same as your home WiFi network.

I bought a Mele Quieter3Q three month ago, I wanted to use the dynamic flatpanel brightness offered by NINA - the best decision I’ve ever made in my 5 year astro journey. It simply works like a charm. I added a 128GB NVMe SSD, made it the boot/WIN11 drive on the system, the onboard 128GB eMMC is acting as extra drive space.

Hi Cuiv, Another great video that I find very helpfull on your channel. To be honest, I followed the one you already did before in the past. And I find one thing very usefull missing: add all the picture in Nina for offline framing... it's not useful on your balcony, sure, but it's great to help framing when you're in the middle of the fields... :) Patriot Astro (you mentioned him in the video) has a great demonstration how to do it! Thanks again for your work!
@stephanep1330
@stephanep1330 Год назад
Ho, also... I find the range of the wifi of these mele quieter 2 PC very poor... a few meters away and it's working intermittently... I find it much easy (lazy?) to buy a 20$ xiaomi router that also works on 12V close to the rig. This way, no need to worry about the hotspot... and the extra range allows you to watch a movie in your car when you're in the fields, while having the remote desktop connection active! :)

Cuiv, thanks for the video. I tried unsuccessfully to get the new ASIair+ 256GB to talk to my AVX mount. The ASIair+ is supposed to be "Easy as 1-2-3" but it wasn't for me. I bought a MeLE Quieter3Q and installed NINA using another process from Patriot Astro but I will add your hotspot and plug-in recommendations to my install. Thus far, I've had no issues with NINA. The only issue I've had is over two weeks of cloud cover with no clear skies at night. Hopefully, that will change this week and I can get my setup outside.

The faff of Windows being Windows is the sole reason I can understand why people own an ASI Air haha. That said, I loooove mini PC + NINA. It’s just such a powerful bang for buck solution that outperforms pretty much everything else. Really good video Cuiv, you are excellent at staying objective while giving clear and concise information on the deeper parts of astro. You show what can be done with just a bit more effort and time and THAT imho is the key to astrophotography... putting in the effort to learn the difficult stuff. That way you come away with more skills that are important to problem solving and getting a better understand of how things work. This will allow the future you to start changing settings and developing your own ways instead of copying others.

Great video Quiv, will be interesting for a lot of people, it helped me with the hotspot. I've always been imaging with the laptop but since beginning this year I bought a Quiter3. I've set it completely up with the help off Chad (Patriot Astro) his videos, they also are very helpful and mostly going deeper in certain things, he helped me a lot, great guy. But I was missing that one thing, to make a hotspot, so now it's completely done and I can make my second mini pc. But must say that I've had some serious problems with my QHY Polemaster running under Win11, I had to set some things in the bios to make it work, and now it seems to work fine. Now I only need clear skies, it(s been very very bad this year, only had 5 clear nights since the start of 2023, really not motivating ... Thanks again for making these great and very interesting videos Quiv, keep up the good work

Great video as usual Cuiz! Without going through the rigmarole of turning the 'hot spot' on in Windows (which I didn't know btw thank you) there's an app that I bought called Connectify that allows you to create a 'hot spot' from the word go. I actually bought the app but never got around to using it as I bought an Eagle 4S more or less straight after buying Connectefy - the Eagle creates its own network

Something worth mentioning for those coming from a laptop to a mini PC. You can save a whole heap of time by just duplicating your SSD / HDD windows & program installs onto another drive and then putting that in the mini PC.

Nice info on the hotspot as I was just wondering how this could be done with my NUC. Great timing Cuiv! One comment specific to the SCT/Celestron Focus Motor - I finally took the time to look at the Celestron Focuser on my C9.25 Edge in terms of the direction of rotation when the Backlash in NINA is set to IN vs. OUT It is my understanding that you want the last turn on an Celestron SCT to be CCW which pushes the mirror "uphill" and against gravity. I found that at least for my setup - when the Backlash was set to OUT - the last turn was CW. Changed to IN and then it was CCW. Just a recent observation as I had mine originally set to OUT in NINA.

Hi Cuiv! Always interesting as usual! To get an hotspot on the mini - PC, even if I am on the wild, I use an application called connectify (the hotspot max lifetime version). Not free but not really expensive : around 35 euros for 3 lifetime licences... I may check your alternative. Regards from France

Hi Cuiv, great video and it comes at the right time. I've setup a similar set last week, but can improve it with some of your hints. My idea to connect the mini PC with my laptop was through a smartphone hotspot, but I also haven't checked the performance yet. So I think your approach with the hotspot turned on on the device is the better and straight forward one. However, did you try tools like MyPublicWiFi or mHotspot? They're free of charge and may have the same features. I'll give them a chance when I'll fine a couple of minutes next days...

I came from the Raspberry Pi / Kstars/Ekos world (as my available main computers were MacOS or Linux). It mostly worked well for a few years. A used Windows laptop came my way (free, who can say no?) so I thought I would try NINA having heard so much about it. I bought a BeeLink Mini-S on sale with W11 and installed the software to give NINA a try (GSS, PHD2, Astap, Ascom). Some of your existing NINA videos along with Patriot Astro's videos provided the information I needed to get up and running. Having used it for a month or so now (half dozen clear nights) as well as making calibration files during the day, I have to wonder why I didn't tgo this route sooner. TI find the Flats Wizard especially is a real improvement over that in EKOS in controlling my DIY flat panel. I'm just starting to get comfortable with the (Advanced) Sequencer. I do believe I will stay with this setup now.

Another nice video, thanks Cuiv! And FYI, the QHY All In One driver installer has "NINA" as a 3rd party app because the installer will go ahead and put the QHY native NINA drivers in the NINA installation directory automatically. That's not so important for QHY guide cameras since you're unlikely to want to access your guide camera from NINA, but for imaging cameras it's nice to have the latest native NINA drivers that QHY puts in their installer installed to the NINA program directory.

Thanks Cuiv! You shared this at just the right time for me. I'm planning a trip out West next year when I retire. I've been worried about backup to my Lenovo computer in case it failed. I now know the right path is to go the mini-PC step and use my existing laptop for backup. I was wondering if the images at the end were on your home PC that was connected to the hotspot? I'm assuming I could use my IPad to connect to the hotspot and monitor the images that way as needed? Thanks again!

Man, I only clicked on this because I wanted to know what you do differently, but I actually didn't know Windows could do this hotspot thing. I've been so frustrated with bad wifi in the garden outside and doing the remote desktop. I technically do have wifi there, and it's enough to check things every now and then, but it'll completely break down if 2 devices are there (laptop and the minipc ofc). You're actually a lifesaver (by accident)! Also you forgot to blur your Latitude and Longitude at 37:44

Great tutorial, thank you! Just a heads up, the ProgramData folder is hidden, so you need to have set Windows Explorer to show hidden files in order to see it. This stumped me for a couple of minutes... you may want to add a subtitle to the screen (circa 14:25)

Hi Cuiv, i am not sure why you had such a poor experience with remote desktop as it is usually fairly painless. you don't need to worry about the password once you have set it all up and checked remember connection on your host PC. I love the video as i am just moving over from an ASAIR plus that i have been using on my EQ8-R Pro and want more funstionality so your timing is perfect. You have been smashing it recently with these genuinely useful tutorials. Keep it up and don't burn out :D

Thanks Andrew! Oh Remote Desktop will just work IF the Windows-created hotspot is up. The problem is that Windows categorically refuses to create a hotspot on a PC that doesn't have Internet connectivity (unless a specific option is available in the network driver and enabled via command line). So third party software is needed for this (usually)

Fantastic video! This makes astro imaging so much easier. Only issue I had was the hotspot on the minipc does not appear to allow connection to android devices so I must either use another pc(laptop) for remote access or have an accesable wifi signal(not an android hotspot) to use android for remote. Hopefully I(or somebody) can find a workaround as mobile devices are so convenient. Still....a mini pc on mount and a remote laptop is still miles easier than my prior full time wire connected laptop and a brainless mount!!!

Wow, another amazing video, Cuiv! :-). I know it is subjective but, would you say that, for imaging in the field/wild, accesing a mini PC with NINA with a mobile device would be comfortable? I am trying to decide on how to set it all up, honestly also seriously considering Stellarmate for its already implemented mobile app and for the Ekos native layout/themes. For now, the RDP apps I have tried on Android do not allow for zooming gesture with fingers. Only VNC but then, I found it not so reliable and smooth with VNC services. And I find the NINA buttons and fonts a bit small without zooming. I have an illness in my back and love the idea of a lightweight setup and using the mobile app with big fonts and the like but, at the same time, I am unsure that I would end up missing the experience of a laptop,a bigger screen, mouse, keyboard, and all the incredible NINA features like bathinov analysis, flat field wizard, integration with other planetarium options, manual rotator, exposure calculator, dithering finetuning, focus star, and so on. I don't know why but I feel I would only enjoy NINA from a computer/laptop and not from a smartphone/tablet.

Hey Cuiv great video I've recently bought the Quieter 3C & were having issues with the wifi so I'm hoping after watching your video it will help address that part, setting up NINA etc I've found to be a doddle in the past it's just remoting to it from a different device that I struggle with. I plan to make a start setting it up this week so fingers crossed I will manage it. Just don't go burning yourself out & head for another slump though take some time out & relax for a bit as we'll all be here when you get back. As much as I like the ASi Air I don't want to be locked into one system especially as at the time of typing this an Altair 26C camera is £1400 whereas the 2600MC pro is now £2000 & both do exactly the same so a no brainer for me, as budget to me is a thing & lets face it this is an expensive hobby so if savings can be made then I'm all for that. Clear skies & take it easy.

Cuiv, thanks once again. I learnt something today. I found the Hotspot turning off impossible to deal with and was blissfully unaware of the 2 software bits you just mentioned. I hope this will resolve the issue I have when connecting via a dedicated router that I have setup sans internet. Occassionally RDP will drop the connection and it will be impossible to reconnect as it says there is already a connection and I have to restart the mini PC. Thanks.
