👩🏽‍💻 I'm Dr Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at University of Oxford (Christ Church). I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

And yet, people got over Ceres not being a planet so completely that most don't even remember it once was one. Exact same problem as with Pluto. Wiki says _Ceres was the first asteroid to be discovered (by Giuseppe Piazzi at Palermo Astronomical Observatory on 1 January 1801).[18] It was originally considered a planet, but was reclassified as an asteroid in the 1850s after many other objects in similar orbits were discovered._

The first meme reminded me of something that happened in my childhood, sort of an inversion of the meme. I live in the northern US, but where we are is not far enough north to normally see the Aurora Borealis. But for some reason or another, the auroras were predicted to be visible not far from where we lived, and the weather was going to be clear. So my family drove out into the hinterlands to make sure there wouldn't be any light pollution and set up camp with telescopes and cameras and everything. Night falls, and the sky is crystal clear. But then the full moon rises and completely washes out most of the stars, and any auroras we might have been able to see. Total bummer, but I guess it was a fun trip anyway. Also one of the few times in my life I remember the night being as bright as you see in movies, just from the moon.

It is in the method section of a paper that you really can discover if they have some flaws in their approach. Reading method sections of papers made me follow a more practical career instead of a research career. There were so many flaws in the method section that I, an undergraduate student discovered, that I really thought that this was not something that I wanted to pursue. I felt that I could pick the method section apart from many of the articles I read. This was in evolutionary biology, so not exactly astrophysics, but science non the less.

An observations quote (about the 18th century Venus transit observations that almost everyone fucked up): "With eight years to prepare, [Guillaume Le Gentil] erected a first-rate viewing station, tested and retested his instruments, and had everything in a state of perfect readiness. On the morning of the transit, June 4, 1769, he awoke to a fine day, but, just as Venus began its pass, a cloud slid in front of the Sun and remained there for almost exactly the duration of the transit: three hours, fourteen minutes, and seven seconds." - Bill Bryson, A Short History of Nearly Everything

The Pluto thing, I think it was because the generation that currently dominates the internet were taught that there were 9 planets. I had a great time memorizing them, their orders, their appearances. Then suddenly, BAM, Dwarf Planet. I remember being in denial when I heard the news, that there were only 8 planets left. Some current astrophysicist might've become one because they want to prove Pluto was a still a planet. You said it yourself, its a gateway science.
