The 42” ASUS OLED gaming monitor (PG42UQ) review. It’s almost the perfect productivity and gaming monitor, with a DisplayPort, HDMI 2.1, 4K, VRR and 120hz. But can it compete with the LG C2 OLED?
I’ve been using it for the last month for productivity and gaming on the PS5, so today I will give you my updated thoughts on this OLED monitor. Although it ticks a lot of boxes, there are some compromises worth talking about. I also compare it to the LG C2 (as it’s the closest competitor).

This might be very late but I have the same monitor and regarding the ABL issue: You need to go into System Setup > Screen Protection > Screen Saver and turn it off. Thats what causes the dimming on static images and the "popping back". Also keep uniform brightness on and keep the brightness between 50 & 60. I have absolutely NO ABL issues! :) (Firmware V032)

@Deffine

I wouldnt sleep on the C2. I am gonna get a smaller OLED when it arrives (QD-OLED Alienware is bad and has veiled AG coating). The C2 is fantastic for HDR movies and games, runs with low input lag and has only small problems with banding sometimes (which can be removed with artificial dithering), and little blueish color shift on the sides on white backgrounds (not something that bothers me and you dont notice it at all on most content). A pure RGB stripe would be nice, but WRGB is much better than the triangular RGB dots on QD-OLED that makes the whole picture fuzzy.

I thought the 42” OLED would be to large, but I’m loving the C2. Totally agree it’s obnoxious to have to turn on the monitor with a remote every time I setup in the morning, but size wise I’ve been pleasantly surprised it wasn’t a negative (except 1st person shooters - totally agree there too). @tftcentral

In case it helps, Re the section talking about ABL, if the issue you’re experiencing is with the screen dimming after a short period of static content as the video suggests, and then brightening again when you move things around then that’s the “screen saver” function available in the OSD menu. That controls the ASBL (Auto Static Brightness Limiter) which is different to ABL, but thankfully something Asus allow you to turn off from the normal menu, unlike the LG C2 which can only be turned off via the factory menu. Worth having a look if that’s something annoying you If on the other hand it’s the dimming caused by resizing of windows (nothing to do with it detecting static content) and changing the APL, which is the real ABL, then that too can be avoided but for that you’d need the newest V031 firmware, and to enable the uniform brightness mode. This doesn’t work properly on previous firmware ver though
@vripiatbuzoi9188
@vripiatbuzoi9188 Год назад
So have all these brightness issues been solved. I want to use this for graphic design as well as gaming and don't want any brightness changes or any other dynamic characteristics changing on me under any condition. Only reason I am hesitating getting this monitor.
@maxzeblade
@maxzeblade Год назад
@@vripiatbuzoi9188 no even the firmware after v031 (034 I think) also has problems. I read it on some sites. I think rings talked about it also. Its Asus. My 48gq900 cots $996 (gift) but Asus 42" $1499. So you have Asus $1499 and if you didn't know BenQ has one $1799 and then LG on sell still $996.

If I were to be using this for gaming/tv only I’d choose the C2 (esp if I gamed only at night in a dark room/or a room that wasn’t close to a window) I will be choosing the Asus for the antiglare screen as I will be using it as a second work monitor for livingroom (photography editing/retoucher work) and some PC gaming in a room with lots of different ambient light sources. "OLED MONITOR" Thank you for that amazing review as I was debating between these two monitors. I have decided to go for the LG C2 because I can use the Xbox series x and ps5,switch and desktop 3080 on it. The love oleds with the glossy screen and the overall aesthetic of the lg and its gaming features. Having no display port isn't an issue as I hooked straight from the rtx 3080 via hdmi 2.1 albeit 120hz is more than enough for me and at 4k. My room game setup doesn't have windows so I can maximize the benefits of the gloss panel which is the way oleds look best. Since neither atleast in your review have good abl it was a no Brainer to go with the LG. My c8 from 2017 still has no burn in and I always get an extended warranty which the lg has at best buy. I have a 1440 p monitor and very high end legion 7i 2022 laptop that I use for any fps and productivity/work related stuff. Thanks again. I hope to tune in to your next podcast as well. I dont understand how people would like that much glossy screen on the C2 when using as a monitor. I mean after looking at this video, the background of the room gets reflected so much, that its also part of the monitor content, especially if you like using the monitor in a well lit room. I would feel immensely distracted by that. I was about to pick up a C2 yesterday, but after watching this video, I am wondering if I should wait for this monitor. ***Absolutely good review, it would be nice if you could show both the monitors side by side to see how much more black/contrast they achived due to glossy display vs anti-glare display ***

I have been using a 42" monitor for years now. I have lots of tips but the most important one... Place yourself slightly to the left of center if your are right handed or vice versa. Most work involves a main focus area and secondary info area off the side. Placing yourself off center allows you to get the most out of your screen real estate

You could also do three workspaces or screens on this monitor. They'd work out to around 12 inches each (36.7 inches across for this monitor)and you can adjust it making each workspace thinner or wider depending on your uses. This way you don't have to center yourself to the side. There are programs that allow for this type of tri layout, I know one in linux for instance.

I've been using a 48in LG C1 for a little more than a year. I like the idea of a 42 inch 4K screen having better text clarity, the instant standby resume, and auto on/off features like a regular monitor. But there are too many compromises imo. The biggest one is the matte finish, I'll never go back after having the glossy C1. Also, with the cost of a $7 service remote I turned off the ABL completely on my C1, I doubt that's possible on the ASUS. After a year of use in gaming, web, and documents, I have not a hint of burn in or image retention. I found the LGTV app for windows that turns on the C1 when windows starts, and turns it off when windows shuts down. The only thing I would like to change about my C1 would be to bump the refresh rate up from 120 to 144hz, and drop the size to 42 inches.

Put this or the Asus/BenQ/LG next to the glossy screen in a darker room...yeah its not like night and day. All 4 would look beautiful..hello OLED. As for ABL on these well at least mine LG its nothing at all like it is on C1 C2. I only saw it once. I was away from the computre for a while came back and the screen was dull looking. Move the mouse it was gone. Never seen it come on...ever. I would never use this or any TV to work on. There are others out there much brighter for every day work in the day time. I like that the >40" monitor category is becoming more solid and continues to see improvements and innovation. The only thing I like about this monitor is how it gives the LG C2 42" amazing OLED panel PC monitor features. For instance without DisplayPort Macs can't use it for 4K 120hz. That being said, I think this still feels like a first iteration of OLED displays fro this category. There are still things here to improve for me to consider this an alternative worth spending money for. My current display is far worse than this, but it's still provides me great value. But I'm really looking forward to replace it with something in this category in the coming year or two.

@AvihuTurzion
@AvihuTurzion Год назад
@@halwye they definitely can. On the most basic level driving the 16” displays in the M1 MacBook Pros at 120Hz is almost like 4K at 120Hz, and in sheer pixel count driving the 6K Pro Display XDR at 60Hz pushes more pixels a second than 4K120Hz. And the M1 Max MacBook Pros can drive two of these external display alongside the internal one. It’s just a matter of interface. For some reason macOS doesn’t support 4K120Hz on HDMI regardless if the underlying hardware allows it. So if you connect an HDMI 2.1 to thunderbolt 4 adapter, macOS will drive it at 4K but cap it at 60Hz unlike a DisplayPort interface which will allow 120Hz. Until this is resolved, using macs will not drive such TVs as these to their full 120Hz potential.

OLED MONITOR - I just got the Asus PG42UQ about a month ago for $899.99 courtesy of MicroCenter here in the US. So far I love it. I was upgrading a 32" 1440p 165hz gaming monitor. I debated going with it or an LG C3 for $899.99. I wanted a panel that was more like a monitor and needed an anti-glare coating for the lighting in my office/man-cave. So far its been great but I will admit this is my first OLED panel of any kind. I think for a smaller screen and monitor OLED is great... but for TV's or anything you're sitting at distance from, OLED just isn't there yet. Especially in brightness compared to some good LED's (like my Vizio P series Quantum X) when they are priced half as much. I think of this as an ultimate IPS monitor as glossy coatings cause eye strain after a while and doing work or reading on that is silly. We keep moving the bar of what we want, but in reality, you need multiple monitors for all activities- one of which will probably handle 80% of your needs, and the other the rest. I would still grab an LG C series on top for movies, but not the 42" as it has no brightness compared to the 55" version (due to heatsink and BL). Great review just need to mention the use cases when you recommend one over the other as Matte coating is better for work, and anyone that has a monitor now without a glossy coating which is essentially everyone. TV's are still required for HDR, and alot of the Apps don't stream in 4K or even full-hd on Windows apps/browser Vs Playstation/Xbox/Apple TV/ NVIDIA SHIELD/Steaming devices.

if you think the screen is too big, just don't use all of it. think of the screen as a canvas that you can place your screen on. put that game in 1440p, have the gpu do integer scaling and tada! You have a -32"- 27 inch screen on the middle of your 42" canvas. (1440p is 32" on a 48" display, sorry. i guess you could do something like 1600p to get 32 inches). i recommend using a fully BLACK wallpaper on windows not only to preserve the screen, but also because then you can just use your games in windowed mode and move them around to whatever part of screen you want, then have some extra apps around them (or not), kinda like a multi monitor set but all-in-one. you can also do this to get any aspect ratio you like. i came from an ultrawide screen, so at first i used this trick at 3860x1440 to get an ultrawide image. then i adapted back to 16:9 and i just use full screen and sit farther back (not playing anything with keyboard and mouse anyway)
