Check out the newer Flow Z13 review next! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_CMqQiKU-9Q.html 17:57 I meant to say the screen itself looks nice, not the response time!
Great review! Truly impressive level of performance in a thin and light 2-in-1. As a research scientist who needs raw power and is always on the go, I was desperately waiting for something like this. G14 looked almost perfect... If it just had a webcam! Thankfully, Asus did it right with this one! I've just ordered the Flow X13 without the eGPU; I can't wait to put that Ryzen beast to work in fighting diseases :)
I wish Asus would sell an eGPU enclosure with that proprietary cable. That way we can choose what GPU to put in it, and upgrade it later. Would actually make having that proprietary connection more viable.
@@IBadlyNamed well, yeah, I don't think anyone looking for portability is going to ask to be able to take their whole GPU everywhere. Asus could have them both be sold and not make it mutually exclusive
Off the back of your review, I placed my order for the 32GB, 1080p version with eGPU, today. Thank you so much. Your review methodology is the most useful for me compared with other types of review on RU-vid.
Thank you so much for covering important details nobody else seems to bother. I was about to pull my hair out trying to figure out whether the left USB-C port also supported power-in. Literally couldn't find this info anywhere else.
A very interesting laptop that initiated lots of great content! For me, faster screen+disabling optimus+micro sd+better battery life(like with 80% brightness, as many apps as I need open, 120hz, 8 hours)+windows hello facial recognition+3050ti makes it the perfect laptop. This might seem like a lot but it has been the closest to my perfect laptop ever. Great video with loads of content! Love it!
@@sunnyjiang6245 it does except I bought the 5900hs+3050ti already. I've added miniLED or OLED to my list of requirements too. The 2023 version might not provide 8hrs of battery life as 7840hs optimization isn't there and could almost be seen as a downgrade from 6800hs. One more year we wait.
@@JarrodsTech exactly, finaly can use it reliably for video editing with extreme versatility with all modes and 120hz touchscreen display ,no to mention power brick is also half of size smaller from razers one.
@@SonicDestiny just wish this got cheaper mobile GPU’s like the 3070 and 3060 as a cheaper option, this on its on for $1500 is just too much only being able to buy the $1500 3080 dock if and when its restocked
Great, information rich video template you have there Jarrod. A friendly suggestion would be to reverse the graphs that have "lower is better" to be consistent and having top performers on actual top :)
I got the asus flow x13 with ryzen 6800Hs/ 16gb DDR5 and 512gb m2. Its a very nice laptop, a little overkill for my office work but i got this beast for 693$ only because it was displayed for 1 month in the shop + 2 years warranty.
I can't wait for you to review the new 6900hs version of this laptop! Any idea when that review might come around? I'm nearly ready to buy it but I really want to see what you have to say about it first.
It uses LPDDR4X 4266MHz which is rare for Ryzen. Would be fun to compare Vega iGPU versus Intel Xe - both with 4266 LPDDR4x and normal DDR4 in other laptops.
This laptop, without the eGPU, is probably the best performance 13 inch laptop you can have. At $1200 for the base model, it’s quite reasonable too, similar to XPS, but has a 1650! Getting this, plus a desktop (not the eGPU), is quite a reasonable option as well.
Best Buy or the online Asus store. And it was $999 on Black Friday, which is insane because it beats the XPS 9315 in EVERY WAY while being the same price.
I'm not actually in the market for a gaming laptop as a replacement for my aging XPS 13, but this really tempting for about the same price as a current-gen XPS 13 which would still only have a U-series Intel quad core. Great thorough review too!
Hi Jarrod, I am pretty sold on this laptop and your review cemented my views on it, so thank-you! I am a noob when it comes to this stuff though, which is why I watch your videos, and I am facing a conundrum. The model you have reviewed is for sale at Harvey Norman and when I was trying to shop around, I found that there is a model with a Ryzen 9 5900HS (as opposed to the R7 5800) and RTX 3050Ti (as opposed to the GTX 1650) for like $100 more. Is it worth my while buying the model with the bigger numbers or would that actually be worse for some reason that I may not know? Hoping I can find out in the next couple of days as I need to buy a new laptop soon! Thanks again.
Definitely worth it. The ryzen 9 is the same as ryzen 7, but from betterchips, so it can run on lower voltage, so it needs less power for the same performance. The RTX 3050ti is capable of dlss (so you will have much more fps), and also it's a bit stronger. I will buy the X13 with the Ryzen 7 and the 3050 config soon, but in my country this is the only option with 32gb of ram :/
0:36 I have of these and I can say for sure that the top and bottom lid is made of all magnesium alloy, the screen is glass, but the keyboard deck area and the hinge is all plastic.
I got this a few weeks ago, the most powerful laptop I have ever used I would recommend it 100%. It handles both Apex and Warzone on mid setting at 80 to 100 fps and probably more if running in turbo
@@arturandreev1412 it still runs really well, I’ve plugged it in to an external monitor now and a keyboard so i have maximum airflow and it is extremely capable and still has good battery life
I got the 4k version, and you should know "the screen has VRR". So, you don 't need 1080p 120 hz version anymore. There is no performance issues on windows 10 interface both igpu, gpu and xg.
How to spot a console gamer, he tells you you don't need 120hz Boy if you have 120hz you don't need vrr More frames is better vrr makes below 60fps gaming a bit better but it's always better trying to get above 60hz. Personally I tune games to run at 80-100hz, above I don't see a difference, below I can see stuttering. And I'm no pro gamer, 100hz simply looks and feels smoother
Thanks for the review, Jarrod, it's great. Would you buy the laptop itself without the eGPU if you are in search of a reasonably powerful light machine or are there better alternatives? Cheers
I bought the Flow X13 without egpu (as that was all that was available in Europe at the moment). I'm really curious when and for how much the XG Mobile with 3070 will be sold. Tbh, I'm not a big competitive gamer but like some occasional gaming and so far even the 1650 in the laptop was able to run Civ VI and Cyberpunk 2077 well enough for me to play them both. (only had it for a week so that's all I've played so far)
8:42 i sure hope there is a way around this... imagine leaving for a trip and forgetting to un marry the gpu the night before... you arrive only to find your laptop is bricked... brutality.
Amazing reviews Jarrod, keep up the excellent work! I am contemplating purchasing a laptop + eGPU but I mainly play FFXIV. What would you suggest? Would it be more of a CPU-bound game as it's an mmo? Side towards Intel? It'll be mainly for working ~70% and ~30% gaming
I saw the 2022 model of this laptop, with an AMD Ryzen 6900HS CPU, an Nvidia RTX 3050 GPU, 16 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of storage for $999 on Black Friday 2022. Given that the newer model also has a MUX switch, I don't think it can be beat in terms of 13 inch laptops at that price.
@@JarrodsTech Indeed. This is closest to a dream laptop that offers gaming and the portability for international travel for me. Lovin the review as always.
0:39 The outside of the screen and the bottom of the chassis are said to be magnesium alloy - i think magnesium and aluminum. The inside where the keyboard is is plastic.
Great Video! A performance comparison to the Surface Book 3 13,5 with GTX 1650 Max-Q could be interesting as they have a similar form factor and pricing. If you ever find the time it would be much appreciated. Otherwise, keep up the amazing work!
Man..... The Razer Blade Stealth 13 has been my dream laptop for the last few years now (even though I don't need it because I already own two laptops and an high performance desktop setup)... But seeing this review has made me question that lol ASUS has continuously been blowing me away with the quality of their laptops recently. The only three things I could think of in the Stealth's favor are: (a) subjectively it's aesthetically more appealing (b) the build quality appears higher and sturdier (c) it runs a 1650ti MAX-Q (though it shockingly underperformed in this test; curious if that's CPU or power related). With those few sacrifices, in the X13 you get: (a) longer battery life (b) taller display (16:10) with touch screen capability (c) fingerprint scanner (d) superior Ryzen 8-core CPU (e!!!) AN HDMI PORT (f) superior (albeit fewer) USB ports (g) potentially superior speakers. Good thing I can't find this thing in stock anywhere, otherwise I might impulse buy it lol
Thank you Jarod, very good video indeed. I have pre-ordered mine from the UK with e-gpu (supernova edition) but it's completely out of stock... The retailer has noted that there are some issues with connectivity between the laptop and e-gpu to explain the delay. Have experienced any problems? Thanks again for your work
thanks you fixed my theory that all the ports were hooked up to the IGPU lol I have the 3050ti version and love it so far, and got an insane deal with it. Now I just have to find a 3080 or 3070 egpu lol poor me ;) thanks for the great video.
I was going to buy this until I read a reddit thread with some details no reviewer has addressed: Plugging and unplugging the eGPU is a major pain. Every time you want to switch, you not only have to go through the ASUS software, but also close all other software that is running. For example: If you're playing a game and suddenly have to leave, you have to save and close the game, and any other documents or software running in the background too. If you don't do this, you can't use the laptop in iGPU. Seems far off from the plug-and-play experience we would all want.
I travel a lot for work and am weighing the pros/cons of this setup over just a standard 15.6/17.3" laptop with a RTX3080. Hauling around my Alienware 17R4 & 330W brick is starting to become cumbersome.
I am interested in getting this as a music production/live band playing. I usually use ableton/fl stuido with plug ins such as omnisphere/keyscape/kontakt. Is this a good one for that?
And still almost everyone fails to mention that the RAM is soldered and caps out at 16GB with a FHD screen options and only 2 of the 4K screen SKUs come with 32GB - they also do come with the R9 5980HS CPU as the Supernova edition... or so Asus page shows on the product page. That's a pity, 'cause 32GB at this price point would have sounded better if present across the lineup. And that 4K screen while looking nice is kind of overkill, especially since the weaker internal dGPU is just GTX1650 in a 35W package - there are I think 2 FHD 16:10 screen SKUs as option but they come with 512GB SSD + 16GB RAM + R7 5800HS, and the screen is of low color rating (something like 100% sRGB 70% ARGB/DCI-P3). So to run the higher quality 4K integrated screen that nets you a 85% ARGB you need the external dGPU to get good performance. Plus, 4K in a 13" only eats up your battery and makes the iGPU/idGPU run harder/hotter, without providing any great benefit over smaller resolutions.
It's the brightness for me. I'd like to see phone(1000+ nit), or at least tablet(600 nit) level of brightness, which most ultrabooks at this price range do have the option. A good OLED would solve both response times and brightness deficiencies. I would pay the premium for a good QHD, OLED screen, 4K is nice but would last 2 hours on this. battery.
@@mini9503 I mean I use an Helios 300 currently which has around the same brightness, a little low maybe, but it's response time and refresh rate make even editing word files feels better. Ppl really don't acknowledge how far a better display goes for productivity. Edit: 2019 model, with thin bezels not the chunky boi from 2018
I still think that if you buy this laptop solely for gaming, then you should just use an external monitor. It's plain harder to game on a 13 inch screen. I have one of these with the 3080 xg gpu and I use an external monitor, and it's honestly a much better experience, 90% because the screen is bigger.
Hi there. I wish I could send this in a private message, and I mean this in the kindest way possible. I love your content of the three videos that I've just watched and discovered. The only thing stopping me from subscribing is your repetitive vocal pitch pattern. It jars me to hear the same robotic pattern speaking out every scripted line. Other than that, your videos have given me so much information that's more in depth than the most popular reviewers out there, keep up the great work!
Curious if theres any thermal benefits of this being a 2-in-1. If you have the keyboard face down with the fans exposed would give you any cooler temps or if their raising keyboard design makes them essentially equal.
