ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2080 Super Thermal Pads replacment
This card is from Jul 2019. and it's never been replaced the termal pads.
So in the end of 2022, the time is come to replace this pads.
I have been used 4W/mK thermal pads,
1.0 mm for memory and
1.5 mm for VRM.
The results are great, check the end of the video for comparisong with old pads and new ones.
For GPU i used ARCTIC MX-4 thermal paste, i recoment this paste it's great!

I've gone from 75 degrees Celsius to 62, and from 105 degrees hot spot to 75 in a asus rog strix 2080 ti I have used Noctua NT-H2 as thermal paste and as thermal pads Gelid GP-Ultimate 1mm for the vmem-vcore thin strip and memories 3 strips and 1.5mm for the long strip.

Love the video, helps alot thank you! 👍🏼 One thing I could suggest though is to spread the thermal paste on the chip evenly across the whole chip to get better results because one little open spot can trigger the fans to go fast and lose some performance eventhough the rest op the chip is perfectly pasted

Hi Aleksandar -- I appreciate the video. However, you clap your hands and the old pads dissapear and the new ones are there. But for someone who has never done this before, can you please explain how to remove the old pads and put the new ones on? Should i use alcohol? do you just pull them off? This is my first time doing this and I am unsure. I would like to know before I open the card and maybe break my gpu. Thank you so much.

@@somberpollo6530 Hello from Bosna and Herzegovina. 😄 Yes, it will work, but you will need more thermal pads for memory, bcs Ti version have more memory chip on pcb if i'm not wrong. Just take good thermal paste and take a good clening so you can avoid big hot spot temps.

@@alexzaric Hello friend, I saw this post from a forum that in conclusion the correct thing is to use 1.5 mm thermal pads for the entire PBC: "1.5mm is used for the entire Strix PCB; GDDR6, chokes, every component on the Strix PCB = 1.5mm according to the response I received from an ASUS Support Rep who allegedly 'spoke with the engineers' before returning with an answer, which I later verified after physical disassembly for a much-needed replacement pad. I went with an affordable Arctic pad (7w/mK) for a short time before my curiosity compelled me to try the pricey Fujilpoly Extreme (11w/mK) and recycle my Arctic pads by migrating them to the rear of the same components on the backside of the PCB toward the backplate. I hope it may help to passively dissipate a tiny bit of extra heat from the components, but considering the Strix 2080/Ti backplate rests on standoffs and doesn't make proper contact with the PCB to begin with (nor does it have thermal pads installed in stock configuration) I sorta doubt it. There really aren't any significant gains to be had from replacing thermal pads alone unless you are need the extra bit of conductivity for whatever purposes in which case you may be able to get away with 1mm pads a thinner is better for conductivity and by that point you should just spring for a block and build a loop."

@@somberpollo6530 I was write to Asus too, they replay 1.5 on all pcb, but when i check the old pads (original) and i get 1mm on memory and 1.5 on vrm, mybe on Ti version is different, but im sure it's 1mm on memory.

Termal pads thickness are the same, if i'm not wrong, only different is the size od the memory pads, u have more memory on that card, and i think that u have pads on back plate, but i'm not sure. Best way is to measure thickess first. Sorry for not have right answer.

@@alexzaric thank for you fast answer, really appreciate it!!! Is it not dangerous at this temp longterm wise? I'am using custom fan curve with afterburner. Just want to save the lifetime of the fans as I don't want them to run on idle time but is it safe? I used to have a 1080 ti oc before and the gpu's fans was kicking only while gaming and idle wasn't going that high but I assume that the 2080 ti is bigger so heating more...
@alexzaric

well, if u can, please try to adjust the afterburner that on 58C start the fans, if im not wrong, up to 60C is safe without fan, but its not recommented. 50-57 C is gold area. I have before this one gtx 1080 too, not Ti, and that gpu is not turn on fans up to 65C. I didnt do anything in afterburner, its set up like that from the box. So with that in mind, see what u can do. Thanks.

@alexzaric I suspected it, but I tried anyway to see the temps, they are really really low (40 C) compared to earlier under max load (the gpu literally crahed a few times because it overheat), the new 1mm pads, even if not 1.5mm, seem to work just fine. But I'll order the 1.5 pads and replace them anyway, and see the temps difference. But do you think I can just keep the 1mm if they seem to be working fine?
