You are really up-to-date! How did you manage to land your hands on this new model when it's not even updated in the Asus websites and not in the retail stores?
How should a home / office be pre-wired in order to use such wifi-routers? Normally the wiring closet where the network drops originate are not centrally located. If you place this thing on the ceiling in the middle of your home/office, then the LAN cables are also supposed to converge at the ceiling?
Thanks, excellent review. I've always had home-coverage issues (in Hong Kong, concrete walls with rooftop). Amazing that the left side of your house at 20ft with a few walls in between saw speed plummet from 800 to about 200. However at the right side of your house and even on the second floor the drop wasn't that dramatic. So here's my question; for those areas in the house that really are difficult to reach buying a AIMESH additional router will resolve the problem? That will set me back another USD 250 (at least). Yeah AiMesh or Other Mesh Units would be good solution if you are have bigger Sqft to cover. But my results will be different from yours, because construction of your house, your router location, etc. AX89X should be able to cover 3000 Sqft without any problem.
The SFP+ port will only operate at 10Gig so your copper length will be limited as it will not switch to 2.5Gig or 1Gig if the cable quality is poor. Better to use a fiber module.
Just some thoughts.. do as you please with feedback =). Think the benchmarks using internet is not accurate/good as your at mercy of many hops you do not control (ISP, backbone, Server). Would also like to know the results of your read/write locally on laptop/server to determine if bottleneck is the drive on either end although you are pretty close to the 2.5Gb/s reported by your network. I've just ordered up on this router based on what looks like faster CPU then the AX11000 (different chipset but some site benchmark comparison on USB which is CPU dependent scored it a bunch faster). I do plan on using this for network storage and extra speed will help. Other selling point for me again back to faster CPU is I suspect it has better VPN performance. And the 10Gig Lan/SFP ports will be great for the home lab. Lastly some online benchmarks also show this router is dramatically less affected by distance on its performance compared to AX11000 at 30 feet and I figure 90 percent of my wireless will be in the 30-50 foot range through floors/walls so found that very helpful here. In order to test the wifi radio on this router you need to setup your iperf test in a specific way. iperf server must be run from a wired host, otherwise you are testing wifi to wifi round trip with iperf. Also the wired iperf server host should be connected to the 10Gb port ( at 10GB/s) on the router. Otherwise this is not a usable measurement for the purposes of this testing. Your file copy transfer over 10GB/s likely uses a SMB server and client and that will also limit your results as well.
Excellent detail review as always. I agree from the specs and performance, it looks like a best router in the market. Dual 10gb option is a A+++++++ finally i can have 10gb network at home.
The issue with Asus routers is there inability to be reliable, when you add a mesh node or have them for more than 6 mouths you see howb terrible they are for wifi reliability when you have 20 connected.
I think whoever designed this, just watched an Aliens marathon and thought it was a good idea to keep a facehugging crab-alien in his living room (hard pass on me, i don't want a facehugger in my living room... I bought the RT-AX82U instead).

It all depends on the SQFT of the house. There are many great Routers and Mesh units i have reviewed on the channel. But so far TPlink AXE200 is the Best Mesh IMO, and Asus AXE16000 for Single Router.
What is the maximum throughput of the switch side? IE, If I push a 300 TB backup from my PC to my NAS over the two 10gb ports will traffic on the 1gb ports slow down?
Good Question - I don't have the comparison but from my RT-AX89X review my money would be on the RT-AX89X. It all depends on your House Sqft, i would recommend start with Single RT-AX89X and if you still have dead zones, then i would look for AiMesh option.

Alien is a Tri-Band Router, and this is Dual Band. But if you Ok with Dual Band - Asus has Dual 10Gig options, and can support 160HZ channel support where Alien still haven't release the 160 channel support (suppose to in the new firmware). So yes it has better features as Dual band router + Dual 10Gbe + 160 channel support.
@@DealUnboxing thanks for your reply. I do like the sound of the Tri band over duel band but idk if ill ever really need the third band. I do have alot of diveces over wifi. Now I'm curious if and when Amplifi releases that 160hz band will it perform better for multi devices over duel band.
AX12 AX11000 is a Tri-Band and this is a Dual Band. We have reviewed Asus AX11000 on the channel you should check out the review. There are few changes, e.g. RT-AX89X uses 2.2Ghz Quad Core as compare to AX11000 series routers uses 1.8Ghz Quad Core, plus RT-AX89X has Dual 10Gbe Ports, as compare to AX11000 does not. Since RT-AX89X is AX6000 router you have to compare it against AX6000 series routers from other manufacturers. But i think RT-AX89X is fastest - WiFi 6 router in the market. There will be AX11000 series of this router coming up in near future with WiFi 6e support.
I'm getting a router very shortly, what would you recommend to me as money is no issue. Needing for 5 gamers in one house (one story house) also we're hardcore gamers and 4K streamer on NBN sometimes all of us are watching shows in our own rooms 4K streaming at the same time. We'll be running long 20m cat 6 lan cables also through the wall from the router to our PC's in some rooms but require good wi fi also. Also what ISP would you recommend in Australia to go hand in hand with the router as I hear this is required? I'll be on the NBN network also and will not be using adsl 2 or anything less. On wifi we'll have at least 10 devices. Hope to hear from you soon :) Subscribed also :D
You don't need modem if you have FIOS Fiber / Ethernet connection from the ONT box. Just plugin Ethernet cable directly to the WAN port and you should be up and running. But if you have Coax then you need modem.
@@zredplayer Yes this router can work as built in Modem. Just plugin your Ethernet Cable from ONT box to your WAN connection on the Router and see if it works.

@@waterbug1999 during the setup it will walk you through the steps - Since you have FIOS you should not have to use username or password. I am not familiar with century link process, but you should select DHCP option, unless you have Static IP.
Asus told me that you can't go from the ONT straight in to this router. You have to have a modem. Asus support sucks. EDIT.. so after digging around the internet I found how to set it up from the fiber ONT to bypass the century link modem / router. After you enter in your pppoe user name and password. You have to go into LAN - IPTV - change ISP PROTOCOL TO "manual setting" - put in 201 in the VID / internet. Apply it and it works.
Internet speeds for this router are good for WiFi 6 but still not faster than the Orbi system. iPhone 11 Pro within 5 feet of router I get consistent 750 -780 downloads and no slower that 500 anywhere in my house. 3000 square foot house. Definitely more features on this router but raw WiFi speed there still isn’t a faster router than the Orbi
Orbi WiFi 6 5Ghz is (2x2) 2400Mbps as compare to Asus is (8x8) 5Ghz 4800 Mbps, and also iPhone 11 WiFi 6 (test phone) is slower than iPhone 11 Pro's WiFi 6. But CPU and RAM on Both routers are same. Appreciate the Feedback.
I hit 805 mbps once via wifi with the AX89x. With the Orbi 6000 AX router i maxed out at around 690 mbps. I consistently hit 720 mbps with the AX89x router.
I saw this thing at 1300 on Amazon. I had to check to see what the fuck this thing was lol. For the record, I'm saving up for a Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 AX11000 Tri-Band 10 Gigabit WiFi Router in 2021. Which is around 400-450 bucks. Might be cheaper in 2021.

I've had the ax11000 and ax92u in mesh node, terrible, sent it back after 4 months. Been a massive Asus fan for years, I just can't take the unreliable Wi-Fi. Moved Ubiquiti
Ac87u is amazing, change mine for wifi 6 router ax82u, but the Ac87u has better range. So my upgrade was not really an upgrade i think, but it looks so good.
