Walkthrough video showing the process of opening an ASUS 3080 TUF to replace the thermal pads with custom-size, high conductivity, thermal pads.
Procedure is the same for the 3080Ti and 3090 TUF.
Note: pads had actually been replaced before the video.
You can get the custom GPU thermal pad sets from there:
kriticalpads.com
Material used (when changing the pads, before recording):
- Cleaning: Paper towel + 99% isopropyl alcohol
- Thermal pads: pre-cut, custom set, 20 W/m-K.
- Thermal paste: previously replaced with SYY 15.7 W/m-K paste
Results:
- Included in the video at the very end
- Memory temperature drop of ~16°C under load
- GPU core temperature reduced by 1°C (i.e. no change, which us good!)

Received your thermal pads and applied them yesterday and they are amazing temps down by 7-8 degrees on the hotspot!! Thanks a lot

Why is so hard for people to post a video with the detail thickness, or or at point a link to image or something

Just one quick and easy question; the thick thermal pads on the back plate for the vram modules; are those 2.5mm or 3.0mm, I just need to confirm or deny the correct size so I can order them. If not certain; I can always just order both and measure them once I open the card. Very straightforward and actionable information; so thanks for that. Peace

I've just bought one for my new pc build, do you need to change the pads straight out of the box, or I can straight away just start using the gpu, it will be in Lian Li XL case with about 13 fans

Do you have any updates for better size/placement for thermal pads for the Asus tuf rtx 3080ti OC?
@NonLegitNation2
@NonLegitNation2 Год назад
so I replaced the pads on my tuf 3080 and now i get so signal and the vga debug led stays lit up on my mobo. I'm using gelid extreme pads and used all the suggested sizes and thicknesses. Also the pads that were on my card were pretty thin compared to the pads I replaced them with. The stock pads all look to be 1mm and 0.5mm. I don't get it, it's the same exact card you have in this video. I tightened everything down good and the GPU die is making great contact with the heat sink so I don't know whats wrong. I tried loosening the tension bracket and that didn't work then I tried tightening it and that didn't work. Did I just kill my GPU that I just bought last week for nearly $600?

This exact Kit lowered my 3080 TUF v1 Memory Temps from 108* C to 86* C (side panel off) when mining at 100MH/s. That's a 22* C difference! Therefore, I was previously forced to run my 3080 at about 88MH/s (side panel off) to keep it at 96* C ...but now I can reach full 100 MH/s with healthy temps! One small complaint is that I wish it included backplate pads, but the video claims it wouldn't help much.

@KriticalPads
@KriticalPads 2 года назад
3090s are bound to run hotter than 3080s since the backplate does not really act as a good heatsink. Adding heatsinks on the backplate would help further reduce that temperature. You can also have fans blowing at the backplate. 90°C is not a bad temperature for a 3090, but that depends on the operating conditions (is it running at 100% fan in a cool room, or at 50% fan in a hot room...). Basically pads serve to move heat from the PCB/VRAM to the heatsink and backplate. But removing heat from these is a different matter (short read on that topic: kriticalpads.com/Understanding-the-basics-of-heat-transfer-thermal-pads-vs-heat-removal-heatsink_b_2.html)

Used there set, hardly any difference in temps, but some reason getting abit more hashrate (rvn) , also after 2+ years mining (v1) old pads on the ddr6x where dry up, better save then sorry. But was hoping for abit more temp difference for the price of the kite. Maby i got lucky from the factory it self.

@KriticalPads

The KP set uses 1.65mm for the front VRAM and 2.2mm for the back VRAM (RTX 3090). It gives the desired compression without keeping the die away from the heatsink.

Do you offer a service where users can send the GPU in, and have you do the pad upgrade? Also, what temp drops can be expected with these new pads?
@jonahjameson272
@jonahjameson272 2 года назад
Unless youre watercooling I dont think pad changes are worth it honestly. I tried id say 8x times to pad chance the Asus Tuf 3090 with negligible results. I'm telling you I swapped and changed pads 6x times and the GPU spring screws were a couple more changes from being stripped. I didn't see anything worthwhile with the results. First thing is all thermal pads are different with their compression and thickness so one brand's 2.0mm may not be the same as another's. And I probably didn't do it right no matter how hard I tried so all in all not worth the headache. I now did the same thing with a byski waterblock and have temps that don't go above 80c while mining, and THIS too was a headache. Flex on the PCB, pads not making contact - looking through guides to see what sizes to put -- an all around frustrating task. Don't bother honestly the backplate itself cannot dissipate the heat fast enough so even if you are transferring more efficiently it doesn't really matter. The front memory I believe those are the game changers but without thermal pads directly on the back of the backplate (outside) With heatsink/fans the back memory temps are going to be the same pretty much

@DirkMensonides

1. if you re-padded a GDDR6 based card, that previously had temps staying at 65° C or below during stress, then that was a bad move. 2. If you re-padded a card with one of these kits, and the result is 110 on the memory, then you made a mistake in the process. After my first attempt with my 3080 TUF, my memory temps dropped by over 20° C with these pads but my core temp raised by 20° with Arctic Silver MX4 (which may have been old paste) ... so rather than whining that it was KriticalPad's fault, I assumed I made a mistake, reopened the Card, reapplied AS MX4 paste from a new tube, and then reassembled the card. Now everything is great. Normal Core Temps and waaaaay better mem temps thanks to this exact kit.

@@DirkMensonides Extremely well said. You just made a perfect example of almost everyone in this hobby now. "It doesn't work so the product sucks". Lol, no. It's a machined copper plate. If it didn't work well for you, you're just dumb. Period. The first step to improving is admitting you don't know as much as you think you do. A lot of these people could really use some self reflection & humility.
