My G531GU (Strix Hero III) came with a 1660ti instead, and a 4-zone RGB keyboard. My friend's G531GW (Scar III) matches the specs in this video, and he has per key RGB. Both screens seem identical as well as the overall build

You can check yourself by referring to the results in this video and my recent Scar II review if you want to hear it, but yeah the Scar II was a tiny bit quieter in balanced mode, then a tiny bit louder in turbo mode at max speed, but within 1 decibel of each other so not too big of a difference.

Thanks for the great review Jarrod! Some of my experience after using the G531GW Scar III for a week. 1. The keystone is a white elephant, and often not recognized if docked during reboots. (I suspect it has something to do with the Armoury Crate.) 2. The Armoury Crate is a poor control panel beta, buggy and incomplete functions to support newer ROG notebooks. 3. Also, it is unlikely not to hit the Numlock function on the touchpad by accident during normal usage.

Hey, nice video. My only question is whether the scar iii is substantially better than the scar ii with rtx 2070 in terms of cooling and build quality ? I honestly don't mind the 144 Hz of the Scar ii but is the display of the scar iii better in terms of colour reproduction and viewing angles ?

@@trs5730 Thanks but could you be more specific ? From a performance standpoint the two are technically identical. So my main concerns are cooling, keyboard and trackpad quality and display between the two.

Hi Jarrod! Nice review (as always)! You should know, that Asus is using very bad thermal paste. It is looking like concrete already when you buying laptop. For example, in Scar II MX-4 giving -6 or 8 degrees fo cpu and liquid metal giving -18 or - 20 degrees. I mentioned that because that bad thermal conductivity minimizing influence of undervolting and cooling pad. Sorry for bad English :)

Great review. Thanks for taking the time. I don't know if this has been stated in the comments, but the reason it says per key RGB AND 4 zone RGB is because the keyboard itself IS in fact per key. The lightbar is what they were talking about (4 zones) as it is split up into 4 zones. Also, you CAN indeed turn off any of the 4 zones of light bar, and ROG symbol on back, and any key on keyboard; all indenpendently of the others. Hope this helps, and keep up the great reviews. P.S. I just bought this 2 weeks ago, and even though your review made it seem as though it was an ok gaming rig, I find it to be a beast (of course this is compared with the one I am replacing it with, the G750JM, I7-4xxx, GTX870M, etc...). P.P.S I have undervolted mine to -0.120V, underclocked turbo of CPU to 4.0ghz, set short turbo max to 1 second, and overclocked video card to: +200mhz clock, and +1ghz memory (yes, its very stable too), and I see similar numbers in games, but have yet to see my temps go above 77 or so (never above 80).

@@JarrodsTech it could very well be they updated the software AND the bios. As a matter of fact, now I'm thinking of it, when I first booted it up, while doing windows updates, the asus update software had some updates for it, and one was a bios update.

I'm glad you posted this reply. Since you own this laptop, you mention the RGB light bar as having 4 zones? Does that mean you can select the keyboard as having a color and the lightbar as having different colors or does it have to match the keyboard. I remember reading an older article how the lightbar can't be customized and has to match the keyboard. Is this true? That's a deal breaker for me if true.

@@stefman4444 using the aura creator software you can set them all different colors. Meaning ALL keys and ALL 4 zones of the light bar can indeed have different color, flashing, changing, etc. There ARE some limits with the software, but you can do pretty much what you like with it.

This is a very thorough review! Thank you and bravo! I was wondering, did you try to repaste the CPU? I have just bought and waiting for the 17'' version. I'm going to use some Kryonat and pads to repaste everything. How difficult was to achieve the -0.13 undervolting? Could the 17'' model perform better due to somewhat better heat dispersion?

Cheers! Unfortunately I am not able to repaste review units, otherwise the next reviewer will not be aware of the change and report incorrect data due to what I've done without knowing. The undervolt was very easy, generally I go for -0.15v and that is almost always fine, just wasn't in my unit, specific values vary by CPU though so you just have to experiment. I have heard the 17" has an extra heatpipe, so may run cooler, you can compare the insides of yours vs the insides of mine in the video to confirm.

@@JarrodsTech Hi! The 17.3'' laptop doesn't have an extra heat pipe, I checked it but I haven't done much else. I got it yesterday and I am sending it to the service. It is a retail version without OS. I installed the win10 pro 3 times and countless drivers following chatty reps troubleshooting steps but still the touchpad works erratically or it doesn't work at all. I am disappointed.

Basically I think IPS is trademarked by LG, so when AUO makes something similar they can't call it IPS. In all cases they've looked about the same to my untrained eye.

No! I would never ever buy a tn panel. It look horrible. I always to for ips panel. Alittle more expensive yes but it is worth it for me. The contrast/colours are so much better, and i dont like washed out picture. Move ur head slightly to the side/up or sown with a tn panel and u will se the colours be washed out. Is just comes down to how picky u are. I gladly pay 500$ extra to get a good ips panel.

Just to make it clear, he tested the 15” version with full rtx 2070 graphics card. 17” version only has 144 hz display but better cooling due to bigger space available for the cpu and gpu under the laptops skin.

@@GozetaZero Still going strong after almost a year. I can run Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080 at max settings and get 50-60 fps (raytracing dips the fps by about 10-15 fps)

Hey Jarrod, I highly recommend checking out the coolermaster u3 plus cooling pad. It has had a hugely positive effect on my asus scar gl703vm with full 1060 and 7700hq mainly due to manual placement of 3 80mm fans. Great product at a great price!

Hey, great video, i think you should include "gaming - silent mode" as well, I used zephyrus M older one in this mode and I found it rather great, I lost like 10-40fps but machine was nearly silent and you can use internal speakers easily, I think some people would appreciate that . Cheers

same, on my gx701 I only used balanced mode, with gsync on and Witcher 3 still runs at over 90fps. The difference between balanced and turbo was only about 1-2% and not worth the almost doubling in noise from the fans.

Nice video ! Now about the laptop..meh seems okey on paper but i think the only gpu at the moment that can benefit more from 240hz is only 2080. And i would like to see a better thermal solution on newest laptops

Dare to open your laptop to see how bad asus are at applying paste. It's often really funny. Changing it with like gc extreme and adding high quality pads (grizzly/fujipoly) will drop your temps by 20 or more degrees.

Thanks! I think it depends what you're playing, for esports titles you're using lower settings so the GPU matters less anyway, you'd need a killer CPU with boosted power limit + undervolt like the Helios 300 to get high FPS at lower settings.

I bought an ASUS Scar III two months ago. Mine was the 17.3" version with an i9 9880h, RTX 2070 and 32 GB or RAM. (G731GW) I have never been so disappointed in my life! It was constantly underperforming...due to the Power Limit Throttling I think. Games Like Far Cry 5, Resident Evil 2 RE, The Evil Within 2 were running at 60-70 FPS with frequent drops to 50. In Overwatch I never got above 90 FPS on Epic settings. The temperatures were surprisingly good though: CPU 84-90 degrees Celsius GPU 76-82 degrees Celsius (according to MSI Afterburner and HW Monitor) After I had returned it I bought the MSI GE75 RAIDER but still no luck as far as performance goes :(

Being based in Dubai, I obviously had to pay much more than the "original" price as compared to Western nations. I went for the Scar II instead of III. I felt this laptop was a "smaller" version of the Scar II (which I currently own). Sure it's the next/newer version when it comes to model and specs but I'm actually pleased with my Scar 2 (GTX 1070 more as I actually have a numpad and looks better overall. Not gonna lie but in my opinion, having RGB lighting bar in front is so much better than having it all across the laptop. It's way too flashy in Scar 3 since it goes all the way to sides. At one point, I actually felt like just using one basic colour (white light) throughout as it's more soothing, if you know what I mean. I'm already satisfied with the performance on the Scar 2, at least for the games I mostly play (DOTA 2 & GTA V online on max settings with ultimate FPS satisfaction). I feel Scar 3 was introduced just for the sake of being alive in the competition. I was waiting for the Scar 3 to hit the market before purchasing the Scar 2 and I, for once, was scared if I should've waited long enough for it but honestly I'm glad and happy I went for Scar 2 instead. I'll be keeping mine for another couple of years until they come up with something that's definitely worth the upgrade.

In reality these Asus laptops are pretty understated. You can turn the lighting off and it doesn't look far off a business laptop. Bit bigger maybe but the mostly metal / carbon look construction has good design aesthetic.

Hey Jarrod, as always great video and impressiv details from the maschines. Don‘t be to hard about the Scar 3 . My Scar 3 runs with an undervolt of 0,190 v and the Temps of the cpupacking is at 79 average. No thermalthrottling or powerthrottling with the undervolt. Maybe you got a bad unit or im Lucky in the Siliconlottery. All good things for you and your Channel. Best and detailed specs you can find on RU-vid.

Is there any way you'd be open to doing a review on the Eluktronics Mech 17, 2070 variant in particular? I'm planning on buying it due to its price efficiency, but the more I see of the name brands the less confident I am in the Eluktronics.

Not possible, they are based in the US and the return shipping + tax issues is too expensive to make it worthwhile for either of us. That said, they use the Tongfang chassis which is resold around the world, and I've reviewed these on the channel under the 'aftershock' and 'infinity' brands. Overall it's a good chassis, bob of all trades youtube channel has good videos on the models specifically from eluktronics if that helps.
