ASUS Strix OC - GTX 1080 & 1070 Review

I been getting ASUS graphics cards since the 680 and they have never let me down. That being said I just purchased the ASUS Strix 1070. Love the look this year as well.

I recently purchased the Asus Strix GTX 1070 (non-OC). Coming from my GTX 760 this thing is a complete beast. The highest stable settings I can currently run are 1808 Proc clock and 9202 mem clock. The power target will only go +12 in comparison to the OC series which goes to +20. Note: The card never goes above 60C and I don't have it set to use more than 65% of the fan speed. The LED system installed on the GPU looks really great.

I can attest for this review. I have a Strix 1070. I have the non OC edition. it cost me $420 on Amazon. At the moment I have it overclocked to +226+450. Boost speeds constantly hit over 2100 MHz and the ram is clocked a little under 9GHz. All this, and the temperatures DO NOT BREAK 61C UNDER LOAD. Absolutely amazing. Also, it's quite the looker. Get yourself one.

The 1080 Strix is the one I want, currently running the 780 DirectCU II OC, the same lineup before it became Strix. Very happy with that, and cosmetically, the 1080/1070 Strix' look great, love the black to let the light's color do the coloring.

I have the RoG Strix 1080 non-OC and have it overclocked during gaming around 2ghz.. absolutely LOVE these cards, they're insane! Thanks for the review, great job.

I bought one myself in July and it's an amazing card. Defo not a 4k sweetspot but for 1440p gaming, it's bloody fantastic.

This is the card I have, and I love it. Max OC 2114, stable. Still stays cool even under load.

I have the strixx 1070 voltage set to 100% OC's to 2101 +400 to the memory, with good case flow and rather high ambient temps (21c ambient) never goes above 75c. very happy with the card

I was planning on picking up the Zotac 1070 Amp Extreme but this being $15 less and a tad bit faster changes my mind, thanks for the review.

Just picked one up. Big thumbs up from me. Of course I was running a 780 GTX before do I was bound to be impressed.

I love my Asus ROG OC GTX 1070 Stix. It stomps through games on ultra @ 1440P on my 165hz monitor and easily hits +2100MHz gpu clock.

I might have the opportunity to get the GTX 1070 Strix for 300$ (brand new one, warranty still on) this week, just have to wait for the seller's answer. It will be my best deal of all hardware purchases.

As an owner of the ASUS ROG Stryx 1070, I'm happy as fuck. It's a beast for 1440p and 1080p. It's silent, fast and overclocks like a champ, especially the memory.

I'm buying the ASUS GTX1070 because their production methods are sure to guarantee more consistent quality and performance, as well as keeping their prices competitive (although there's not much we can do about how individual countries slug us with duties and taxes!), but I can't quite stretch to a GTX1080 for what I need my PC for!

I have the Asus Strix OC 970 in my case and it's great. Got it for a good price too since I got it right around its end of life.

I own that 1080 and can confirm with some tweaking I lock a steady 2094 with GPU boost. I utilize the PWM headers on my silent noctua case fans for when the system is under load. As my video editing software for work utilizes nvidia cuda cores my workstation is so quiet I often hear the 4TB hdd spin up when needed. I have mine in a Define R5BO windowless case. The only thing I don't like is that you cannot set the PWM headers to less than 50% or lower than 60C or above 80C. I cannot set each PWM header individually. Meaning I can't have my ideal setup of the back vent fan running at 10% under no load, 30% under medium load and 50% under high load. I don't have my card's fans come on until 80C with a 50% case fan exhaust at 79C. The case fans barely ever run under workloads, but while I'm gaming at 1440p games like Diablo 3 will run the card at 99-100%. My temps will usually sit at around 79-81c then shoot back down to 75 once the fans blow that excess temperature off. CPU doesn't suffer in this scenario as it's temp never goes above 67C (i7 6700K @ 4.7Ghz) I have had several conversations with ASUS about the software not saving profile information correctly, deleting my fan curves, or simply failing to start on boot. I addressed these by uninstalling the application with revo and shift deleting out any temp data it left behind. By doing a clean install it seems to stay highly functional without these issues. My only other complaint is that the software tends to leave the GPU at base clock when you set the nvidia control panel to maximum power. This will warm your room up fairly quickly as it will sit at 1600 something Mhz @ 1% utilization with no applications utilizing the card at all. Seems like the app does something to the nvidia driver that prevents the card from going back down to 135/203mhz. I remedied this by using optimal power and doing a fresh install of both the application and nvidia driver. Also dont use team viewer for remote access with the gpu program running, it will glitch out hard. I'm still waiting for Asus to get back to me about the PWM fan %'s but I installed the LP adapter on all my Noctua fans in mean time. Just for the love of God don't use AI Tweak II V1.22.1

At first I was gonna get the EVGA 1080 SC, but I have an Asus MoBo, and kinda wanted to keep the bigger components in the family. Plus, that Asus Aura RGB sync tho 😍😍

I'm myself got tired from all plastic coolers which come with most gpus nova days, that's why I went with evga gtx 1070 ftw, nice metallic accents and amazing lights, never mind the cooling solution it self. I hope next generation of aftermarket coolers from other brands will follow evga's metallic design path, and we will see more of decent looking coolers in future, let plastic stay in past where it belongs, we have many other nicer materials to work with.

according to HC's written review. The MSI Gaming Z is significantly quieter and runs 5c cooler with more consistent performance. So I don't understand how they think the Asus one is better. Also the Node 202 is a great candidate for the Asus card since it's case fans only cool the GPU and not many mini ITX boards have 2 fan headers. It also helps with cable management.

I could see the PWM connectors being useful for side panel fans that would blow directly onto the video card. I agree on the software as well. I don't know why companies have to come out with multiple software utilities to control the same piece of hardware. It's annoying and very confusing for less tech savvy users.

I really like those pwm fan connectors, especially if they are controllable via software. A lot of people who want high end cards will try and save money elsewhere, like a cheap motherboard that may not have a lot of fan connectors, and the spare 2 on these cards would help a lot.

I know they’re hard to get here, but would love to see a review of the Galax Hall of Fame 1070 and 1080. I just bought the 1070 for an all white build and it at least looks like a beast. Have to wait for all the components to try it out. :-(

I have ASUS Strix 1070 and its great. Always good temps and high fps. In OC mode 2000 mh with no problem. Every game i play is on ultra settings with i5 4440 8gb ram

got my gtx 1080 strix oc for $678.99 on amazon.. used nowinstock to help let me know when in stock.. if you dont buy when in stock, they will be sold out in miunutes. on a side note if you go to say amazon and the card is not in stock it will have a price of 800 instead of 678.99 when in stock

I like this card but I prefer the side plate 1080 logo on the EVGA FTW edition. I also think the RGB looks cooler on that card.

My Gigabyte 1070 G1 does 1975mhz on the core when put in oc mode. I couldn't be happier to be honest. Not willing to fiddle around with a manual overclock. Job done for me and the card was £30 cheaper here in the UK. To me the asus card looks better and has the extra fan pin headers which would have been nice but the performance difference / luck of the gpu core draw didn't make much sense to me.

Just got 1070 strix and its amazing

I bought one about a month. Its basically perfect

My Strix 980 is overclocked to over 1500Mhz (in game), 4000Mhz memory. The only issue is the fan noise a high temps, but you can't have everything. Asus cards seem to tolerate a higher overclock for some reason.

I had a hard time deciding between the Strix 1070 and the FTW 1070. I ended up getting the EVGA 1070 because they have better customer service.

Would be interesting to see you put these up against the Zotac Amp Extreme 1070 and 1080.... The 1080 is an absolute monster

When you talk about the pines for the the system fans and you said that it was only for the graphics card that is not true. The card also gets information from the CPU and takes that into consideration and comes up with a fan speed for both

I got my 1070 today! I love it!

I have the 1070. the LED cant get a true red color or a white. The aura Software needs an update... hopefully soon. also there is a single small LED light on the card that stay white. if youre a perfectionist it can be annoying. you can see it on the vid close to the power input. Overclocking is easy with the GPU tweak ii. (being a first time overclocker) i got mine to a stable 1997Mhz OC card is big and fits MOST Mid towers. i have the cooler master master case 5 pro. and the side clearance with the drive tray installed - barely makes it. but i removed the tray for airflow reasons. my card sits at a reason 65-68 degree Celsius when under load. even on a hot day it doesnt go over 71 degrees. and i only have 2 front 140mm* fans. 1 rear exhaust and 2 top fans (running at like 10%) EDIT: i use custom fan speed setup that stay at low fan speeds before 75 Degrees C. TDLR: card aura cant get FULL color range. easy to overclock. stays cool even in hot environment.

I like the idea of those fan headers. It`s a great addition if you want to watercool this card without using a dedicated fan controller with temperature sensors. Is the warranty still void when you take the fan of? If yes, I´ll have to go with EVGA..

I can think of one way the fan ports may be beneficial (other than extra fan ports ofc). The cables might less likely touch the gpu's fans. I've got two fans in the side connected to the motherboard and the cables hang just above my gpu card..

Uhm.. Im pretty sure the Strix cards shuts the fans off when the GPU is below 65c per default. (this can be configured in software ofcause). My 980 Strix does this and its awesome, especially combined with a corsair PSU that shuts its fan off. now add a T-balancer for CPU and Case fans, and you can nearly if not totally shut down all/most fans when just surfing and shite. goes well in a be quite! Base 800 case btw.

I`d really like to see a similar Video about the Gigabyte 1070/1080 Xtreme Gaming, because they are among the best Cards, just as Asus` GPUs. And, obviously, some comparisons to other Cards would be nice.

Dmitry Novoselov, i always respect yr channel but can u review GTX 1060, 1070 & upcoming 1050Ti with GDRR5 Micron VRAM chip? where's the micron review & how come all come with samsung? try to purchase consumer product from local store that come with micron chip. the micron is crippled & i don't think a simple vbios can resolve all the issue. i hope u guys make a vid regarding this fiasco thang. honesty is the best policy. e.g linustechtips, jayztwocents, paul h/w, bitwit, science studio, h/w unboxed, oc3d etc. none of them review micron GTX 1060/1070

i think your review totally underestimated the value of the 2 fan headers of the card. Especially with the 1080 most people that have one will have a high end cooling solution for their cpu so (like a aio that exhausts to the top) so they wont need the casefans to be controlled by the cpu i have my 2 intake fans connected to my strix 1080 which makes the pc very quiet while idling (fan stop applies to the case fans aswell) and while gaming you want your card to get as much fresch air as possible. I can only imagine one situation where that feature is not beneficial and that one is very rare aswell. That would be a high load on the cpu whithout stressing the gpu on a mediocore air cooler and i cant think of a natural situation (not cpu oc stresstest ofc) where that would be the case! so the fan headers are the main feature of this cart that sets it even more ahead of its competition!

Just got 2 Strix 1070's. Battlefield 1 at 4k maxed out runs like a breeze. 980s sli I was only getting 40-55 fps on medium settings.

i would LOVE a 3 slot strix with the same design(ofc adjusted to 3 slot) tho, but i think i will wait for a 1080ti if there will ever be one, the performance just isnt there jet with any 1080 :P maybe a temporarly 1070 will do if i gotta wait for the next gen :D

Nice review, although would have liked to see some benches with O/C figures to see if the 1070 can get any closer to 1080, as I would think typically people can achieve a better (fast & cool) O/C on 1070 vs 1080. Having said that, it might make sense the 1070 receives a "Damn Good Value" award, but I don't think the 1080 is good value, unless the definition of "good" has changed to "expensive af value." Splitting Awards by giving 1080 a Damn Good Performance Award, makes this look less like a commercial. And don't try to sell me on the 1080 gets value award because it's less than a "stupidly expensive af value" Titan X.

Silicon lottery def applies here to these gpus. I had 2 OC editions. Identical system I literally was just flipping gpus for the past week, Amd rx580s dont seem to have a big variance that i noticed they were all within 15mhz. I have had only 2 1070 ocs but One will goto 1923 during fortnite 1440p epic. Other boosts to 1974 during fortnite, Unfortunately, I sold the better card thinking there couldnt possibly be diff, I guess 50mhz isnt a big deal. But others here may want to take this in Im guessing its the gpu boost only able to OC so high. Both cards perform identical. under 60c even while gaming. drivers everything was the same. so I assume i just got a lesser chip the 2nd time around. One thing i did have to do to achieve the under 60c with these cards was have a good intake fan setup bringing cool air onto the gpu.

Has anyone noticed than when he's speaking in the ad part it sounds like.. always ending on high notes, knowing that he's selling something he doesn't care about (or completely like and think is good). It's pretty funny.
