Thanks for making this, it was a big help. Summary of what you need to buy if using Gelid pads: 3x 2mm 1x 0.5mm 1x 3mm These are all 80x40 pads. Peel one side, then cut with razor, do not use scissors, or cut before removing the plastic or you will squish the pad reducing its thickness. There are a lot of sources out there that are very wrong about the pad sizes. This video is the most accurate, although sort of difficult to follow due to how it flows. I found the pic you linked in the description after I had put everything back together 😂. That would have been quite useful. As for my results, after replacing every pad + the extra one on the pipes, here is what I got using occt gpu stress test for 1 hour. [all default settings, 100% power, no overclock. Physical switch set on "performance"][21C/70F ambient with open air case] [Memory Max] 110 within 5 minutes before (thermal limit) --- 68 after [GPU Max] 64 before --- 68.8 after //I'm assuming it's a bit higher due to the heatsink actually cooling everything else now too, rather than making terrible contact with the memory and only effecting GPU core temps, but honestly 4 degrees could just be margin of error with my very unscientific testing environment aka the closet at the end of the hallway// [Hotspot Max] idk before --- 88.6 after [Fanspeed Max] Max while thermal throttling before --- 84% after I used mx6 on the gpu because it's what I had. I also pre-spread it which is highly recommended for a gpu since it does not have an ihs. No comment on the longevity of mx6 as a gpu paste, since I've literally had it on there for less than a day, but if you're buying paste for this job anyways, just grab something more vetted for gpus like thermalright tfx. tfx is an absolute pain to use though, so be prepared for that. It's super thick, and mainly just sticks to itself, it's like trying to spread a booger on to your gpu.

Thanks a lot for your great video description, I have the same GPU as you and I’m getting 82-84C memory temp with the thermal pads upgrade at 69% PL, 85% fan, 1200 mem clock for around 99 MH/s. My gpu temp is stable at 46C. I had a memory temp of 100C in the same mining condition before upgrading.

First, thanks for the useful video. Managed to drop from 92-98 degrees to 82-86 degrees on 3080 TI tuf. (24-25 ambient temperature, 90% fan speed) My contribution to this video is: -left and right pad you replaced first and added on 3:31 seems to me that are 3mm both instead of 2mm so i picked 3mm. -i did not replace 0.5mm pads and one on the left that is 1.5mm -used 1 pack of 2mm and 1 pack of 3mm pads 45x85mm and it was enough, just try to optimize the space you have on this pads. (i made last pad on 23:20 from 3 pieces because its lowe priority pad and i think thats ok) It seems that core temperature is little higher, averaging around 50 degrees, and i think it was around 47 degrees. Maybe i did put arctic mx4 wrong, because of trying to fit cooler on the gpu and wiggling it back and forth. Also higher hotspot i think
@migs5492

Only a few things from someone that does such stuff for 20 years now: - never place ANY pc hardware on towls or tissue that can get static -> you can kill you hardware like that - remove the fan connectors to properly handle that GPU and not leaning it again a cooler or such stupid stuff -> tiny SMDs can be damaged or ripped off and your card is done - my god i use that amount of thermal paste for 2 CPUs and 2 GPUs -> you waste a ton on a single GPU repasting :( - never drop anything on the GPU / PCB like you did in the video ( as you didn't attach cables and couldn't handle it safely ) -> good by SMD or worst case you hit the die and damage it ( yes this can happen ) -> overall my card never exceeds 82°C on silent bios and without ANY mods, same thermal pads applied as on yours ( i checked ) -> maybe its time to think about proper case and cooling ( i have only 3x 120mm fans in @ 500rpm, 1x 140mm fan out @ 500rpm to maintain overpressure and avoid dust collection from any open spot in the case that has no dust filter -> very silent, very cool and clean )

rather too much thermal paste then not enough, considering he didn't spread the thermal paste over the die like he should have. Using all that paste likely made it so that the entire die got covered. Personally when i repaste GPU dies I spread the paste to make sure the die is fully covered.

Bro, I think the most crucial pad was the first one you installed, to help the vram touch the heatsink above, but the second time you open the card I can see that it isnt making good contact with the heatsink, there is no visible traces on the pad. I have an 3080 gaming x trio, same problem, the cold plate wasn't touching the heatsink and just by adding some pads I literally dropped 26 C on the vram and the core temp rised a bit, since the cooler now was actually getting the high vram temp.

Is there a way to slowdown/underclock the 3080 VRAM to keep it cooler? I prefer silence over speed.... I don't care about getting the fastest MHs. What are your VRAM temps if you put the Fan speed at 75%? It is so much quieter at 75%...
@migs5492
@migs5492 2 года назад
I would install MSI Afterburner and lower the power limit % until you get to a good temp at that 75% fan speed. My guess is the power limit between 70-80% would get you there. I just lowered my fan to 75% and my power limit is at 75% and I am getting 98Mh and my VRAM is 84c. It is cool this morning so my guess it would be a little higher, maybe 88c at warmer ambient temps.

Saw that some people might've used a copper shim on the CPU when doing this as the thicker pads mean the heatsink wasn't contacting the CPU as well - going by your temps it doesn't look like you've got any such issue - temps seem to be OK when you run something with the CPU itself at 100% power rather than downvolted for mining?

What are the sizes for the ones you DIDN'T replace at 21:41 & 21:44? And what was the size for that last one you replaced at the end 22:54 2. How much material did you need? 1 pack of each size will suffice?
@migs5492
@migs5492 2 года назад
1. Those were the VRM chips. The VRM chips on the left were 1.5mm. I was originally going to triple stack the 0.5mm to cover but decided not to change the original pads. The VRM chips on the right are 2.0mm. 2. I used one pack of each 85x45, 0.5mm, 2.0mm and 3.0mm. I essentially ran out of 2.0mm for that last pad I didnt replace. If you want to be safe to have enough for that you can buy two packs. Although I feel the VRAM were the most important and I am still getting good temps without replacing those two VRM chips.

@@migs5492 Regarding point #1. Was your 1.5mm VRM pad in pretty good condition when you opened your card? I've been mining on my 3080 TUF OC since February and have no idea what wear and tear there is (been keeping my card under 95C for most of those months). I have been noticing my temps going up slowly over the last couple of months. I want to buy the 0.5, 2 and 3mm pads but not sure on the 1.5mm. The first 3 alone are pretty expensive. I plan to replace my pads sometime in the very near future using this video as a direct reference.

@@vivisimonvi My card was pretty new. It was about 3 weeks old when I replaced the pads so they were probably in better shape. For the 1.5mm, i was toing to triple stack the 0.5mm to make 1.mm. I am sure there would have been enough because i didnt use much of the 0.5. They are not the easiest to deal with though because they are so thin.

@@migs5492 So I'm in the process of replacing the pads as described in your video. Just to let you know, the pad you replace at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FMy3vR2JxGw.html is definitely thicker than 0.5mm (it looks like it's 2mm). Is there a reason you went with a much smaller size? Just to be safe I won't be replacing that pad.

I think the 2mm and 3mm are the most important. You may be able to do without the 0.5mm and leave the old ones. My card was in pretty good condition so the pads weren’t ruined. Some other cards got ruined just opening up the card.

great tutorial the only thing I would recommend is on the GPU die you should spread the thermal paste. On a CPU it doesn't really matter if there's a little bit of the IHS that has no thermal paste on it but since there is no IHS on a GPU die you need to make sure it's completely covered with thermal paste.

I managed to to get to around 99.5 MH/s and my VRAM fluctuates between 84-90 depending on ambient temps. My room has terrible circulation and temps outside range from 16c to 38c. I also don’t keep my house really cool. On average it’s usually 86c with the side panel off and 88-90 with the panel on. We’ll see how this changes during the winter.

hi, great video. I read about (what do You think?): "My best result so far is 1.5mm on front 2.5mm on the back (2 + 0.5 mm) 3mm between the heat pipes and the small heat sink AND a clamp over the front part of the card I am getting 125 MH/h at 88-92 deg (1200 core, 10901 memory) I used thermal right odyssey. I had to do a few iterations to get to this to work 1.5mm on front,2mm back, only 2mm on one of sinks between pipes 1.5mm on front,2mm back, 3x3mm between sink+pipes -> Worse 2mm on front,2mm back, 3x3mm between sinks +pipes-> too much, the die looses contact When i applied a clamp i think it improved the contact between the heat pipes."

@Globespy 2 года назад
Yep, Asus are hardcore about doing anything on the card. I called them a few days ago to ask about changing thermal pads as VRAM temps even in gaming seemed too high, and their response was basically if they detect I even removed a screw, they will void the warranty. I posed the hypothetical, if I just ran the GPU and it died because of say poorly aligned or missing thermal pads from the factory, then they would replace under warranty. Insane that they would rather the thing killed itself than an owner carefully check and replace thermal pads to avoid such a situation! Sure, it's probably illegal if it's proven that the fault was hardware related and nothing to do with changing pads, which is why you should run a new GPU for a few months before doing anything to make sure there's no sub-par components that will usually show within that time. If the GPU works without issue for say 3+ months then it's likely there's no factory defects.

@@Globespy replacing the pads doesent void the warranty. they must prove that your modification is the cause of the problem. but its pretty certain that you have to go to court for the money. neither us law nor german law do prevent self-repair. those stickers are illegal, but noone bothers to fight for it.

KRITICAL Thermal Pads has full front card pads pre-cut that are 20 W/mK pads for $39.00 Bucks, this cards upgrade kit is found here: kriticalpads.com/asus-3080-tuf Also, putting four, ( 4 ) M5 or M4 Nylon washers under the heat sink bracket on the back improves the heat sink contact without causing harm to the pcb board; as seen in a video on Gamers Nexus; I now put these plastic washer on all cards with that four pronge heat sink bracket; between the pcb and the bracket before putting the screws through; some heat sinks will shift even with the screw snugged up good. Most thermal pads when doubled up create air pockets; and that negates the heat transfer to the sink; like most .. I have done it before; but try to avoid it if possible, there is a thermal putty that you can break a chunk off, and roll it into a ball in the approximate thickness you need and it compress's pretty good and dosen't leave a slight bend in the pcb as some thermal pads do that do not compress; I tried to find the brand today; but no joy, I thought it was K5 Pro, but that wasn't it .. I think that I seen it on a Reddit thread, or Linus Tech Tips for anyone that is interested and may have better luck finding it. Thanks for the content; I have some of these cards coming in; and it was a relief to see the thermal pad layout is pretty simple and basic. If you ever replaced the thermals on a MSI RTX 2080 Ventus; it has different size and thickness pads every where; like the older MSI GTX 1070 Armor OC's is that same way; too many pads everywhere. Peace
