I think your grandson would say: "OLED-what?" "It is a screen technology for home use" "Oh, grandpa, you sweet old man, you mean that ancient technology from before the 2040's? We don't use that anymore, we have our augmented contact lenses."
Even 2 years later this monitor holds up extremely well. If you pause at 5:40 you can see the refresh rate compliance and overshoot is near perfect at 240hz so I use the monitor at 240hz fixed refresh rate. Even in 2023 I'd recommend buying this. I also have a 1440p 240hz samsung odyssey g7 and for games like valorant I still much prefer this monitor (the 25 inch version that is)
Me, still having a 10 year old, HD Ready monitor... I feel like the built-in speakers are the most useless thing in any recently released monitor thats above $150
@Josh Wallace my aoc 24g2 is the version with extra speakers and a usb hub... didnt cost more. it is an okay extra, yeah the speakers are shit, but they are an extra
built in speakers are something I appreciate, since I always use headphones and don't want a set of speakers cluttering things. So when occasionally I want my wife or kids to be able to hear, flipping to some shitty monitor speaker is perfect. The actual useless feature is probably the extra 40hz, given the already small to non existent benefit of going from 144 to 240
I use my built in speakers all the time on my asus MG279Q. They come in handy for youtube viewing when just sitting about eating lunch or casually watching content. I'll use my headphones otherwise but the speakers are very nice to have.
I guess the speakers are there to support consoles for people who don't have a TV. It is sort of a gimmick. But to me it is a welcome one even with the crap quality.
@@fVNzO Soooo terrible though. It was one of the features I looked for when I bought my monitor and they're basically useless. Zero bass, zero treble all mids. I laughed so hard the first time I heard them.
DUDE I'M SO HAPPY!! This morning I saw your Omen HP 27" 1440p review, right as I finish and settle on buying it, it's sold out everywhere and don't feel like waiting so I settled for this one (but didn't know you review it). Picked the last one at BestBuy, came home, tested it. Now, only to see (and watch) that you did review the VG279QM and that your title boosts it. Not only do I feel good about my purchase, I can't wait to see what you can teach me about it! Yay! :D
Thats pretty much what Monitors with an actual Nvidia Gsync Module can do. They adjust the overdrive impulse based on your refresh rate. Sadly Freesync monitors do not have that kind of feature.
@@TheThunder168 its not an g sync exclusive feature. Some freesync monitors have it. Its extremely difficult to make for the vendor. Thats why going for gsync (which already has it) can be easier but ofcourse more expensive aswell.
I have the 24.5'' VG259QM version of this and I love it. When I first ordered it, got one dead pixel but seller replaced it very fast with no questons asked and been loving it ever since. No other issues at all. Chose it over this just because of better ppi. 😎💪🏻
1 year later... How many dead pixels you got since then if any? I saw so many people complaining about this issue. I would like to buy this one but.. It's kind of a bummer for me tho. I'm thinking about this one or alienware w2720hfa.
I think that the idea behind 27" 1080p monitors, despite the pixel density concern, is that compared to 24-25" panels, you can put 27-inchers farther away from your face to produce the same effect while being more easy on the eyes for longer game sessions. I use a 27" 1080p 165Hz monitor (Asus VG278QR) and I have to say, playing for 8 or so hours straight doesn't make my eyes feel fatigued at all and I've been doing that pretty consistently since the start of quarantine here.
I agree. I have both an LG 27 inch 1080p IPS 144hz and an AOC 24G2 with 24 inch ips 1080p 144hz. I mainly use Lg 27 inch and prefer it. The pixel density does not bother me at all. Plus my gaming Pc can run games easy 1080p res.
At 2:55 you should put a clip of you describing the monitor's flexibility on the screen while you were making the adjustments. Would be extra work, but would've caught me off-guard and imo would be humorous. Awesome vid!
Thank you for the review!! I suggested this on the last review and appreciate you listening to your viewers request very much🙏. Alien ware recently released the AW2720HF which is also a 240hz ips display of you are interested in continuing the series. However as of now I’m sold on the Asus monitor. Keep doing your thing!
Have y’all seen the secret OD120 option for the smaller VG259QM? Average response time of 2.6ms with the slowest at 3.4ms giving 100% of the transitions inside the overclocked refresh window of 280Hz. I recently applied this setting and it’s insane how fast and clear everything is above 280fps!
Upgraded to this from benq xl 144hz. Was plesently surprised by the image quality and clarity. I use ELMB in csgo and it does make things more clear. Also the much better contrast was a surprise. to my eyes 27 inch 1080p is fantastic and i can't see individual pixels from 20cm away. with 24 inch i had to put my face right in front of the monitor when playing csgo. Only thing missing is automatic monitor profiles. It would have been nice to have automatic profiles to each game.
I actually see less overshoot (white thing around moving object/enemies) in MSI MAG251RX (240Hz/Faster Mode - 3,1ms response time) than I saw in Asus VG279QM/VG259QM with 240Hz/80OD (3,6~ms response time). I had choosen the MSI over Asus and I love it.
@@astroyt7389 msi better Overdrive for even lower fps than 200. You just use faster and forget about everything. Asus has better stand (if that matters to you). Msi has a bit worst shadow boost. Asus has better crosshair overlay. Msi ofc has better response time and input lag. I chose msi due to better colors and speed. Don't care about rest.
@@sebash6 i am planing to buy msi and need your opinion on msi motion clarity and i play valorant a lot ,is the motion clarity as good as the benq 240 hz
@@stewartmervin3470 there is no a lot of fast movement in valorant so I would say either msi, Asus would be ok. Unless u don't care about colors then get BenQ (TN)
I prefer 27 inch even 1080p. I use on my gaming PC a LG 27GL650F 144hz 1080p ips and an AOC 24G2 ips 1080p 144hz. I always play games and mainly use the LG 27 inch. Excellent review Tim. When prices go down for this monitor, I might consider it.
@@smellypooper69 it depends if your pc or console can handle those specs, you'll notice a difference between 144hz and 280hz but it won't be a huge difference like going from 60 to 120hz in my opinion.
It's thinking "You should spend me on English lessons and use correct grammar". Answered your question for you. You can thank me later. Also I'm fully aware English is not everyone's first language, that doesn't excuse not being able to use correct grammar when you can construct the rest of the comment so well.
Please make a review of the Acer NITRO VG252QX 240hz IPS monitor, it looks like a really interesting budget option especially considering it's 1080p at 25". :)
Looked everywhere but couldn't find a detailed review. Thanks for reviewing this. I feel like Asus is selling this at a discounted price to not let the viewsonic xg270 and acer nitro xv273x compete. Both of those are Ips panels at 240hz 27 inch but they're definitely not going for 400 dollars. So the extra 40 frames really becomes more of a selling point. That was before i saw the acer nitro xv273x go on for sale for 350 dollars. Now 27 inch, 240hz, 1080p, ips gamig display for 350. What a time to be alive. Just ordered it.
your videos helped me in my purchase for a fast performing monitor and i gotta say the aorus kd25f name is still easy to say and its still a beast! thank you Hardware Unboxed
ELMB @ 240/270Hz might've interesting to test, given ELMB locks the OD @ 80 and seemingly anything below 200Hz in this case has noticeable overshoot with this model, hence why I guess the 144Hz here has the inverse ghosting and crosstalk. For whatever reason, the 280Hz ELMB not much clearer than the 280Hz with OD 80/ 140HZ ELMB seems a bit clearer overall, safe for the artefacts. This makes me wonder whether 240/270Hz might've yielded a better result. Sadly, with fixed refreshes 165, 180 and 200 are not options. Unless you're using VRR + FPS Limiter or something.
Man i hate researching monitors All those diffrent color gamut percents, diffrent response times Not knowing which are color calibrated and which arent 🤷 Would love to have a simply list: 1440p 144hz best color accuracy out of box Etc etc
@@Hahalol875 They really are very similar maybe on paper you see tthe differences clear as day but from a subjective point of view going from 144 to 240 is like going from 100 or 120 to 144 it's noticable but barely.
@@Hahalol875obviously it's better, but it doesn't improve your aim unless you like 360 quick scoping every shot... its not worth the prices at the moment, I'd rather save for more processing power b4 going to 240hz.
The main thing that bothers me about the G7 models is the 1000r curve. I can see it working well with the G9 ultrawide, but it just seems excessive for a 16:9 panel, the 32" might be better, but it's just not needed on a 27". I changed from a curved Samsung VA panel to the LG 27gl850 a while ago and I think I prefer the flat panel over the curved Samsung (the panel tech itself is hands down better, the flat vs curved thing is a bit more subjective) I'd be interested to see how it works out though, if it can genuinely compete with top end IPS panels in terms of response times then it could be quite good, my LG doesn't deal with blacks as well as my old VA Samsung did, that's about the only thing I miss.
@@astroyt7389 27" 2560x1440p 165hz. Was on 1080p 60hz since forever and decided to finally upgrade. One thing I'll say is that at first you don't really notice the difference until you go back and try a 1080p 60hz are are just like "EWWW I didn't know this was THAT bad"- could never go back. Soo smooth, crisp, and great for gaming. The resolution is nice, but the real star is that refresh rate and ELMBsync omg, you actually see the frames your graphics card is able to pump out. When it's 1080 its still super clear! I use this resolution when playing online and it's been great
@@astroyt7389 I have this VG279QM, and to be honest if u playing games/watching movies/videos on youtube its not that bad for 1080p with 27" but for other things, yeah its quite blurry for my eyes xD. I`ve been using acer predator XB271hu (1440p 27") for 4 years and just sold it because its already out of warranty and i don`t play alot of games lately and yeah 1440p on 27" way way way better xD But i can`t complain since this monitor only cost less than half of that XB271HU prices xD
I’ve been eyeing the new Alienware AW2521HF. Their new 25” 240hz IPS offering seems like a great buy and I’d like to see how it stacks up against the competition. Review coming soon?
@@dutchdykefinger the problem is not just pixel density but also viewing distance. You normally sit a lot further away from a TV comparing to a monitor. That's why a 27 inch 1080p monitor is not a good idea.
I'm also keen to see this reviewed and compared to the 240hz ips monitors out there like Alienware AW2521HF as those two are currently what I'm tossing up against.
This is a great monitor I've had it for a month now. Modern Warfare crashes sometimes when I have the monitor overclocked to 280hz but its been perfectly stable at 240hz, which is still more than enough.
Shieftain honestly I turn my lg c8 oled on like one a week just cus I feel bad for not using it 😂 I don’t really watch tv or movies since I build my gaming setup
Things I'd like to see in monitors: Now: - More Gsync or other scalers that offer variable overdrive - Profiles per input - VESA support on everything - Making sure all the inputs can offer full performance - USB hubs with faster USB specifications Stretch: - OLED, Mini and Micro LED - HDR, as in 1000+ HDR. At consumer price points - Better out of the box calibration for all monitors, not just pro - The ability to flash calibration to the monitor instead of the system being used (perhaps a standard can be created to facilitate this across all brands)
Pity that all monitor manufacturers only care about quick cash instead of bringing innovations to the table and making even more cash than those "1 ms" 1080p 144hz rebrands.
I’m using BenQ ZOWIE XL2546 24.5 Inch 240Hz Gaming Monitor | 1080P 1ms for cs-go and love it. I’m waiting for the 360hx monitor to release. I’ll be upgrading my 8700k/1080ti to 10900k/3080ti too baby.
becouse freesync is AMD branding and amd hijacked it in the first place kinda becouse the tech behind it actually is VESA Adaptive-sync ofc amd has also made it work with HDMI what is a good thing.
Have finally purchased this one after watching your ind epth review. Firstly best wishes for your channel and Lots of love! keep up the amazing job you guys are doing..
@Hardware Unboxed , the VG259QM this monitor is 10 bit if you set the refresh rate to 144 or lower, only 240-280hz mode is 8 bit (no 6+FRC, true 8 bit at the two higher refresh rates)
Laptop displays don't use the same type of connection as an external monitor, ie HDMI, Display port, etc. This is because the laptop graphics card connects directly to the integrated display allowing for higher bandwith and therefore a larger refresh rate.
Monitor makers: Give me a freaking 2560x1080 240hz IPS display, please thank you. And go and tell Valorant and Overwatch they should allow 21:9 monitors so you can start selling 21:9 240hz monitors to everyone.
My friend was definitely going to pick it, but at the order time, it was out of stock. The monitor was priced at 300€ which was a « no brainer » option
micro led will be the next thing and looking at more loacal dimming zones + better colours id be alright with it if we get decent Strobing options havent had good strobing since crt
I’m stuck between vg279qm and vg27aq... 279qm has less backlight bleed and 280hz but has lower resolution at 1080p. 27aq has 1440p 165hz .... idkdkdkdkdk
11:35 you just got a bad panel I think. aperturegrille.com/reviews/ASUSVG279QM/ this review goes pretty in depth and the results were better. Panel variance I guess.
Hey man absolutely LOVED the video, also, I loved the city top view wallpaper that you used, it would be great if you could tell me the name of it. Thanks in advance!😊
@@westbrooke1174 you don't need to reach the target fps to benefit from higher refresh rates. It's how a 30 fps movie looks smoother on 144 to 280. Yeah target fps is really nice for your raw input from mouse to monitor but honestly I have 60 hz and just having 144 and reaching 60 fps easily is superior than just 60 on 60!
