@Jarrod know when we’ll see your review of the 2023 ASUS ROG Strix Scar 16 4090? Hoping that’s the sweet spot between G14 and Scar 18, hesitant to dive in before seeing your take on it. Thanks for all your hard work!
You are an absolute tool. You picked Nvidia sponsored games and then don't even show the other models in the 3d mark results because it makes Nvidia look bad.
to fix the overheating issue, I suggest installing a clean version of windows 11, and then downloading the drivers needed, set battery limit to 99% in asus care, and using g helper instead of armory crate. solved most issues with this laptop!
@@natedagreat6704 That helps, although the 5 units I've tried (4 used, 1 new), before I finally found a good G14 (a used one), had a variety of different temperatures and turbo Wattage loads. One throttled pretty badly out of the box. Surprisingly the 'good condition' one I got last from Best Buy had reasonable backlight bleed at the hinges, only hit 92C max in turbo stress testing, and could undervolt further to hit a peak of 91C at 72W TDP, at 5GHz across all 16 threads when there's no GPU load. Amazing machine, and I am happy to finally get one that performs excellent. Just needed to rub a couple marks off the lid with alcohol. G-Helper is a must - excellent utility. I would have picked a Lenovo over this thing if it wasn't for G-Helper. I will say that only the first unit I got had a "new" battery - reported higher capacity than "designed capacity." All the rest came with 3% battery wear/decreased capacity, including the new one I had shipped in. Doesn't matter - this thing does 10 hours easily in lighter-weight productivity apps, with a 4-Watt idle load at half brightness.
I bought a 2022 Zephyrus g14 on black Friday sale for 1350 cad with 6800hs and 6700s. Added some ram and storage (24 gb from 16 and 2tb from 512gb) and I love it. A gaming laptop in a thin and light body
Save up man, May take a long time but if its something you really want you put your mind to it, Find a side hustle, anything is possible, I’m lucky I only had to ask, but you can do something for yourself.
The 2022 is quite a good deal considering it has a similar build quality and great battery life for the price. I'm really tempted to get that model over the ZenBook Pro 14.
@@fidelisitor8953 But is Intel, not AMD... and AMD is a little superior CPU for now!!! Why: AMD's latest Zen-based processor is the most powerful consumer-grade chip.
Still love my G14 2021. Got it last year for cheaper. I just love how damn portable and sleek it is. Great for work and play. I do wonder why they went back to thermal paste on the GPU though. That is disappointing. Are they not allowed to put liquid metal on an Nvidia die or something?
It's actually PTM on the GPU this year. Maybe not Honeywell brand, but it's some type of PTM. Same thing they're using on the ROG Ally. Me and some other G14 owners who've repasted have noticed that.
Great review as always! Lenovo recently released their legion 5 slim with 7840HS, 4060 100W, and a 16” 16:10 1600p 165hz screen. The legion 7 slim AMD model is also on the way. Interestingly though the slim version of the legion 5/7 actually comes with more usb C ports than the legion 5/7 pro. Would u be testing these legion slim models to see how they compare to the smaller g14 with similar specs? Thanks
@@fernandoalcayaga8341 that’s unfortunate but maybe the battery life would be better as I noticed current gen amd laptop chips show lower battery life for some cases.
I got the 2022 G14 RX 6800S model. Super happy with it and I don't plan on replacing it any time soon. Just out of curiosity I checked the 2023 models with Nvidia's 4000 series GPU and compared to last year's models, this years models have idiotic prices...at least here in Eastern Europe. I genuinely feel bad for anyone who is in the market right now for these.
I just got the same laptop and I love it. Especially since I can undervolt cpu to -23 when playing games and this significantly improves performance. This improved cinebench scores by 1000 points. After updating the chipset drivers and the GPU drivers to AMD's, any heat issues I saw when out of the box completely disappeared. And it was very easy to do that.
@@grego15 it's great for games but when it comes to productivity it does lack behind Nvidia because amd drivers aren't that much optimised for productive workload such as rendering and 3D modelling
its unfortunate how asus only released the moonlight white color in all configurations in the us, it would be better if they released the black versions too in more expensive configurations
Its kinda pointless because IIRC it only runs at 125 TGP. You are probably better off with the 4080 and save $500. The 4080 seems to be the sweet spot, i dont think the 4090 is worth the cash. If you want a 4090 get a bigger laptop or better yet a desktop.
I got this about a month ago, and being my first laptop in more than a decade, it's very impressive. A couple notable things are: 1. at $1600, 512 GB is just not enough, I know they expect us to replace the internal SSD but 512 filled up in less than a day with just free games. The RAM is also only 16 GB, which isn't bad but you should pick up some more. 2. Turbo mode gets hot, I mean really warm, which wouldn't be a problem on its own, but even with the vapor chamber it struggles to lower temps. The laptop would go to 86 degrees consistently on more intense games, and just stay there, only dropping in menus to about 78 degrees. I would recommend running games on silent so long as you don't mind losing a dozen or so frames depending on the game. Silent almost always topped out at 82 for me, losing about a dozen frames on RDR2 on the highest settings. (~44 silent < 58 turbo) It isn't awful sometimes but I would just be careful trying not to run games for hours on turbo. 3. It's probably a game/driver issue, but this thing has a hard time differentiating between intense games and relaxed games. That 86-degree game I was talking about, was Slime Rancher. Fucking Slime Rancher. Slime Rancher should not make this thing sweat like it's RDR2. However, sales on this thing are incredible, I picked it up for $400 off, which is an incredible deal for this thing, which can run almost any game.
Nice, I got this laptop about a week ago and been loving it. I mainly use Silent Mode too for gaming but is it fine if the temps are in the high 80s? It’s my first gaming laptop and I want to make sure there’s no long term issues for the future
@@Xemnas283 Thinking about getting this one but have you messed with manual temp cap and fan curves in armory crate? Is it uncomfortable to use under load or is it fine to play games with?
@@Xemnas283 high 80s is a little worrisome, I think mine won't go above 80 on silent. my only worry with silent mode, and this laptop in general is CPU temps, which I've caught at 108° after a two hour session on silent!
Hi. I suggest you buy a laptop chiller pad, which runs off any USB port, to lower temperatures. Targus make very good quality ones for about $45. They're also tapered, which keeps any laptop level, when it's being used on your lap. Typical reductions in temperatures are 30%+.
Just got mine with the 4060, upgraded the ram to 32 gigs, and she’s a proper beast. I love it. My old laptop was a G8 HP pro book which is def nice, but build quality wise and especially performance it’s a league above, tho I am still surprised what the Vega 7 could do
I tried one of these on display at Best Buy when I was there and I couldn't believe how warm the keyboard was to type on while just being on the desktop doing nothing else. I guess some people might enjoy the warmth, but typing on it was just annoyingly uncomfortable on a summer day. I cannot imagine how hot the keyboard gets while gaming considering this was just the laptop being idle.
Might be a problem of the unit on display, because i believe the keyboard being warm is caused by the chassis being a really good thermal conductor(wich is good for performance and it's really light at that) but i have the duo16 and it heats up only when under load. On turbo in summer on really heavy tasks can be uncomfortable though.
@@vornir6169 I don't know, going by this video, it just seems to get noticeably warmer on idle than other laptops. It's not unusable by any means, but its significantly warmer than any other gaming laptop keyboard I've typed on and I've tried more than a handful at this point. I wasn't even looking to buy one to begin with, just messing around with it since it was on display.
@jonathanr4160 it's because in silent mode the fans don't spin up until the cpu reaches 60 degrees. I never hear the fans in silent mode. From my personal use the keyboard is very cool under normal use and silent mode. The actual problem is the base of the laptop which gets too hot to use on your lap. I've made a custom profile to fix this with an app called g-helper.
The RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 model die is big as you said so they can't really add 2 memory sticks I guess. Razer Blade 14 only goes up to a 4070. So that's a tradeoff.
Definitely gonna wait to see how the msi stealth 14 and razer blade 14 stack up. While the dual memory slots isn't a deal breaker since the G14 has 16gb on board it's still kinda sad they didn't follow in their foot steps. I would like to see the 4070 and 4080 version of G14 since the Blade 14 is once again more expensive than last years model. Plus I hear the 140w tdp is actually a lie. So I'll be waiting to hear you confirm that or not.
You might want to check yoga pro 9i 14 too. It has the same price point with the g14 in my country but it comes with 32gb ram and a mini led screen, you can spec it up to 4070. Not to mention it has noticably better build quality too
4080 is a big upgrade but the scale in price is criminal. You can also throw in the Asus Zenbook Pro 14" OLED if you're looking for tiny but mighty machines
I have the 2022 version with a 6800HS + 6700S and it's going to a service repair center for the second time. First time the screen was flickering, they fixed it by replacing the panel. Now the laptop is freezing up / bluescreening twice a week. Hopefully the will fix it again but who knows for how long. If you want a reliable gaming laptop which you can bring to school, I would stay away because of my bad experiences. So much time wasted troubleshooting, reinstalling drivers and Windows...
For some reason my 2020 G14 4900HS RTX2060 recently started having trouble booting/rebooting normally without encountering the blue screen. No idea if it's Window's problem or hardware. Otherwise it has been serving me well but now it's forcing me to have to consider a replacement or at least a backup Windows laptop.
Agreed the QC is horrible. I had your same exact model and the wifi would disconnect anytime I connected anything to any of its USB ports, sent it to ASUS took two months to repair. After it was shipped back, it came back exactly how it left, and the repair document stated that they changed the battery? Went into the trash bin along it’s 2021 brother.
Its not a reliable laptop! Absolute waste of money and time. I have a dead G14 with the same motherboard issue I am facing since 2021. Its has serious issues with its hardware components. I wish ASUS acknowledges these problems.
My Asus Rog Zephyrus G14 RTX 3060 Ryzen 7 5800hs version still going strong, so no need for an upgrade anytime soon, runs everything fast and smooth even at 2k since i have an external monitor
I had such a bad experience with the QC on the 2021-2022 models that I am not touching that thing with a 9ft stick. I wish reviewers would cover QC issues across mid-term usage, since they don’t really take that long to show up.
I faced the same issue on my Asus ROG G14 2021 model. Its motherboard was changed 2 times in 2 years, luckily it was under warranty. But again it stopped working and its the same issue for the THIRD time now and its out of warranty, so it will cost me as much as a new laptop to repair it. Asus should address this issue for the 2021 models. This problem seems to occur after every 6 months. I agree with you that reviewers should cover QC issues across mid-term usage, as it's a big investment for us and we don't want a dead laptop every year.
Thank god you have finally tested ryzen 7940hs. I hope you test the legion 5 slim gen 8, with ryzen 7840hs and rtx 4060. Very interesting laptop, with a lower weight and quite efficient chip and gpu.
@@user-FTRU6GJ 4060 on sales are being found at $950-1200 range, on some very good series like legion, asus tuf, lenovo loq 15/16. Yes performance from older gen sees a disappointing uplift, but if I'd be buying new right now, I'd still go for the newer cards because of its efficiency and features. But I do get it, it absolutely isnt worth upgrading from something like rtx 3060/3070 ti now.
This is my dream laptop. The 4080 model. 7940HS + 4080 - Highest performing with best performance/watt x86 laptop configuration out right now! But it doesn't come cheap.
I guess .5 point for sodium 16G so you can add another 16G to reach 32G, even on cheaper 4060 model (before mid tier only has 8G sodium limiting upgradability)
Would really like a Zenbook Pro 14 review as well. I have one and even though it's not advertised as a gaming laptop (it's par of their creator line I belive), the specs and dimensions are quite similar to a G14 4060 or 4060, but with a 600 nits OLED screen. The exterior is aluminium alloy I think, and it's very well build. Has a few advantages and some drawbacks as well, but I'd still love to see your take on it.
4:05 I actually like this, sometimes you wanna connect to a display but don't wanna charge due to lack of ability or time. This allows for that to be done efficiently on integrated graphics
Can you elaborate please because I don’t believe that any display with an internal power source would be effected by the type C charging.. and it’s two way charging meaning it will power and charge a device or a power source will charge the device. So that means your comment doesn’t make any sense or that I am not understanding correctly. Can’t think of a situation where not wanting to charge, either way, is applicable
@@Michael_Lightss first, my comment was broad and didn't apply only to type c, even if this case was type c Second, assuming every display will send power to an input device is a bad assumption. For example, my work laptop uses a type c to displayport cable. That won't carry power. Even some displayport ports on some monitors don't do power delivery But I might still want to connect to a display like those, but not have time to plug in, or a power adapter handy, or an outlet nearby. And I want to do a presentation, share my screen for a meeting, or watch a video, which would be more efficient with integrated graphics. So having the option to do so is ideal
@@Michael_Lightss There's simple Type-C to DP/HDMI cables and adapters and there's plenty of situations where user doesn't need any of dGPU power and rightfully expects to be able to drive external screen without ruining battery runtime or fans kicking for no reason. Should user battery runtime drop by 60-70% because he plugged a projector to show his PowerPoint or watch a movie? Yes, dGPUs are THAT inefficient at simply driving a screen. For example on my G14 2021 3060 uses 12W just to do drive single screen, without any apps using it. Yes, that's just dGPU die idle power consumption, whole laptop is 17.5W in that scenario. Meanwhile same screen driven from iGPU adds just ~1.5W -- practically unnoticeable and laptop can stay completely silent with passive cooling.
@@niter43 I understand this.. but what I’m saying is that if the device doesn’t need power and is not seeking a charge then the port won’t charge right? It’s only when an external device has the ability to charge that the charge is drawn. So your situation where you don’t need to charge is irrelevant because the port won’t attempt to charge or you will have an option to disable the charge and just send video signal
@@niter43 My Lenovo Slim 7 AMD Advantage does this too on discrete graphics BUT when I switch to the m680 RDNA APU, it works perfectly fine and sips power! Wish more laptops manufacturers would take advantage of this feature. For this it's a game changer
Don't now why, but my rx 6800s 2022 G14 model can pull off 75 fps on average in cyberpunk 2077 1080p high settings. 10 fps more than what jarrod measured. I am really satisfied with it!
I had the 2020 G14 in moonlight with a 2060 and it was a monster for a laptop, ended up selling it to a co-worker because i built a new desktop and didn't need it anymore.
I own the Zephyrus G14 2023 and it's a really good laptop. I'm rocking it! Probably going to do a review of it on another channel. Might be doing a separate review covering the G14 in depth.
Hey Jarrod, great review. I was wondering if you would choose this or the Zephyrus m16? I currently have the 2023 m16 with a 4080, but the battery life is a little disappointing. Best Buy currently has a 2023 G14 with a 4080 and wondering if that’s worth switching to. Thanks!
Great laptop but, as always, the big downside for me is that power socket half way up on the left-hand side, which is annoying for left-handed mouse-wielders like myself
Upgradeability is one of the biggest reason I've stayed away from ASUS laptops. The other big reason is the way they lowkey trying to prevent the users from even opening it up with way too many screw variations, even for the back cover. I remember that they even went as far as using torx screws on my ASUS Zenbook back in 2014.
@@user-FTRU6GJ exactly that, laptop's upgradeability in general is *already* limited, yet ASUS takes it further by only having a single DIMM to be available for upgrade. Plus only having *one* slot of M.2 NVME drive slot to make things worse, that's my main point. ASUS is one of the few big brands that dares enough to do that on their "gaming" laptops. Most other brands would have soldered RAMs on non-gaming marketed laptops, not "gaming" laptops where people are more likely to upgrade the insides. Let's say for example, MSI Prestige 14 which is a non-gaming laptop. 🤷♂️
had a friend who has an Asus tuf A15 2020 that had a screen flickering issue if you set the screen to 144Hz after he updated the Armory crate software, he ended up fully reinstalling his Windows and vowed to never again buy from Asus
@@hadifelanii have the duo16 and it is really upgradable... but i would have burned their headquarters if a 3.5k€ laptop had soldered ram and only one m2 slot.
@jarod The wrist rest vibration you mentioned is TRUE and in reality it's VERY irritating, even more if you put the laptop on your lap or legs, I feel the vibration all inside me, I'd do anything to get rid of it, and it's not just when playing music, even a video with speech only produce the same effect... I put a laptop cushion/pad underneath it, and I tried to play around with sound and decrease bass, but didn't reach a satisfying result. Let me know if you have any idea how we can fix this or at least alleviate it. Cheers.
Great review as usual jarrod, do you think it’s worth it to buy g14 2023 version or get the 2022 version and maxing the configuration (like get 40gb of ram and 1Tb SSD)?
As a Zephyrus user myself... The rubber feet rips and there are no spare parts, meaning every time you open the screen that part of the screen will scratch and eventually snap in two revealing the internals. Obviously the machine is a beast but that single issue is a turn off. Asus should sell screen rubber feets.
I love your videos! I was wondering if you noticed anything weird with CPU boost in the 2023 G14? I have been tweaking my 4080 G14, and have noticed something weird - there is absolutely no discernable performance drop in games when CPU boost is completely disabled. However, there is a 20+ degree drop in temps. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, but these 7940hs cpu's don't seem to be affected when CPU boost is turned off - at least in most of the games I play. I posted a video about this, but won't link to it here. Just hoping for an expert to confirm what I'm seeing.
That's the same case with my 2020 G14 with the Ryzen 9 4900HS and RTX 2060. Disabling the boost drastically lowers the temps and doesn't really affect gaming performance either.
Are you sure you didn't mix up the data for the results at 8:30? The dGPU result would be 42W for the full system. The iGPU result would be 75W for the full system.
Awesome video! I plan to buy one in few months. I am considering Asus Zephyrus g15 (2022) with 6800hs, rtx 3060 and 4k panel (there isno other configuration in my country yet, and maybe mever will be as in my country Zephyrus stock is always very limited) and I am wondering how good battery life can i get with 4k resolution compared to 1080p resolution and how does 1080p resolution actually look on 4k laptop panel. Can somebody please answer me? I look for these answers for months already.
As a professional working adult, I don't spend $1300+dollars and more on a laptop to just play a video game or two. So upgrading to 32 gigs at minimum would be a must upgrade for a mobile work laptop like the G14. With Adobe Suite and Unreal Engine Editor programs for graphic design.
Hey Jarrod, your reviews are awesome, what do you think of Acer Nitro 16/17 2023, they come with better displays and 13th gen CPU, I think they are good for around 1000 -1100.
It would be great to have a detailed comparison between two generation's iGPUs. 680M vs 780M. 780M looks close to old good GTX1060 6gb and I believe with 32gb RAM also dedicated ram for GPU can be set to 6gb. So it is already an option worth to be considered enough to play masterpieces from 2010-2015, that were way innovative than current AAA titles.
@@niebuhr6197 Still would be great to have one with Jarrod's testing methodology with wider amount of games and programs. Also, if I'm not mistaken, tests there were performed before AMD released official drivers for 780M, therefore now performance result for the 780M may be better.
Optimized mode is not meant to be anything like advanced Optimus, it’s meant to be a combination of standard mode and eco mode. While plugged in, it works the same as standard (regular Optimus). While not plugged in, it’s supposed to automatically disable the discrete gpu, just as eco mode would, giving you the best battery life. It works as intended. I have a Zephyrus m16. Try it yourself, if you guys don’t believe me. I do feel they could’ve worded it a lot better. It’s not a mux switch.
Just traded in my ROG Ally because I found an open Box G14 with this spec for $920. Looks and feels brand new. Couldn't pass it up. Planning on selling my tower to help pay for the other half as I can use it as my main and portable.
I wonder why during reviews nobody talks that this laptop does not have a fn lock. This is a significant quality of life feature for a lot of people on the go and their support just tells you to use external keyboard for a 14 incher. Huge bummer..
How does the Flow X13 compare to this (with rtx 4050 / 4060)? And also to the older ones with 6800s? Where I live the X13 with 4050 is the same price as the g14 with 6800s, is there a reason the 6800s would be preferable?
So I bought the g16, and it had fan control issues with the control center interface. It was FRYING itself. The deck got so hot you couldn’t touch it. Maybe it was just a broken product, but I took it back for the Alienware 4080. Best choice I’ve made thus far as laptops go.
Was thinking of buying this over the MSI Stealth Blade due to ergonomics and the GPU power, but the worry came when you mentioned the USB-C Ports. I have a USB-C dock for a 165hz 2k monitor and other peripherals. You said the left USB-C is the only one to have up to 100w charging, but it was also the one that works with the integrated graphics. So when docked, I am not getting the benefit of the 4060 and charging from my dock (without an additional wire from the right port)? It would be great if you can confirm as this will confirm my decision between laptops. Thanks - and great video.
It's disappointing that there isn't more focus on battery life and that the tools to determine it seem so limited. It is a laptop and it is expected to be portable and able to be used without a power outlet. How can a new gen LAPTOP be accepted to have a worse battery life than the previous generation? Whe need more tools to control the power consumption depending on use.
The major design flaw is the Wifi card location. I upgraded the drive to a WD_Black SN850X and the generated heat caused the bluetooth to simply stop working. So, midgame, the xbox controller light starts blinking, and my character stops moving and in some cases got laid out. Maybe the issue is the Realtek chip lost the silicon lottery. I want to try an Intel Wifi card, but who knows if it will solve the issue. The problem has become so bad, I am using my old laptop, and the Asus is collecting dust in the corner.
Why isn't there native function lock functionality?? I see you can get it with GHelper, but it should really be native - I'd use the mute and screen brightness buttons far more than the function keys!!
@@houssamalucad753 I thought about that, but screen response time, cooling and ather things are not as good as for gaming laptops. Maybe 14'' Legion will be that kind of model.
@@Overclocker93 actually it has a vapor chamber just like the older G14 and better than the new one, besides the screen response time is said to be pretty decent, not sure about exact numbers but reviwers said it was a fast screen. Hey, when upgrading the zephyrus series' ram (because of the soldered stick), is it better to go single or dual rank? I have a G16 with 16gb 3200 cl22 single rank soldered on. What stick should i add for the best performance? I assume just adding another stick of 16 would be a good improvement as that would make the jump to dual channel? Hey jarrod! Your reviews are awesome and full of detail! Do you think its better for me to get this laptop (if possible) or the lenovo legion 5 (2022/2023) as I need it for school/programming/gaming? Thanks!
Lenovo 16" Legion Pro 5i is on sale now at USD1250 (RTX 4060, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 240 Hz QHD IPS Display). Is it a better buy over ROG Zephyrus G14 2023 (16GB RAM, RTX 4060, 512GB SSD) at the same price ?
