At 72, I traveled by adventure motorcycle, alone, for 8 days in central Mexico.

After exploring coastal Mexico a few months ago, I was anxious to get to see more of this wonderful country. I had heard from acquaintances about the two small vibrant cities of Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende, and with some online research, I was able to reserve an BMW G650GS adventure motorcycle for an 8-day solo ride around the region.
I am sure some of my friends and family were wondering if this was wise, for a 72-year old man who speaks only basic Spanish to ride alone many miles away from tourist areas. I had envisioned riding a motorcycle through Mexico, and it was about to become a reality.
Come join me on this teaser video as I explore the two cities and I ride for 8 days deep into the Sierra Gorda mountains. More focused videos on my adventures in Mexico are in the works as well.....

I’m in my early 70s and my wife will be 70 this fall…we’ve ridden extensively in central Mexico and Baja…we’re heading to Australia for her birthday in the fall…we’ll rent two bikes and spend a month riding in the Outback…keep it up as long as you can👍

Just keep going. I'm 71 in the summer and will be travelling from the UK through France and several other countries ( about 6 in all ) and down to Albania, then looping round through North Macedonia, Serbia, Hungary, Czechia, Germany and one or two other countries on the way home. A total of about 3,500 miles and 3 weeks on the road. Looking forward to it. Enjoying watching your stuff. Like you, I'm enjoying my retirement.

In 2009 I did a 3300 mile solo motorcycle trip through Mexico on a Yamaha XT225. Now, at 68 I’m sitting in Oaxaca, Mexico State in a small town for the winter, just chomping at the bit to buy another small duel sport and do it again.

Allende looks treacherous to me. The cobblestones with the polished surfaces in the wet are killers. Does that worry you? Lisbon is like that. With trolley tracks making it worse. I love being in cities. I love riding mountain passes. I love staying in places long enough to meet people, make friends, and keep them after I leave. I took five years of Latin in school so I would pick up a language quickly but never have. I’m old and mentally lazy and everyone outside of the USA speaks English (and two other languages).

I'm 75. Been thinking about riding my r850 bmw down to Mexico. Glad I watched this video. I've been binging on watching Aussies do the outback. I'm too old for that. I think I can do slow and steady through Mexico. Cheers!! Or I should say, Salutos!!

You're living the dream my friend, and my nearest parallel is my trip last October on my humble Himalayan across to northern Spain. Completely on my own for 3,000k in two weeks. Not really a loner, but there's definitely advantages to travelling alone. I'm 70 in two months, so there's plenty of years yet. Cheers Bruce, you're inspirational. 😎

I, also, was in France and Spain on my Himalayan for 3 weeks last September and October. I'm going in July this year. Through France and on to Albania, through several countries on the way, and heading back on a different route. Hope that you've got more plans to travel on your Himalayan, pottering along on their equivalent to our 'B' roads. It's wonderful.

I really enjoyed what you shared with us, Looks like you are having a good time, enjoying the city's and countryside and that is what it is all about. I have been close with many Mexican people all my life. I can say this, Mexican Men are hard workers, they love their families, their children and their wives are always very happy, and loving especially to their neighbors and children. that says a lot. You can expect to party a lot with them and enjoy ample hospitality. You will learn that for the most part they are respectful people who want to enjoy life as much as you do. so enjoyed the church photos, inside and out. and seeing the towns, and riding along with you. I also like the music and drone footage. Thanks so much for taking us along on your adventure. I would use your name, but i do not know it. Have wonderful adventures, look forward to more of your posts.

Hi, Senior rider ! I really enjoyed your riding scenes in the central Mexico; Nostalgic villages and historic towns with heartwarming music are all amazing, and your talks are sweet. I am going to be 79 in a week but am willing to go riding on my old Vulcan 400 from Kagoshima, where I live, to Hokkaido and return in two years. Your channel encourages me, hoping no serious accident on you and wishing you a Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

I love reading about all of the 70+ yr olds still riding. I will probably film this adventure as best as I can. Peace and blessings to all.

I can definatley relate. I'm also 72. In 2010 I took a solo ride to Newfoundland from my home near Ottawa Ontario. Approx.4300 km (2700 mi). My 1st day was 1100km (700mi) It was a fantastic although my daughter was very concerned & made me promise to keep in touch daily. Unfortunately my trip was cut short due to a Hurricane heading towards Newfoundland so I made a hasty retreat. I still have dreams of doing it again.

What a fine and inspiring adventure! I have so many questions. I hope some will be answered in your other videos, but here's a couple to start: (1) What, if anything, did you need to do to secure the bike and gear at stops during the day and overnight? (2) Did you set up hotels in advance or on the fly as you arrived in towns? (3) How well did smartphone GPS work for you in the mountains and did you also have paper maps? Thanks for this content. I hope to follow you down there soon. I'm 64, but still working so have to find vacation time.

The Yamaha T7 is a great bike with lots of torque. It is top heavy though and not as easy to handle for a beginner rider as the G650GS even though they have similar weight.

I enjoy visiting Latin American countries, the culture, and nature. I only recently started to ride a motorcycle instead of only traveling by bus. It can be tricky with cobblestones, potholes, speedbumps, and traffic. After a serious accident in a round-about in Mexico in 2022, I am limiting myself to renting smaller displacement motorcycles while traveling in Mexico and working on 'situational awareness' to avoid accidents. Rules-of-the-road are much different in countries south of the U.S. border.
