Hey everyone! In today's video, I show you how to do a root touch up and root smudge (as well as subtle highlights) AT HOME! I know not everyone can afford to go to the salon, especially in-between appointments for heavy highlights, so I wanted to show you guys what I do at home to help the grow out process.
With all of that being said, although this is an "at home how to" video, if you are not confident in doing your own hair, please DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS! The sole purpose I wanted to make this video was because I know not everyone is going to go to the salon for hair color services. If you are someone who colors their hair at home, I want to give MY ADVICE on how I would approach it to make it easier for you, as well as your stylist if you do get your hair professionally colored every now and again.
Now, that is all I think I have to say! I hope this video was helpful for you guys! If you have any questions, comments, concerns or video requests, please leave those in the comment section! I love interacting with you guys! If you are new to my channel, welcome!! I hope you stick around and subscribe and I hope to see you in my next video!

Daniel Hernandez Wow, what a wonderful comment. Thank you! I'm so glad my videos have been helping you. A lot of what I learned was after hair school. Trial and error and a lot of practice and research. I always say that cosmetology school gets you your license and most of your education will be working in a salon and talking to other stylists. School is just a small stepping stone to your future! Thank you for liking this video! Make sure to subscribe if you aren't- I plan to do a lot more hair related videos :)

This was a great video. You walked everything well very efficiently. I recently dyed my roots and my whole head is bleach blonde now but i want a natural look. and my dark roots havent grown in yet. So how do I know what color to add with the toner to my roots to get a well blended mix, knowing my natural hair is very dark?

I love how you talked through this as someone who colors at home, but is also a hairstylist!My hair is dark and long......maybe right above my waist. I feel like I am FOREVER touching up my roots, so I was wondering if highlights or low light would extend my time. Also, I only do my roots.....I never run the color all the way through for the last 10 minutes like the instructions say. Why do some say to do this and others not? I'm afraid if I take it all the way through I will make the bottom darker than the top. Thank you!

Beth Hughes Thank you for seeing and appreciating that. As a hairstylist, I have my limits when doing my own hair at home, so I always want everyone to know what's realist and what might not be. Are you touching up your outgrowth to cover grey? Or is it lighter/darker than your natural hair level? That will determine whether lowlights and highlights are right for your maintenance routine. You are right in thinking that your ends will soak in the color more and be darker than your outgrowth! That is why most drugstore box dye will say to run the color through your ends for only the last 10 minutes. Because many of them are using a 20 volume developer. It's basically a "buffer" developer. Meaning it's for grey coverage as well as lifting a level or two. So it tries to cover most of the bases for everyone. But running it through the ends deposits too much and the hair goes darker. That is the main difference between box dye and going to the salon. We, hairstylist, customize everyone's color to fit them. So formulas can be very different. Even for the same look on two different people. A box color can not do that. I hope that helps. Any other questions you have, ask away!! I'm here to help 😊

I really like your technique and explanations, so thank you very much for that. It's very clear and easy to follow, with just enough explanation of what and why. I would have liked to have seen your hair when you took the highlight foils out and seen a bit more of the finished hair at the end. I couldn't really see the highlights from the camera angle. Did you lift it to a yellow and then tint? Thank you again for taking your time to post the video. It really is very helpful.

fuzzzyyellow Most of the video where I am talking is the finished hair color! The highlights were just to break up any “line” that can happen. This video was more to show the technique, and not exact formulation, as everyone’s hair will lift differently. I was toning with an 8, so the color would have been at the golden blonde stage:) Thank you for commenting! I’m glad this video was helpful:)

I really love this video! I actually think I can probably do this myself. The only thing is if you don't work in a salon, how do you get salon products? Or what would you suggest from the drugstore brands?

This helps me out a lot. I already have some blond on the bottom but would really like to go higher without using bleach. I will being ion high lifter but was not sure what to do with the top of my hair as I want to leave some root don't want the blonde all the way to the root so I don't have to do a touch up so often. Any recommendation?
@SaraWrightsmw
@SaraWrightsmw 7 лет назад
Erica Hernandez I am glad that it helped! You have to be careful using highlift color as it can leave the hair brassy and may need to be toned afterwards. As far as recommendations, I am not sure what you are wanting. Anything specific you want answered, please feel free to ask! I don't want to give you the wrong answer!

I need to color my root once a month to, when I apply the color (which is dark brown) I only touch the new roots, the problem is when I wash it, it ruins my new highlights and make them darker. It has been a huge stress for my hair having to highlight it often to keep the highlights bright. Any tips.?

Tammy Brown I tried that, it didn’t work. The last thing I tried is shampoo mixed with conditioner, it worked better but completely
