California is one of the western states dealing with a historic heat wave as at least 21 wildfires burn, forcing evacuations in parts of the state. Multiple heat records were broken over the weekend. Death Valley, one of the hottest places on Earth, hit 129 degrees on Sunday, tying the 2007 record.

Hot air provides less lift. Airplanes were grounded in Reno yesterday. According to media reports, 129 helicopters and 24 fixed-wing aircraft were lost in Iraq between the 2003 invasion and February 2009. Of these incidents, 46 have been attributed to hostile fire, such as anti-aircraft artillery and surface-to-air missiles. That means 83 Helicopters CRASHED for other reasons. Either the pilots are incompetent or the leadership then sends them up in high temperatures is. Who you betting on?

That's the way it always works. The larger fires always follow the wettest rainy season. Heavy rains results in significant plant growth. It dries out during the summer and when fires start they have more fuel and are larger.
