In an old, well kept parlor room in West Orange, not much has changed since days when Thomas Edison developed the first phonograph in 1877. Like Edison before him, Gerald Fabris, curator of the Thomas Edison Museum, often invites local musicians to record on wax cylinders on the old equipment -- a chance to hear modern recordings through the distinct tinny sound of an phonograph. For trombone player and phonograph enthusiast Bob Ferrel, of Lincoln Park, recording on a wax cylinder in Edison's original lab was the fulfillment of a childhood dream. It is certainly a real honor to record here. I have wax cylinders that I molded by my own hand on the mandrels of the 1887/1888 experimental perfected phonographs and it amazes me.

How did it happen that the recording, made on a brown-wax cylinder, was played back (3:37 to 3:40) on a black one? Black-wax cylinders, used commercially from 1901 onwards, and generally said to be unsuitable for home recording, and most modern enthusiasts use brown-wax blanks which are still being manufactured today.
