The guys talk about one of the greatest metal solos of all time, Mr. Andy LaRocque of King Diamond fame doing a guest spot on At The Gates' "Cold" off of the "Slaughter of the Soul" album. From the "Making of Slaughter of the Soul" DVD.
That whammy bar technique is really cool. It has a bit of an 80s shred-master feel to it. LaRocque also uses the technique, although much more subtle, in his solo for the Death song Trapped in a Corner.
I really appreciate, no I adore Larocque's guitar work but please, people..go ahead and listen to 'The Eye', 'Them' and also 'Conspiracy'. Larocque simply defines guitar solos there in my opinion.
Andy "the legend" LaRocque!! only metal guitarist imo on par with Randy Rhoads. I always wondered how it would've been if Ozzy got Andy to replace Randy!
I love how he says “the King Diamond fans that we were” and then talks about how he never heard that sound with the whammy bar before, which is all over King Diamond albums prior to the Cold solo. Yes, I’m calling you out!
Just to clarify: by 0:12, Fredrik Nordstrom (the producer) explained that he wasn't aware that he was that famous (implying that he is not a king diamond fan). He asked him to play because the guys on At The Gates are fans of his playing... and that is what Tomas Lindberg said on minute 1:40. PD: Eventhough Tomas said that Anders Björler can play the solo now, the reality is that he TRY to replicate it, but way slower and simpler.
I keep trying to think of how I can express how amazed I am by this. It's so good. Doesn't matter everyone knows. What a solo! Beautiful piece of music.
If anything, I think he get's better and better with each passing year, it's kinda crazy. Remember how his solo's sounded in the 80's compared to his solos in the 90's and 00's? He was insanely good then, and now his solos just sound flat out immortal.
Such an immense talent who I don't think ever got his just due. Even when he's not shredding his ass off he creates intelligently structured songs and leads. And hasn't lost an iota of his speed over the years.
i dont think the guy is saying andy invented that way of playing, hes simply just talking about the WAY andy does it and how it sounds is unlike anything hes heard before. jeff beck has done it, but it doesnt sound quite like the way andy does it since both guitarists are of two different styles anyways
Its commonly called a flutter, but Ive seen several guitarist do it. This happens to be a particularly good one though. Most the time the flutter isnt that wide so you can tell hes really whacking the hell out of it and may have only two springs in his tremolo system.
@juanchosolid Don't see what's NOT clean about Andy's playing. He's not robotically clean but he definitely gets each note out when he plays even during fast runs in songs like "Black Horsemen" or "Omens".
Actually that's a trademark Steve Vai tremelo trick. Just pull it back and lt it snap in a bouncing way multiple times like a rubber band. It can pretty much only be done on a Floyd Rose trem. Most others don't seem to have the proper bounce to them.
right at the end, they sound kinda doubtful about Andy. they said "not perfect, but [something]" and then the other dude said "kind of amazing," like as in "not totally amazing"
especially when the solo is isolated they hear that the fast run around 2:46 that it's not played very clean. he's just saying that even though the fast part is kind of sloppy, it's still a really good solo
What are you talking about? Angel Black asked about the guy sitting in the studio. Andy Larocque is not there..he was talking about the guy sitting in the middle who handles the equipment.
If interested; here is a new track produced by Andy La Rocque. Featuring Tony Martin on lead vocals. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ydwXA0EpXpc.html If you have a listen; hope you enjoy it! Cheers!
