It was a small town with a big name in the province and beyond, economically sustained by the output of its vineyards and their products. This boom in the municipality came to a sudden halt late in the 19th century, specifically in 1877. Atajate suffered the epidemic of phylloxera which devastated the vineyards in many places, causing desolation in this village. From then on, the town's history was marked by the emigration of many inhabitants and their families, due to the lack of work in the vineyards.
