🍟 ON TODAY'S MENU: Let's finish the Atari 400 video & sound upgrade, and inside out refurb! Plus, win a Hakko Desolderer! I also decided not to upgrade the RAM using the above cool upgrade. The RAM requirements for Atari 400/800/XL games are confusing, but essentially I discovered the vast majority of 800 games will run on the 400. There are a few exceptions, such as Rescue on PeriFractalus, but I don't believe in doing upgrades or removing original stock RAM and chips just for the sake of it and as I already have that game on the C64 (just as I did as a kid), I decided to preserve the Atari 400 memory "stock" :)

Thanks for watching! Paint-tastic or Pain-tful? I prefer a light spray paint to retrobriting. It takes literally 60 seconds instead of the hours, possible streaks, and mess of retrobriting, and the UV yellowing won't come back, unlike retrobriting. That said I respect all opinions and methods. There are no "wrong" ways to love and care for our retro gear. BTW I decided to leave the RAM stock as very few games need more & most Atari 800 games will work. See description for fuller explanation. Cheers!

You still need to retrobrite regardless if you are going to spray paint, or not because of the bromide in the plastics overtime can cause them to be become brittle, and break apart, I've had an old Dell bigfoot keyboard do it, along with an NES I did not retrobrite, but spray painted. So yes again retrobrite to get as much of the bromide out as you can.
@RetroRecipes
@RetroRecipes 5 лет назад
@commodorefan64 Hmm, I've been advised that the peroxide itself can make the plastic brittle though (as bleach is prone to do)

@northern lights retro gaming I feel that would be very hard to get right 😨

@@RetroRecipes So far personally I've not had that issue with peroxide, but I also mix mine with generic Oxiclean(I feel it's a bit less harsh) with the ratio being around 20% liquid peroxide, 30% Oxiclean, and rest being 50% water in a clean clear tub that has a locking clear lid, and I usually wait till it's 75F or warmer out so I don't have to leave my parts out more than around 10 hours as my backyard gets a lot of sunlight all day, and so far I've had good retrobrighting results, and no brittle plastics afterwards unless it was already brittle to start with. I'm not saying it can't happen those have just been my personal results.

The 400 was my first computer when I was 12 in 1981. I've always found its aesthetic quite beautiful in a retro-futuristic way. It makes me happy to see these machines fixed up with the respect they deserve. Cheers! 👍🏻

Excellent job on the restoration, video mod and paint job. I’ve got Bryan’s UAV boards in 5 of my Atari systems and look forward to putting them into a 7800 and a 5200 next year when he starts selling them more regularly again. I also like the paint you selected for the 400. I’ve got a badly degraded 800 that needs a coat of that stuff. Looking forward to giving it a shot after the holidays.

Setting the quality bar high & great videos has become the norm for you, Perifractic, and with this latest retro refurb entry, making its way into our living rooms for our most relaxing, stress-easing, anxiety reducing, enjoyment & captivation, having positive & strong ASMR/mindfulness session vibes with your soothing voice, makes for an easygoing delightful venture of fun vintage electronic subject material which when you combine all the above is most welcome to sit back to and watch taking in this near virtual reality uber-calm escape from a most hectic and often overbearing world. Really man, you put together some great things here the combination of which is indeed in itself a high quality ASMR mindfulness technique rendered so nicely for vintage computer/game systems fans such as myself. I totally like your videos bro and, of course have been a subscriber, commenting previously on the Atari 800 XL extreme refurb and so gave another thumbs up and even entered the contest which btw, was a nice and sweet idea to do. I can tell your a nice guy Perifractic and I'm glad i found you on youtube! Have a Merry Christmas! :D

I feel for you there! I had a terrible outcome on my last retr0briting effort. A keyboard top for my XEGS was _very_ yellow to start with. After retrobriting, it had mysterious patterns in the grey, a bit like the spangle of galanized steel but massively bigger and greyer.

Fantastic paint job! Really impressed with how closely it matches the original colour. Have a very yellowed C64 here at the moment that I was considering Retro Brighting but I have seen several videos now where the results have been less than perfect which has me leaning towards just painting it. After seeing the results you achieved my mind is made up, painting is the way to go!

Great job! The paint indeed looks very good and even throughout. I've been very hesitant to retrobright anything yet. However I'm very tempted to try the ozone+sunlight method. 13:26 Thank you for the shoutout!!! 'Rescue on PeriFractalus' indeed! Hah! You might consider getting a higher memory A8 just to play it (and many other 32kb+ games) since it is native on A8 and was ported to C64. It should be faster on A8 and takes great advantage of the custom chips. You did a great job installing the UAV in the 400, awesome. note: I'm not entirely sure you did the UAV ground point correctly (it's very optional). There is a cut point in the middle and I believe we're supposed to solder the wire to half of the pad, not both sides. This way there isn't two paths to ground, since the video signal is compared with ground for actual display. However if it's working, just leave it as it is. It looks great. Same with the +5vdc pad, very optional and the center cut point must be.... cut if used so that there aren't two +5vdc entering the UAV. :) My UAV's came with no instructions.

I had to do this for an Amiga 500 that received a similar retr0briting rash. I didn't match the color exactly, (krylon satin almond - seems a tiny bit too much red tone to it) but it really came out good. Afterwards, I put a few coats of krylon flat crystal clear to try to prevent the paint-on-the-fingers issue, and that seems to have worked perfectly.

Way back in the day, there was a give away for an Atari 400 and 800 in one of the magazines. I was convinced I was going to win one and hoped it would be the 400. That keyboard looked so cool that I was willing to give up capability just to have it. As you can imagine, I never won either. But now that I am 58, I still think that keyboard looks cool (but I would rather have the 800). We needed everything we could get in the late 70s.

Sorry that you had some bad luck with cleaning, and this can happen to all of us. The best way to think about solutions is that there is always more than one way to do things, and make them right. You needing to get paint out of the lockup reminds me of one of the many problems here in California.
@robertmiles9942

I've rescued ABS keycaps that got gray and streaky from over-retrobriting by acetone fuming. The acetone seems to reflow at a molecular level and heal the plastic surface. If you go too far though, the texture on the top will go smooth and shiny on you.

For me, there's just something about playing older systems and computers on crappy old televisions and monitors that I love. It's that time capsule feel you get, I guess. Sure, the convenience of being able to play on a modern TV is nice, but since I grew up playing on an old Curtis Mathis console TV (and later on a suuuuper crappy black and white that was given to me), part of the experience is that blurry screen and tinny sound.
@RetroRecipes

Thanks! You know, even retrobriting yellows again after a couple of years and the process has to be continually repeated. I believe this would last longer and require less regular dismantling and possible weakening of the case. 🤞🕹️

Yes I'd agree, as long as you can get a good paint match, a like new machine can result (as you have expertly demonstrated). The tricky bit is decals or painted on labels, I'm unsure what method can avoid removing / covering them? PS I didn't know of a composite mod for 400, so went for a 600xl 64k as it covers all of the Atari bases + tiny + K/B + composite + 5v 2a usb power. I do however miss the I'm so ugly I'm pretty 400 styling though :-(

Saw the restaurant and noticed it was an old Taco Bell building. Interesting. I salvaged a bunch of ICs from some old Atari 400 and 800 systems around 20+ years ago. I kept some memory and CPU cards as well. I now really wished I had kept the machines intact, but now I have spare parts I have used to repair at least one Atari 800 I bought a couple of years ago, and upgrade its RAM. What I could use is a proper shield for the cart trap door. On mine, the foam disintegrated.

I can imagine... I have a USB disk drive emulator, and it can load software at triple speed (or more, though that's not always reliable) - really makes a huge difference. XD Then again, my historical experience with the 800XL back in the day was entirely based on tapes... Even the stock floppy drive is amazingly fast compared to that. XD I have a 1050 somewhere too, but not a single suitable floppy (blank or otherwise), nor a power supply for it.

Thank you Mr Perifractic (and the lovely Ladyfractic), it's thanks to you and this video that I was encouraged and inspired enough to attempt to bring my own Atari 400 back from the dead. I bought it on eBay not long ago as working and in good condition. When it arrived, however, it had been seriously damaged in transit. The case was cracked and split in several places, bits were broken off and it was literally in pieces. Amazingly, though, it still worked! If it had not been for the fact that I'd watched this video just days before then I would probably have (reluctantly) had to return it to the seller for a full refund. As it was, I eventually managed to glue everything back together using superglue and epoxy, filled any small gaps that remained, and then sprayed it with the khaki Krylon you used here. It now looks like new and works perfectly :-) P.S. I did get half of the amount I paid for the computer refunded by the seller (my idea). I sent him some photos of it recently and he was amazed how good it looked.

I have a seriously yellow A500 that has a few cracks and structural issues, I don't really want to retrobright it. Maybe a paint job would work better too.
@RetroRecipes
@RetroRecipes 5 лет назад
I think so. At retrohax.net Pete sprays a lot of A500s. Regarding keying, I had cleaned with alcohol then washed, but if it hadn't had such a rough texture to begin with I would recommend sanding as I did with the shiny Music Maker, although interestingly the plastic paint claims you don't need to. This is because Krylon bonds (melts) to plastic like acetone, becoming one with it. 👍🕹️

I would say the Atari 8 bit computers are amongst the most under-rated and under-appreciated machines of the era. When you watch them seemingly effortlessly approximate effects that Amigas were known for, you start to appreciate how weirdly capable these little 8 bit monsters are in the hands of a capable and dedicated programmer. Unfortunately, history being what it was, while I don't doubt there were capable programmers, there were very few ones dedicated enough to get much more than the absolute basics out of the system. It's one of those systems where the simple ways of doing things often produce underwhelming results (hence why it often looked so bad next to a c64 - especially in anything involving sprites), yet you can pull tricks with more complex code that seem totally out of place on an 8 bit system. For example: Someone replicated the Amiga bouncing ball demo on one. It's got A LOT of demos of 3d rendering that run at a respectable speed. There was a prototype for a Wolfenstein style FPS engine that ran at 50 fps in 256 colours (50 FPS because PAL hardware is almost always preferred for any kind of complex graphics routine.) There's a near perfect port of a retro style PC game (OK not that impressive given what the game is - The mighty Jill-off, since it quite explicitly is designed to look like an 8 bit game. Still the system pulls it off flawlessly.) There's a pretty impressive port of Space Harrier. (granted you need an 8 megabyte cartridge for that), There's a platformer (which unfortunately requires 128k of RAM - limiting it to 130XE systems unless you've modded your atari) that, while if you know what you're looking for shows up the system's limitations, otherwise looks like it'd be at home on 16 bit system. There's a jpeg decoder that can show images in 4096 colours There's so many quirky 'custom' display modes to break the official 16 colour limitations... Not to mention that the Display list is very reminiscent of a simplified and less flexible version of the Amiga's copper list. It's sometimes called the Baby Amiga - leaving aside the age contradiction (it's older after all), there's more than a little truth to this. Leaving aside the consequences of 8 vs 16 bit systems, and older components in general, there's a lot of similarities in how the two machines work. Plus they were designed by basically the same people. - Jay Miner and his team designed both these machines, and their way of thinking certainly shines through in both. Just because one has an Atari label, and one a Commodore one, doesn't really change the reality - these are clearly relatives of one another. The branding is an inconsequential side issue. (especially once you consider the history of the Amiga itself, and how close it came to being the Atari 1650)

So far, I've only had good results when retr0briting old computers and consoles and my setup is very 'ghetto' at best, so it was disappointing to see the problem you had with the Atari. However, the paint job looks superb, so pleased to see it all turned out well in the end. I've seen other RU-vidrs who've painted their kit finish the job with clearcoat - is that something you've considered, just to protect the finish a little further? (N.B. To echo another commenter, your intro/ background music is very catchy, after watching your videos, I find it tends to play in my head at various intervals for a few days afterwards!) Anyway, keep up the great work!

When I'm doing something similar to this and I get those variations of color, it's time to match the color and break out the rattle can! But I prefer Plasti-Dip in the spray can. As it dries it will shrink ever so slightly and any texture or detail will pop right back out. I also use it to prime soft plastic miniature soldiers so the paint won't flake off later. And use it to paint those clear pads on the bottom and they'll look exactly like the originals.

Very good color match! I have retrobrighted stuff in the past with success, no spots, smears or various levels of discoloration (except once) - but it did not last very long. Most of my stuff's getting yellow again in less than two years. Yet, I'm still hesitant to use spray colors since I have no idea what the long term effect on such an old plastic will be. I do not want it to smell, I fear it will eat on the plastic or start peeling later on.

No smell after 2 days. Paint is actually a protector, whereas peroxide makes plastic brittle. Good luck whatever option you choose. 👍🕹️

Thanks, good to know. I only envy you the wide range of spray colors you can choose from. It's much harder to find a good match, let alone a spray that will not melt the plastic in the process, where I'm from. Or I'm just blind from all that peroxide, which is also a possibility :D

1. When people do their everyday work, a foot is way more useful to measure most things than a meter. A meter is way too large for most measurements people need to do. Decimeter is rarely used and is imprecise for daily use. Centimeter itself is too small for most measurements, and the numbers get out of control when using it for everyday things. 2. Base-10 conversions are great when doing math on paper, but in everyday tasks, doing things visually, it's way more natural to take half of something, or double something, than it is to divide or multiply by 10. 3. Do you live in the UK? Do you measure your weight in "stone"? If so, you can kindly take your complaints about stupid measurements and direct them right back at yourself. I'm an American, I like metric, but I'm tired of people whining about how imperial measurements are so bad. (And seriously, stone is the dumbest measurement there is.)
@fuzzywzhe
@fuzzywzhe 5 лет назад
The metric system is used almost exclusively in engineering and it's easy to learn. There's no reason to move to the SI units for everyday use. A yard is about a meter, 2 lbs is about a kg, an inch is about 2.5 cm, a liter is about a quart. These are exact figures, but good enough for back of the napkin calculations which are generally good enough period for almost anything being done outside of an engineering context.
