Atari 50 Getting an EXPANDED EDITION in October 2024 

They're doing both, so those who got in early can upgrade and those who never picked it up can get the new bundle.

This one replaces the old and people with the original can upgrade. Would love Stern arcade in there and they get Activision/Imagic in there.

I disagree a bit, but get what you are saying. If it is only dlc, it will be download only and with the Switch being the console I got it on, I would much rather have it on a cart without the internet check every time I open the game.

@@Lynxan I saw that there is a new phisical release so the new content might be included in the cartridge.

I hope so too. When I heard that in the Llamasoft Collection they used Jag ports of the ST games, my heart cried... Could DE not handle ST emulation?

I’m still trying to figure out what the Atari 50 is. I was under the impression it was just a bloated collection of ten cartridges that cost $1000.

I sincerely hope that the lack of Atari St games is more about some kind of Licensing matter, and therefore hopefully they get their ducks in a row such that they can release a single Atari St package as DLC

This expanded edition does not have an Xbox release. Just PS5 and Switch, but there is a steel book edition for the Switch only. Also I read that for those of us that bought the original Atari 50 will get all of this stuff in a DLC later this year. I’m guessing this will be a paid DLC because of how much content there is.

No? What was the problem? I purchased through Steam and it's run flawlessly on Win11 for me. Hope you get it hammered out.

@@GenXGrownUp Nope. The game would load, but when it tried to do the timeline graphic, it hung, and wouldn't go any further. Tried reinstalling three times, and then tried on another machine, and it did the same thing. Bother are Windows 11. That was quite a while ago, a year, I think. I might try once more, but not holding out much hope.

Oh, I've gotta think that 2600 Berzerk is included.

​@@GenXGrownUpThe vector wiggle on Vector games and sound errors on other games (Easily noticable on Centipede, seems to affect only some Pixel-based games). Granted, from what I can tell the vector wiggle is a stylistic choice; on real arcade hardware vectors aren't going to be drawn in the exact same place every time due to physics, but that was offset by how bright the vectors were, not to mention the vectors would be a offset by an amount that was a fraction of the distance between 2 pixels, even on a 1080p LCD display. On an LCD display where whole pixels have to be changed to present the effect, it makes the machine look like it's on its last leg, and I found it almost nauseating. While it may not be a bug, I think it still counts as an issue since it makes fast paced games (like Tempest) difficult to play. Though for the sound issue, a lot of the pitches were off on a variety of arcade games. The easiest example I can point to is Centipede, where the pitch of firing is an octave higher than original hardware, yet everything else sounds correct. This might be an issue specific to my computer since I play the collection on Steam, and I know emulation can vary from system to system. I did compare the emulation of these games to how they played on Atari Vault / Classics Collection, where they played comprably to Arcade Hardware on both PC and Switch. I haven't let Digital Eclipse know directly (I'm not sure how to), but I did make mention of these things on my Steam Review.

​ @GenXGrownUp The issues I have are Vector Wiggle and Sound Issues. I believe the Vectors moving slightly constantly is a stylistic choice meant to replicate a vector gun imperfectly drawing a frame (due to physics), but its implementation where the vectors are offset left and right by a pixel or 2 constantly (which is more than what a vector gun would be offset by) makes some games (notably Tempest) feel nauseous to play, and it makes me feel like I'm playing a cabinet on its last legs. The sound issue is more tangible; in some games (notably only raster display games), some (and only some) sound effects are pitched incorrectly. An easy example is Centipede, where the firing sound is pitched an octave up from everything else. Granted, this might be because I'm playing on PC, and I know emulation can be funky between different PC architectures, but it's still an issue regardless. My baseline for comparison is the Atari Vault / Atari Classic Collection on PC and Switch, where those games are fairly accurate to their arcade counterparts. I haven't let Digital Eclipse know about the issues directly (I don't know how to report issues / don't have a direct contact to them), but I did mention these issues (plus some other opinions about the collection, but those aren't emulation issues) on my Steam review.

Those are both Activision titles, and unless something changes between now and then, they don't have the rights to redistribute their games.

Microsoft should include them in their game pass core.

No cartridges -- all software. Do you have some information that suggests that failure rate of physical media?

What would you consider reasonable? I'm thinking in the $9-or-less range is where the DLC will fall.

What sorts of games were you hoping for? If it's stuff from other publishers like Activision, then there was no reason to expect they'd be here since Atari doesn't own the rights to distribute those games. (Yet?)

@@GenXGrownUp All they have to do is call up Activision and ask for a one-time use of those games to add it to Atari 50. If they say "no" just buy the games from them (Atari is buying up everything anyway, right?) They also need to buy back Battlezone, then we could get the Arcade and the 2600 versions on there. Every time some Atari compilation comes out, we get 2600 Desert Falcon. Have you ever played 7800 Desert Falcon? If not, you owe it to yourself to play it because the game is TONS better on the 7800, but we never get it. I believe Atari owns Karateka now, so how about 7800 Karateka? Atari owns Berzerk now, how about Arcade Berzerk, Arcade Frenzy, and the 2600 Berzerk update with the added voices. Pinball Fantasies needs to be in the Jaguar library. I could sit here all night and name off games that we need to get on Atari 50 because they are not on there yet. I think I also answered this question in a previous comment about what I wanted to see on Atari 50 when the update that added Maze Craze came out because it was such a weak, lazy update that was a yawn fest. Atari can do so much better.
