I always loved the 7800. I got my first 7800 from a pawn shop in Somerset and had someone fix the buttons on it. I played the heck out of Crystal Castles on it. I wish I had Crystal Quest.

The Atari 7800 was a better machine than the NES, and its legacy is a fine classic game library. 7800 Asteroids and Xevious ALONE are worth the purchase of a vintage system. DK and DK Jr, Ms. Pac Man, Robotron, and many others are just more of a good reason to be a fan of this system. AtariAge Astro Blaster and Frenzy are also favorites of mine for the 7800.

Thanks for the video. It's easy to see the love you have for this console. I feel the same. Interesting to hear that the 7800 had more interest then the original Nintendo at the 1984 pre screenings in New York and California. The Lesson here is to never let your competition get a 2 year jump on you. By the time the 7800 was released Nintendo had the video game market!!

Neat! I love the huge rainbow stripe. I had no idea Asteroids was built into the pal system. Very cool! Yea I am jealous you guys got the dpad controller. They aren't common over here at all. I can see why they gave us the joystick though.. I recall when I first got my Nintendo my family was making fun of it for not having a joystick. Ma thought it was the strangest thing to use your thumb and at first wished it was an Atari joystick. Of course she got use to the dpad and loved Dr. Mario.. but it gave me insight to the state of mind of consumers who were use to joysticks.

It is also known that Nintendo Japan made Atari and offer to have them release their consoles in North America. Atari said "NO" thinking that the new Kids on the video game block had no chance to de-thrown the Leader. But as we can see that was a bad decision for it was Nintendo that sank the Atari ship. The offer was like 10 Million...just think of the profits that was to be had!!! In an Alternate Dimension there is The Atari Entertainment System (AES) with Atari Super Mario Bros and Atari Legend of Zelda.

It's a little bit more complicated than that, I've talked about it in some other videos. One of the main issues was the profits, Nintendo's offer to Atari would have seen them make pretty much nothing on the hardware and only a very small amount on software they didn't make themselves. They already had the 7800 in the wings that was more powerful and had MUCH more profit potential too.

Over in the United States, in the late 80's, all the cool kids had a Nintendo Entertainment System along with a subscription to the Nintendo Fun Club newsletter (soon to become Nintendo Power) and they were playing Castlevania and Super Mario II and Contra and this is all everyone ever talked about in the school lunchroom. Everyone's kinda goofy but still accepted cousin is the one who had the Sega Master System with its Space Harrier and its Rastan and its (arguably) superior 2-player port of Double Dragon. Every once in a while the Nintendo kids would give the Sega kid some shit every now and then but that was the end of it. Then there was the weird family down the street, you know the one. They never talked to anyone and nobody talked to them. They always stopped playing and just stared at you and your friends as you rode by on your bmx bikes. These were always the ones with the 7800.

In the UK that weird family owned an NES! :-P

Honestly, that was a big problem I think. The games people were really intrigued by were coming from Japan... the platformers and whatnot. And here Atari was pumping out better versions of their old games people wanted something new

I remember playing on Will's back in the day, especially Winter Games and that two-player version of Asteroids, was a good console. What happened to Will? You still speak to him?

No idea, I saw his sister Kate at my own sisters wedding - but that was about 17 years ago now. I remember her saying something about him going up north somewhere and being a DJ but I was quite drunk at the time so my memory of the conversation is pretty vague. I looked for him a few times on Facebook but never found him.

In the 80s, there was a brief period where cops would shoot anyone holding anything remotely resembling a gun, from Transformers Megatron Walther P38 through well, anything. So the US release of the XE had a garish red color. This did away with the whole "He's got a gun!" thing entirely, except not.

The NES went from not-realistic-gray to very-80s-garish-neon-orange-puke too. :/

I like how you pointed out that nintendo did get annoyed once atari brought some of nintendo games on their atari 7800,so atari could just use nintendo’s ip’s against them, hahaaa🤣 Btw am definitely will get an atari 7800 because it’s just looks cool and it does have many nintendo ip games for it,why i didn’t realized this before, that’s pretty sad.

Just keep in mind a few things, 1. Not all 2600 carts fit all models of 7800, some IMagic for example have a hard time and later Tigervision carts don't fit at all due to how the cartridge slot was designed. Also on some model 7800's have a insanely tight cart slot so even Atari made carts fit very tightly (my first 7800 was one such model) 2. 7800's use a special power adapter. So it's a pain to replace Also some later 7800's were poorly made, my first one had some of the connecting plastic poles inside snap. But my second one seems better made. This isn't a issue unless you have to open it up as eventually the power and pause buttons may need replacement. Also a few 2600 games won't play right due to a lack of a black and white switch. A few games like Secret quest, ghost manor and Starmaster used the switch as a extra button, you can use the pause button but since it's not a switch it may not work right. Also if you don't mind repros, Atari Age has a service where they will create repros of more expensive 7800 games for you. You just submit the ROM and label art and they will make you a copy of the game.

I had to send away to Europe to get that game pad. I hate the US ones. I have a concerto Cart. It's tough to use.

I ended up going with the Seagull78 adapter to use Sega controllers. The Sega controllers work without the adapter but only for 1 button games. For 2 buttons games either need the adapter or the Europad.

Atari were very good at self sabotage it seems …. They kept making poor decisions.
