Episode 58 - A couple of months ago, a viewer requested a read-through of a magazine from the "Atari days", so here we go. Atari Age was a first-party magazine sent out to members of the Atari Club, which cost only $1 per year to join! There were a total of 11 bimonthly issues published between May/June of 1982 and March/April of 1984, after which time the magazine folded. Some great games are covered in these issues, including Space Invaders, Asteroids, Defender, Millipede, and more. I had a ton of fun making this episode, and would like to do move videos from this era if there is sufficient interest.
This read-through was not sponsored, and I have no immediate plans to recruit new sponsorship. If you'd like to help the show, you can either "join" the channel, which will make a small monthly contribution, or you can buy stickers using the link at the top of the description.
Also be sure to check out my other channel, where I do live streams, nostalgic musings about childhood in the 80's, and even the occasional collection video. / cgqplus

All video game footage featured on Classic Gaming Quarterly is recorded from actual game hardware, unless otherwise noted. As of episode 35, it is recorded in RGB using an XRGB Mini Framemeister and an Elgato Game Capture HD, or an OSSC and a Startech USB 3.0 capture device. Prior to that, it was recorded in s-video using am RGB to s-video encoder and a DVD recorder. All videos are edited on a Mac using Final Cut Pro X.
Most box art featured in CGQ videos comes from The Cover Project (www.thecoverproject.net). Check them out for all of your video game insert needs. Did any of you guys have an Atari back in the day? If not, do you have one now? What are your favorite games for the system? After doing this episode, I would definitely count Stargate among my favorites, along with Space Invaders, the two Pitfalls, Enduro, and a few more.

34 years old. Only experience with these games was playing some at the laundromat when I was a kid. After your video reviewing this magazine I finally understand some of the hype that gamers of the Atari generation must have felt back in the day and why they still have nostalgia for Atari today. It was the comic book style art, colorful cabinets, cool contests, and fast arcade gameplay. Of course, the console didn’t have the same power but your presentation made it easy for me to be absorbed in the Atari culture. It’s pretty cool.

One thing i absolutely love of this channel is not only how useful it is, but most importantly the fact that there isn't any kind of sensationalism nor autistic outbursts just to please the "memefags". Please keep on using your objective style and whenever you do use subjectivity keep on doing so with rationalism, just like you're doing until now.

By far the best memory I have of the Atari Age magazine was when my brother and I ordered Atari key chains through them. I ordered an Atari one, and my brother ordered a Berzerk one. Well, they screwed up the ordered and sent him a copy of Berzerk for the VCS instead of the key chain. The difference in price was like $2.99 for the key chain, and $49.99 for the game cartridge IIRC. We really wanted the game too, so this was an awesome mistake on their part. :)

IIRC, the 1983 crash was the major reason Nintendo implemented the licensing model when they brought the Famicom to America as the NES- they didn't want the market flooded with low-quality software, and whether it's a fair view or not (as you mention, a lot of the best games for the 2600 were third-party titles, especially from Activision and Imagic) that was one of the things people blamed when the market collapsed. In Japan, Nintendo was a lot less restrictive... and ironically, there were a ton of lousy third-party Famicom games there which I've only recently discovered via emulation and YT videos. 😝

Whilst I didn't grow up with an Atari (I'm 32), I do have an Atari 7800 now along with a Jaguar and Lynx and thoroughly enjoy those systems. The great thing about the 7800 is the 2600 backwards compatibility and it has allowed me to explore the VCS library with ease - I really do quite enjoy some of those early games from that era (inclusive of Atari and Colecovision) but I particularly love Yar's Revenge, Galaxians, Keystone Kapers, Pitfall, Ms. Pacman and Centipede. Great video. Oh, and congratulations on 100,000 subscribers!

I had Crystal Castles for the 2600. At the time I hadn't purchased an Atari game for a few years after I got my first 6 games when I picked up the system around 1982 I think. I got that game and then later Mario Brothers which kind of rekindled my interest in the system. The NES was out then and I was feeling like I had a pretty primitive system but those two games were pretty fun. The old mail in deals whether it was for action figures or in this case Atari are collection gold these days. I did it a few times for Transformers related things. Did you ever do the mail order offers Chris? If so, which ones? Did you ever see the old mail in order patches you could get for certain Atari 2600 Activision games like Plaque Attack?
@CGQuarterly

Yeah, I have one of those Activision patches. For Megamania, I think. Only video game I ever mail ordered was NHL 98 or 99 (forgot which).

Gotta love CGQ's presentation. It really feels like you're right there with him. The camera angles are a good part of that, but I think it has a lot to do with his voice, in a broader sense of the word. Kind of a throwback to radio show hosts like Casey Kasem and Dick Clark. It feels like he's talking to you and only you in a tailor-made broadcast when in reality, of course, he's talking to a pretty wide audience base. There's a bit of an art to that.

I got Space Invaders in the first year of it's release, the pack-in for the system was still Combat. Pretty sure it wasn't the pack-in game until about 2 years after the initial release. Also, when I got my Atari in 1981, besides Combat, I got Space Invaders, Maze Craze, Superman and Adventure. (Pretty sure Asteroids was the 5h game I got.) With only 5 cartridges to play, believe me, my friends and I played plenty of Maze Craze- you are right, the 2 player component is what made it really fun. Especially when you set it to two players, capture the squares (robbers) and fully invisible maze. Oh, the good times we had. Also, I don't know how I'd feel about Superman today, but as a kid, I really enjoyed the game and think it doesn't deserve the bad reviews it often gets today. If you asked me in early 1983, I would have said my favorites were Adventure, Pitfall, Enduro and Demon Attack A little different now, because games like H.E.R.O. and Pitfall 2 are clearly superior games, but I was not aware of either of those games on the 2600 until the early 90s. Most gamers had moved on to the Atari 800 or Commodore 64 by the time those games came along. Also I used to play arcade Space Duel at the Roller Rink back in 1985, right again, the two player component made it really fun and for some odd reason that particular machine was only a nickel to play, Never heard of an arcade game back then that was less than a quarter, but for some reason it was.

I got a complete set of Atari Age in the past few weeks for only $40. This replaces the set I had as a kid when they first came out which got stolen from me and ignorantly thrown out. Qotile is pronounced "kotile." Check the commercials. I don't adjust for inflation. I adjust for depreciation. ARC is just pronounced "ark."

I got an Atari 2600 on Christmas 1979...I think. It was supposed to be a gift for me and my sister but she quickly lost interest and it ended up in my room. Before that, I walked over a mile to K-Mart as a child (7 years old) to play with the kiosk and because my mom wasn't there I never had to give up the controller. I probably needed a little more supervision as a child. IMO, the best peripheral of all time was the Supercharger that boosted the RAM and the games were loaded via cassette tape. It made the Atari 2600 interesting and playable well after the boat had sunk.

These are the sort of computer and console games which were available in my teens. No wonder I never got into gaming till much later. Fortunately, I had a band and other interests, like books, so I never even considered gaming as a hobby. I was in my thirties by the time games really grabbed my attention. I'd bought a Mega Drive in 1992, which was light years ahead of these Atari games, but even that mostly featured platformers, clunky sports titles, shooters and simplistic driving games. I think I'd rather have watched episodes of the worst ever sitcoms for hours on end than try to play these abominations.

Firefox is perhaps simultaneously the closest thing to Sci-Fi AND the closest thing to a 007 Bond film that Clint Eastwood has ever done. Really a weird movie to watch today, but it shows his willingness to branch out beyond the typical cop/cowboy/tough guy film he was always regarded for back at that time. He portrays a pilot who gets smuggled into a foreign airfield to steal a futuristic aircraft for the United States. Fun movie, but weird. And with that said, I would be willing to bet the game isn’t as good as the movie.
