This nice old software (1990) can cover most of the needings when editing midi files yet.
We can load or edit from scratch midi files and we can use any external midi device to play and record.
There have been some changes from the date I uploaded the video. The download page you see in the video does not longer exist, so I've added new links where you can get the same emulator I use in the video (Steem SSE 3.8.2.) and an updated version if you're using Windows10 (Steem SSE 3.9.4.)

Hi, I have some old .son files for ATARI, and would like to finish the songs ! ( after almost 30 years :) can I install this and open and save maybe the .son files, or be able to edit them in this program ? even in win 10 ?

Yes, of course, you could use one Atari emulator like this, or even you could get some later version like Cubase SX 3.0 that could run directly on Windows and can still open old format files like ALL, ARR...

@@vanselm66 Thanks for this post. I still have an Atari, I used a MAC LC III in college and had VST 24 for PC. When I bought SL1 (cut down of SX 1) I could still access all of my old projects. Upon release of Cubase 4 there was no longer support for old formats. My version of SL1 is still on my dongle, but won't work and there is a page about this... helpcenter.steinberg.de/hc/en-us/articles/206335684-Serial-numbers-and-installation-codes-for-older-Nuendo-Cubase-and-HALion-versions However, if you have a current full Pro Licence, Steinberg have allowed current users to download and use SX3 (the last version that was fully backwards compatible to 1989 files) See more here... helpcenter.steinberg.de/hc/en-us/articles/115000075750-Converting-Cubase-VST-songs-ALL-ARR-into-CPR-format I will be getting steam though, as I would love to run the IPS from my old ATARI days on my PC. :-)

Hello, is it possible if i install it like you in the cool video on my older xp machine incl. a floppy drive that i write directly on an internal floppy drive and can load it in my original atari st 1040? I prepared hd floppys into dd by formating in the correct format that can read by dos and atari machines.

Hello. I suppose it should work but the best way to know is to try it. The first time I tried this system I had a computer with a floppy drive too and I could recover many songs from the old floppys to my C drive. Sometimes it's not an easy, direct process and probably you'll have to do some experiments. There is some information scattered in the comments.

I noticed that at 0:54 you clicked on tos162.uk.rom and not tos162.uk.img. Is there a reason for that? I have Mega st2 files. It actually still works but I'm getting my songs off of it. I'm not sure how much longer it's going to work. Just one more question, I bought a floppy disk drive that I inserted my floppy with my Atari files and Windows 10 will not recognize them, so I can't transfer them to my windows machine. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thank you!
@vanselm66

You can try different roms, in this case tos162uk.rom worked fine for me with Cubase. The question about recovering old floppy disk; I remember I could recover my original Atari floppies using the attached floppy drive and reading/coping them from the emulator with an old Atari utility. I read somewhere that usb flopy drives don't work as expected. Maybe this can help you archive.codeplex.com/?p=strecover

Dear Sir greetings from Vancouver Island Canada I have an Atari Mega ST2 with a lot of old tracks on. I would like to transfer these tracks to Cubase Pro11 on a windows 10 computer May I ask is it possible to sync up to enable the transfer track from the Atari to the Cubase track allowing me to use the latest sounds on Cubase Pro11 and remix in there. I look forward to your help in this Many Thanks Kevin Wilson
@vanselm66
@vanselm66 2 года назад
Kind greetings Kevin. If your old tracks (ALL, ARR...) are already separated files that you can move and copy in Windows, you could use a intermediate Cubase version (SX 3.0, you can find it around there) to import those tracks and then export them into a newer format, so you could work with them using the latest Cubase versions. Anyway, this trick is not so simple, maybe you have to run this SX 3.0 using compatibility mode or using older Windows versions. Regards.

The version I use is the same that you can see in the video (SSE.3.8.2.Win.32). The Win.64 version gave some problems. Midi ports work quite well, at least with my configuration (these are the only ports I could use anyway, no other midi interface at all), and plugged in my old Yamaha synthesizer (using an USB to midi adapter) and an android phone to complete the tests.

After installing the emulator, in the 3rd step, you have the option to select any PC folder as a ST Hard Drive (59"), where you can have your ARR files or put them there later. As you can see, at the minute 4th (04':00") I save the midi file I've just created in drive C (the folder I selected before). You can create more Hard Drives later from the Steem Settings. Hi! I wonder what is the idea about this video. I was drawn here because I used to work with the old Atari 1040st with Cubase 2.0. I still have loads of old arrangements made on that set up, on floppy discs and I'm looking for a way to transfer these midi-arrangements to PC. These days I'm working on Cubase Pro 9. I know there's a way to sync Cubase 9 on my PC with my old Atari (I still have one!), using midi clock and then copying the parts one by one through midi in real time. It works, but it's very time consuming. Would there be another way, using a standalone USB floppy station and a special conversion program?
@vanselm66
@vanselm66 7 лет назад
I had to do the same some years ago, recover all my old cubase songs (".ALL" extension), and copy them to the actual machines and OS. Amazingly, there is some software that can help us to read old floppy disks, and then, with the help of the emulator we could save those files as standard midi files. I tried another methods too, like syncing my workstation to my computer and do some kind of live recording.

An easy way to convert the old .all files to .cpr files that you can use in modern version of cubase is by using Cubase Sx3. Here is a link to Steinbergs info on it, as well as download links. www.steinberg.net/nc/en/support/knowledgebase_new/show_details/kb_show/how-to-convert-all-and-arr-files-into-the-current-project-format-cpr.html Worked like a charm for me, and it was a blast listening to things I had long since forgotten about.
