ATB’s debut track under the name, ‘9 PM (Till I Come)’, is one of dance music’s most recognisable anthems, featuring an infectious melody that changed the German DJ and producer’s life.
In the latest episode of The Making Of, we join ATB, real name Andre Tanneberger, almost 30 years later as he reveals that he made ‘9 PM’ by chance after showing a date to his studio before going to the cinema.
The track, which was made in just two days and features a sample from Yolanda Rivera, went immediately to No.1 when it was released in the UK in 1998.
ATB also talks about his first ToTP appearance, the track’s confusing music video, and how it was more recently the inspiration for Peggy Gou’s ‘NaNaNa’.

When 9pm was released I was a teenager (12-13 years old). ATB was one of the reasons I started to like Dance Music and want to create my own tracks. As we fans used to say: ATB = Always The Best! Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷

At the starting of my DJ career my biggest goal was to play at a club called Rote Sonne here in Munich, and once the day came where I played there, I closed my set with that track. 9PM is a magical song ! Absolutely timeless. What a great interview by the way !

fake performances are when they go on tv show, it was normal on tv do fake performances because its just for camera, but performers always hated to be forced to fake it.

Year 1998 , 7 years old me , first time hearing a trance song on TV. At that time it was realy hard to hear world-wide electronic music in Bosnia. We had one Serbian channel who provided us a foreign music hits. Since the day i heared 9pm for the first time, till now , that song is magical for me. Later on i was listening ATB a lot , he made a lot of classic dance hits + his live performance is realy something special. ATB formed my musical taste and love for the trance music 4ever! Thank You ATB!

This video surprised me. Thank you for sharing this story guys! 9PM (Till I Come) reminds me of my childhood and it was from the first tracks which made love Trance and I had included in my first mixes when I was 15. What a beautiful tale behind this legendary track. Andre is extremely talented. I am listening for years various of his works. I feel blessed I experienced this track in the right era. And of course there are many more tracks which showing his talents. One of them is the Renegade with Heather Nova. Both the original mix and his remix as A&T. Emotional stuff.

The vocals on 9PM came from the acapella of Ricky Rich and Julio Posadas - The Way You Make Me Feel, sung by Julio’s ex girlfriend Yolanda Rivera. ATB was denounced by Julio for copyright and now he owns the 50% of the rights of the track.

I remember when it was first released on MoS’s new Data Records vinyl-only off shoot in the UK, in March 1999. It charted at #68, which was impressive for just a 12” sales at the time. Due to there being no CD Single, people started buying the German and Australian import CD Singles, so it charted a couple of separate times in the UK Top 75 in May/June. MoS then released it on their Sound Of Ministry main label in July, which then charted straight in at #1. The vocal is by Spanish model Yolanda Riviera, lifted from a TV appearance she’d made earlier in the year. He seems like a genuinely decent guy, respect Andre! Great video DJ Mag!

Jude Jules played it on the Radio 1 just before it came out, when he would do his half hour mix at the end of the show. I will Never forget it, one hour before i drop a Mitsubishi lol i was bouncing around my room trying to get ready for slinky, then he mixes in 9pm It just made me Rush So So hard pure bliss. Every time i hear it, i'm taken back to that time, that moment. Later as i met all my Mates for the coach to Slinky Everyone had heard that tune, and was talking about it. Really is one of those Tunes that is Perfect.

1997 was somehow the most dangerous time of my entire life. And 1998 I was so happy to have found my way back home, I had to dance my heart out. And then, there was this bended guitar. I went absolutely crazy. 9PM is grown to an absolute monster. I am sure that this is something like the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine" or Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" in terms of influence. Thank you, André for THIS amazing song.

Early two thousand I saw him live in a club in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. One of the dancers climbed on the stage and started dancing in a very provocative way facing him. He called one of security guys and showed him his wedding ring and asked the girl to be removed from the stage. After his set he came to the dance floor to speak with his fans, and I had the privilege to speak with him for about ten minutes. Absolutely an amazing human being.

The song came out when I was at the climax of my DJ career. I performed like every 2nd night and some tracks had to be played every night over and over again, sometimes a couple of times per night. When you hear songs dozens of times each week and you are forced to play them, they usually get boring. But not this one. I still enjoy listening to it after all these years. The pitch bend is classic, it was copied hundreds of times BUT no one did it as intense and nice as ATB. Thank you for this great piece of club history…

Since 2004 have Been travelling around the World to attend many of his gigs. I ‘ve always liked 9PM, but as he also mentioned in the video: he produced countless Hits ( Hold You, Let U Go (both versions was top) You Are Not Alone , Believe in Me, Ecstasy and many more with deeper meaning and/ or storytelling, so I prefer those ones more. But of course , 9 PM is an absolute Classic , with its uniquely catchy sound deserves to be an all time classic 🎉
