Hey everyone, Ryan here from Steve's video. Thanks for all your comments and for supporting Flight Chops. Im happy to answer any questions on the Bearhawk or on the content of the video.
This one brought back memories. Back in 1980, I took my dad for a Vancouver flight in a Piper Archer. We departed from Vancouver Intl., flew to Point Grey (i.e., U.B.C.), then transited the harbour zone and flew past Simon Frasier University to "Pitt Meadows, and then headed back to YVR via Burnaby. My dad trained in fly Tiger Moths and Avro Ansons near the end of the war, so it was an extra special flight with extra special scenery.
Have to agree. ATC folks are awesome here in Canada and good to us VFR guys. Even when I burble my way through a request they are patient and understanding. Your low and over at YVR was phenomenal - what a treat! John and I got one at Hamilton in his TB20 a couple of weeks back - not quite as cool, but man are those big airport runways ever long! So to any Nav Canada guys who see this - Thank you!
Thanks Steve. I haven't been home in many many years. I started flying at the Pitt Meadows airport. I had the pleasure of growing up there and that airport was my second home.
As a former controller turned pilot, I love these videos. Very good points all the way through. I love having my instructors ask me controller questions; it's nice to break down that barrier.
The Daughter is so glamorous with those shades, and its cool how much she likes flying, and the wife is wearing Chops old sunglasses which again is really cool to see.
For sure! My wife loves the Albatross Scheydens - For this ep I was wearing the C-130 frames. I got those ones in the Polarized lenses for hanging out at airshows, but I don't fly with polarized lenses.
Love this video! Makes me feel as though I can be a lot more confortable speaking with the controller - not as scared to be completely professional the entire time. Also your daughter pointing things out was absolutely adorable :)
Controllers are human too and usually the bark is worse than the bite. Just relax, communicate clearly and be ok with needing to change your plan. Truth be told, while we got the low approach at YVR we also had to orbit for 10min to wait for a hole in the traffic. Steve's daughter almost got sick from the circling, so every request has its potential cost and downside. ;)
You have a beautiful family! Thank you so much for sharing the good times! Please don't underestimate how joyous it feels to be part of it even in a little way.
This has got to be one of the best Flight Chops videos to date. The production quality was excellent. Content was very informative. The chance to see some of the beautiful Canadian scenery in a very unique aircraft and get a low and over of YVR 08R. I had a chance to fly in FBH w/ RVH and it was one of those eye-opening aviation experiences that make you say to yourself, "I can't believe I'm doing this right now!" Top shelf boys! Keep up the great work!
Great video! " There aren't always technical words to describe what you are seeing" as an aviation English instructor/ rater this expresses the importance of having a good knowledge of general English for pilots and ATC ! Thanks for posting 😀✈️
That's my backyard! I got my PPL at ZBB and my CPL out of YVR before the landing fee was implemented. I think you can land a 150 sideways on 26R. I guess that would make it 35S LOL. Looks like you had a great time. I have not been flying for quite a while. You have inspired me to get back in the air.
Wow what an incredible flight! The lighting was gorgeous and you obviously spent a good deal of time editing that video and it showed. Thanks for putting this together and sharing with everybody what must have been a very memorable flight for you and your family.
I love the soundtrack to this video! Great as always. If you're not careful, you're going to get picked up by a TV station, and all us RU-vidrs will be out!
Great video! Such a beautiful bird as well. I teach my students not to be afraid of ATC. They are there to help you and work as a team. Ryan said it perfectly, professional but in a conversational manner.
WOW! One of the best aviation videos on RU-vid ! Steve, thank you for your amazing video which brings back all my good memories in YVR! Ryan, hope someday I may catch your Bravo Hotel with my camera!
Thats sooo cool, the little girl will enjoy this video for a loooooog time and show her friends lol! And Mr. Pilot...very nice experimental...I would feel one hundred percent secure flying with you...way to go..very cool guy!
Awesome video, I fly out of YNJ and that is one of my favorite tours over North Van, though I have never done a low and slow at YVR. I wasn't aware of the BC General Aviation Association, I will have to look them up. As always, great video FlightChops, I always look forward to your new adventures.
Containers full of Maple syrup and Beavertails going to China, Canadian humour. xD. Evelyn is just the cutest! Im so glad you all got to enjoy this magical experience.
My daughter is 5 and i love taking her with me also. We are from across the lake from you. We live south of Rochester NY. Sometimes I have to tell her I'm not going flying when i want to go for a rip by myself but she always asks then why are you taking your flight bag....
I'm working on an FAA UAS license with hopes of following through with a private pilot license in the future. Hearing from an ATC/pilot about his perspective on workload is something I would not have thought to ask. Thank you for sharing such insight.
Great video! I know for some that the communications can be difficult. When I first started flying, the communications were a little confusing; for obvious reasons like, it sounds so complicated. But when you boil it down, all it is; who you are, where you're at, and what you want or what you are doing. Keep it short, keep it sweet...no small talk. I think I was more concerned about sounding ridiculous, like the new guy that I was, lol. Once I got over that, my communications got MUCH MUCH better. I wonder if ATC is giggling at some of my landings...haha!
Such a nice video showing the two girls enjoying the flying and not being scared and fussy. Lucky you that the pilot didn't take you in the air during a rough day, maybe he picked the afternoon when the air is smooth. I know the tower on the top of the Pan Pacific hotel, I have done some work up there. Fly safe, experiment, improve, but I would inspect the ELT and carry a satellite tracker on every flight, a suggestion from an Air Search and Rescue team member
Your videos are getting better and better! Love the mix of tips, learning moments, and great flying shots. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Chris who is working on PPL flying at the beautiful Norwegian coast.
Amazing experience flying with you. Great info lead up re: 'scratch' built precision. Interesting perspective from ATC/Pilot and copilot too. Brilliant view. Amazing family experience. Evelyns's future has wings!! What a sweet craft, that Bearhawk. Thanks for the ride!

I love your videos so much!!!! They are best on RU-vid. I always look forward to the new ones because they are always different, and I get to see so many perspectives. Keep up the AMAZING work FlightChops!!!!!!!
I never knew there was a Tower up there! I'll have to put it on my bucket list to schedule a tour and watch ATC from the Canadian side. I've been controlling since 1994 and I have family that I visit in Surrey and Vancouver quite often.
Is somebody chewing gum? ha ha! I can't tell you how much I look forward to your video's. Steve, you are living a fine life! Keep up the excellent work, looking forward to the day you fly the Spitfire!
@FlightChops I FINALLY got to understand how the mics work better because of your little girl. I have always wondered about what duplex the headsets worked in and now I know. Thank her for me. :) I have never flown a plane but it has always been a dream. Love your channel.
Hey Steve +FlightChops i just suscribed to your Vlog and whatched this video, as an aviation lover and pilot in training i can not tell how jealous I am of this amazing opportunity you had to fly arrund downtown Vancouver area with such a cool controler/pilot Ryan Van Haren and your family, thanks for sharing, your earned yourself a new fan from Mexico today !!
I am so glad I watched this video, thank you so much for bringing us along. A really cool perspective and awesome scenery. You are Blessed with a beautiful Family. How special to share this flight with them. Thanks again for sharing!
I got my license in this airspace; this video brings back so many memories! Pretty awesome what you got to do at YVR, that is still on my bucket list! Thank you for these videos FlightChops ;)
Very cool.. Did you see the lumberjack show on Grouse Mtn? Family was in "Vancougar" a couple years ago and took a ride in a Beaver. That was a great video with your family. Special flight for sure.
Awesome vid! Really enjoyed it. Last night I flew from Brampton to Toronto, ATC were patient with as I'm terrible on the radio a lot of pausing:(. The ease in which Ryan spoke was enviable but I will learn from him and definitely be more determined to not limit my flying adventures cause I don't want to speak to atc. Thanks Mr Chop's and great plane Ryan.
Your videos have sparked my childhood dream, thank you! I have always wanted to fly but never taken the steps. After watching many of your videos I have decided I have to give the private pilot license a go. Keep up the awesome content!
Experimental / Homebuilt Aircraft can utilize avionics and components that are not "certified" which are a lot less expensive also the owner/pilot can to all the installation themselves. Factory built aircraft require certified parts and a licensed mechanic to complete the installation.
Really nice video. I train in a busy international airport, and im always kinda of hesitant to say much because im just a trainee and I can hear all the big airlines and the tower working, so I dont want to take too much time on the comms. But this video ilustrated the situation nicely. And, oh, do I know that feeling of neglect to VFR flights the guy was talking about. Sometimes I request touch and goes and I get sent to an nearby area for like 30 mins. Understandable considering the amount of traffic. But I like it! Good video, Mr. Chops!
Thanks for producing clips like this! This one and a few others you've made have literally brought tears to my eyes. I'm in the process of applying for immigration and dream of one day having a license. I'm completely green with envy. I did some solo consolidation at FACT (Cape Town International) a while back. Doing circuits and bumps with a Piper Tomahawk on a runway over 3km in length is a little similar to that nice runway inspection that you did here. Once again, thanks for sharing it with us.
Another great video. I love the aerial views and your daughter's fascination 'that boat's going to china?!' Keep up the great work. And I don't mind the monetization. I hope you make millions (and I'm also a Patreon supporter).
Right on thanks! And regarding the monetization; I turned it on in Jan 2017 for the first time after ~4 years, simple because I was told the algorithm favored monetized videos. I didn't expect my niche numbers to generate much ad revenue, and never liked the idea of making views sit through ads - anyway - after a couple months I can confirm the money is crap - it's been about $1 / 1000 views... so yeah, unless getting millions of views, Ad rev is not worth it. Still waiting to see if there is a significant change in the algorithm sharing - Ive been told it can take 3 months for the meta data to trickle down and start rewarding the monetized videos with being suggested more often...
Great video man. Definitely made me less afraid to talk to ATC. There's a lot of stuff that I'd like to do flying around town and I never really considered asking.
