Highly regarded in pro-audio and audiophile circles. How good are the ATC SCM19s? I compare them to the Buchardt S400s and my Proac Response 1SCs.
For more information here is a link to the manufacturers website..

That was an excellent review, but it was also much more than a review but also a very in depth discussion about every little detail of the ATC SCM19’s. Man, you’re quickly becoming one of the go to reviewers. I’m so glad to hear you’ve been talking to companies about getting review samples, which I was gonna ask you about anyway. Keep up the amazing work, Tarun! Thank you. 🎶✌️🔊🙂🎵

@@abritishaudiophile7314 Hi Tarun I would like to first commend you on producing an excellent Chanel. Since becoming a subscriber some months back I have enjoyed the various subject matter and your insightful thoughts and viewpoints expressed in the videos. I have learnt much!! It appears that you and I both also share a fondness for the ProAc Response 1SC's. It is in this context that I reach out for a welcomed opinion. I live and work in Thailand and sadly a long way from Bangkok where the vast majority of hi-Fi dealers operate from. My ProAcs were purchased a good few years back now and in that time despite loving their sound presentation, build and aesthetic I have had to replace the main drivers on two separate occasions due to the rubber compound disintegrating (possibly a consequence of living close to the ocean?? But maybe not as other speakers that I have appear not to have suffered). As you can imagine purchasing, shipping and paying import duties adds up and becomes a costly affair. The woofers are again in need of replacing and I am loathed to spend again on the ProAcs, in fact for the past several months I have reverted to using my Quad 11L's which as you will well appreciate are not comparable despite being good speakers in their respective class. With this in mind I was intrigued to watch a recent video where you spoke eloquently of the ATC SCM19's. At around this time a dealer in Bangkok was advertising the ATC SCM19's but alas due to distances and the impact of Covid I am unable to audition them. I do not ordinarily purchase hi-Fi equipment 'blind' but may have to consider doing so on this occasion but would first, if possible, obtain your input and council as to whether the ATC's would prove to be a good replacement for the ProAcs' I live in an apartment with a listening room of circa 45 Sqm in size and as such I do have to be somewhat mindful of neighbours when not using my headphone setups. My musical tastes are varied ranging from classical to primarily blues / rock, male and female vocals and listen across all formats. I particularly like to hear details and nuance within a rythmic presentation. Given my situation and circumstances would I be making a mistake in purchasing a set of the ATC SCM19's? Would you alert me to any specific issues related to the ATC's vs the ProAcs? I have listed my equipment below in order that you will get a sense of what I am used to listening to and through which may assist in any feedback you can provide. @@ExpatFinancial thank you my friend. Very much appreciated. The ATC SCM19 is the only speaker that I have reviewed to date that was technically superior to my ProAc 1SCs. What I mean by “technically superior” is more revealing with a more natural tonality. However, the difference between to two wasn’t enough to justify the change in my case. The 1SCs have a warmer, richer tonality with I like. They are also more forgiving of partnering equipment and recordings. The SCM19s need big power amps to make them sing. Fortunately, your Bryston 4BSST2 should be more than capable. Decisions, decisions 👍😊👍

That’s what I call a review Tarun! Enough from others that leave you guessing. You focus on the meat of technical information without boring your viewers into slumber. That is hard to do given the rather dry subject matter. Speakers are the final product of any system and as such must convey that system’s capabilities, hopefully in a positive way. Speakers can reveal system weaknesses like no other component. The better the end of your system, the easier it is for you to gauge your weak link or links so you can remove them and find better ones to give you a real treat, an eargasm! Lovely review! Keep it up!😊👍🏻

A refreshing reviewer worth listening to. Never mentioned the word "palpable" nor discussed tube amplification or cables etc. He just talked about how these speakers would perform and what a potential buyer must take into consideration (areas like real world bass response and lower efficiency meaning more current and costlier amplifiers). The man is worthy of endorsement by British audio manufacturers and others.

Tarun, your reviews are the most objective by far and your presentation is very clear. I purchased my SCM 19 two days before this review and I can say that your review is right on the money. I don’t have the luxury of placing the speakers 85cm from the wall and your comment on bass reinforcement is true but because the speakers are in my secondary system where I listen at low to moderate volumes, the bass energy doesn’t get to a level where it bothers me. Right now the speakers are pointing somewhere between my shoulder and ear for best imaging but the adjustment will continue after I receive my Audio-gd Balance A1 power amp. Looking forward to more reviews, guides, tweaks, etc. from you. Best

I have these in Satin Black and they are perfect for my listening room which has a nasty room mode at 54Hz that even with a couple of bass traps installed in the front corner have not eliminated it entirely that even the Kef LS50s sounded boomy at that frequency which is coincidentally the port tuning frequency of the LS50s. I partnered the ATCs with a sealed subwoofer crossed at 35Hz. Driving them with a high current, high power (220watts) integrated amp. My search for the perfect speaker for my room and to my taste is over. Great review by the way. You nailed every aspect of this speaker in terms of design, parts and most especially how they sound. Kudos Tarun.

Thanks for the review. You go over all the nitty gritty details I like to hear about, like how you need more volume to make up for the lack of bass bloom/extension. It really paints a full picture in my mind of how these sound in a way that most reviewers seem to shy away from. P.S. I auditioned the SCM7 V3 for my desktop and was hugely impressed, I even found the bass to be more than satisfactory. It was paired with a Parasound Hint 6. I ended up straying away from it because it demands a lot of power (went with much less power hungry Spendors instead). I really have been tempted to go for the 19's in my main listening area though, where I have M30.1s and 2 T7i subs. But... like you said, these babies are power hungry! And I just knew if I made the switch I'd be out amplifier shopping shortly after.

Always look forward to hearing a new review from you Tarun. Not the most interesting looking speaker in black but the Cherry looks beautiful. Heavy speaker for a stand mount. ATC are one of few speaker manufacturers that build their own drivers, along with KEF and Focal and I like that. I'm surprised that their bass doesn't go as deep as I'd expect for such a large box. Awesome review, Tarun...very detailed and concise, with a short biographical history about the company and it's founder...well done! I like your pace of speech and composer, even your sitting position in front of the speakers is spot on. These are some high quality speakers...the drivers are vastly overbuilt and that's a great thing to see...really love the graphical details and photos of the speaker design you've implemented into this review...I also admire your honesty...it's not always easy to be truthful: these speakers do roll off rather quickly in the bass region for their size and at the same time require very high quality and high power amplification to bring the best out of them, and that's not going to come cheaply...one thing though, I chuckled at the 2:20 mark because that speaker grill looks like some sexy lacy material, LOL!

Great review, Tarun. I like your new rating scheme. I also like your appraisal of the ATC's suitability as a standalone proposition, or rather their unsuitability! I spent many happy years listening to Linn Kans in a small room, which suited them really well, particularly with my LP12 as the source. Since I now have a larger listening space, I've moved to compact 3 way floor standers and I love the greater extension in the bass. I often wonder if I could go back to stand mounted speakers, but it's clear from your review that I would not be happy with these. So thanks for the steer!

A great review Tarun :) I've had the ATC SCM19V2s for over 2 years now, they blew me away from day one. I did, however, recently add a subwoofer to my setup and that has really brought an additional dimension to the sound. Everyone who have heard my ATCs (with or without the sub) have been absolutely blown away by their pure expression - I have never heard a midrange like they produce. Plus they pack a serious punch. Vocals and acoustics - I honestly think you can't get better without spending ridiculous money.

Excellent, well presented review. The one thing I would argue with is your final assessment that ATC could have made an effort to increase bass extension. That is true from an audiophile perspective but ATC probably deliberately decided to compromise on the bass in order to preserve clarity and to thus satisfy monitoring requirements.

Excellent detailed review and narrative about ATC history and production techniques. I am living with the SCM 19 daily and they are my preferred speakers now. Compared to my Proac Response 2s, they have a much more punchy, and detailed bass in my opinion. Maybe not quite as deep, but not enough for me want a subwoofer added. I suspect that the bass output from the ATC's are somewhat highly sensitive to room response and setup. By the way the placement of my speakers respect your guidelines :-) I totally agree with your findings with the ATC's need for current/power.

Thanks, excellent review! I've been using the SCM19 V2 with a NAD M32 integrated for a couple of years (streaming only) and I fully agree with your evaluation of the speaker. It's awesome. Your main critique, the lack of bass, is to some extend justified. Quality over quantity. Super fast and really good but not so deep. I added a couple of ATC C1 subwoofers and got solid extension down to 25 Hz. I even got a miniDSP to tweak the room resonances in the bass region. All together, I believe my GBP 8K system is hard to beat.

Hi SWD, I agree that you have put together a fabulous system and solved the one weakness of the SCM19s with two subwoofers. These not only extend the bass but also are a form of active bass management. I get the feeling that you already knew that. Thank you for watching and commenting 😉👍

Excellent review, Sir! I own these speakers and agree with your review 100%. I don't have experience with the other two speakers you compared these to. I can attest that I compared them to the Sonus Faber Olympica I bookshelf speakers and the ATCs were better to my ears. I found your spacing from the walls to be right where I have mine (~1m from the back wall to the face of the speaker). I have not experienced the same sensitivity to toe in that you describe, but my room is significantly larger than yours (based on my estimation). I drive my ATC SCM 19 v2's with a McIntosh MA-252 integrated. The 100w/ch will drive these to over 90db w/o clipping, but not much further. That's plenty loud for me, but others might want more power if they like things louder.

Excellent review. In my recent quest to upgrade my system, I auditioned the ATC SCM40 at my local dealer. I took with me my 30 year old British class AB 115W plus, recently manufacturer refurbished amp. The dealer was shocked by how well that old amp drove those A ATC speakers. I was impressed by the speakers. I paid £1800 for my amp 30 years ago. The amp is still in production and retails for around the same price. The dealer then swapped out my amp for the next up in the range, with a price tag of £3000! We were both shocked at how remarkably similar the amps sounded. In a blind test almost impossible to differentiate. The £3000 amp was slightly more powerful and did exert tighter control of the bass of the ATC’s! My overall feeling was that the ATC was a very impressive and revealing pair of speakers, but were power hungry and even the SCM40’s really needed a good set of subs. I auditioned them again with a pair of Rel T9I subs and the combination was phenomenal. When i did finally put my newly upgraded system together, the ATC’s were not part of the package. Although they are, in my opinion, extremely good speakers, for my listening preference they were too power hungry, lost wAy too much tonality at low volume and even at mid to high volume still required good subs to augment the low end frequencies. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone with a decent high current amp. In that price bracket, I think there a lot of good alternatives out there.

A British Audiophile my amp is currently the Rega Elicit. The dealer and I blind tested it against the Rega Aethos and Rega Osiris. I ended up purchasing the Kef R11 speakers. I was impressed with their open sound stage, good tonality at low volume and the relaxed and effortless way they reproduce music. Of course, listening at home is vastly different to listening to them in the dealers listening room. I was pleasantly surprised how low they go in my medium sized, open plan lounge. I was also surprised and the wife was happy that despite the fact that they are rear ported they perform well close to the frokt wall. I did also buy a pair of Rel T9I subs. I’m glad I didn’t buy a lesser sub. Actually it turns out the R11’s are perfectly good full range, stand alone speakers, but the T9I’s are man enough to augment the low end if required. I am thinking of upgrading my amp to something more powerful. It won’t be either of the Regas, I love the Rega sonic signature, but, I think there is better bang for your buck out there. I would to get my hands on the Hegal H590. Hegel and Kef pair well. But, that would over stretch my pocket. I’m seriously thinking about the Kinki Studio EX M1, but I’m not rushing in to anything, my old R Rega is still holding it’s own!
@abritishaudiophile7314
@abritishaudiophile7314 4 года назад
Thanks Howard. You have put together a very nice system. I am not surprised the old Elicit holds it’s own. The R11s are an 8 ohm load but according to hifi news drop down to 3.5 ohms at 17.3Khz (see lab report below). They are 90 dB efficient so you don’t need a lot of Watts to play them to reasonable levels but they would benefit with amps that have stiff power supplies and decent current capabilities. If you like the Hegel H590 but want something for less money I would considered the Hegel H390. Thank you for watching and sharing 😉👍

Hello Tarun, Thankyou for your clear and concise review of the ATC SCM19s. I suppose one would have to go for the SCM40 speakers if more base is required. I would be very interested to hear a review of Spendor speakers, also another highly rated British speaker, particularly the Spendor A4 and D7.2 speakers.., I have heard them on another RU-vid channel and they sound very impressive. Great review Tarun. I really like your presentation style and your blend of technical description and design and your assessment of the sound from each of these speakers without getting too wordy or using flowering language. I also think that it is good to compare speakers of differing designs within an approximate price point. I think that you have hit on the right formula for success with your channel and I look forward to many more of your videos. Do you intend to focus on loudspeakers or branch into other areas? I personally think you should stay with loudspeakers because they are by far the most variable aspect in audio and are the most interesting and challenging to understand because of the multiplicity of the disciplines involved, electrodynamics, enclosure designs, driver designs, crossover designs, the input interface (cables/power requirements), the output interface (speaker & listener position/dispersion/room acoustics), the human interface (looks/psychoacoustics/price). I think you have the intelligence, education and experience to handle all of these with aplomb. Best of luck with your channel.

@@abritishaudiophile7314 I don't disagree with you there, but I just think that you have the best grasp of the physics and aforementioned disciplines of anyone out there. I would find it very interesting if you decided to tackle the subject matter of speaker cables and interconnects if you so dare. It is fraught with much pseudoscience and wild claims that are not scientifically backed especially not supported by valid subjective testing. Personally I do not doubt that there are differences in cables but whether they are audible in practice is of great debate. But it is not really debated that resistance is the key property that can make an audible difference. Do you dare take the plunge into the quagmire?

In general, for the case of book shelf speakers (I avoid the abbreviation BS speakers), the mentioning of the necessary stands and their price would make the review more complete. Hi Tarun, great review. I own an ATC SCM 40 for 5 years. First it was connected with a Rega Elicit amp from 2009 although it sounds wonderfull it lacks power. I have tried several amps in the shop , Naim Supernait, Accuphase and Spec but ended up with a Leben CS600. The Spec sounded good as well but it wasn´t dynamic enough. The Supernait wasn´t a big approvement compared with the Rega. The Accuphase sounded not good with the ATC. The Leben has enough control and the bass is tight, the Leben is almost 4 years connected with my ATC. I have tried some loudspeaker cable but I find the DNM cable still the best I have tried. Have a good weekend.

Bass, the lows, of the SCM-19 is excellent rolled-off excellently done. You hear every detail in the mix, layering, note's and decay here of the bass-output. It's tight and controled in a very wel thought-out and nicely done sealed design. You need yourself to ask the question in with size rooms I'm honing to place the 19's? To except it's a sealed design. In smaller to medium size rooms it's perfect (in my honest opinion). And it's better in the long run, non-fatiguing, better rolled-off quality bass than overblurred undefined low-noise.

I've been curious about these speakers for some time and now I finally understand why they are said to be as good as say, a similar priced set of Harbeths, (Compact7 ES3), of which I am seriously considering for purchase. Oddly enough, I like the idea of owning a set of speakers that would work well with a good quality subwoofer. A Rel would fit the bill nicely as they can disappear and compliment speakers with the ability to augment the lower mid-range with what I would call, good base management. Tarun, (name spelled correctly I hope), another excellent review and comprehensive explanation of a well designed set of British loudspeakers. Gratitude young man!!!! Charles Canada

Due to be demoing the SCM19s shortly, in my 3.5m x 4.5m room. Found the SCM11 (slightly) lacking in body, but only on some music. The bass they did have, was wonderfully articulate and tight - way better than most speakers I've tried. I'm hoping that the SCM19 may be a sweet spot; a bit more bass, without being overwhelming.

@@abritishaudiophile7314 after a day of listening, I'm very impressed. They're quite different to the modern, BBC style speakers I'm used to. The most obvious one being the highs, which are slightly more crispy and explicit. Sibilance isn't too much of an issue, but it does crop up at times. Voices don't have quite the same natural body. Tonally, I think I just need to get more used to them. On the other hand, acoustic guitars sound stunning. Funk and soul tracks suit them incredibly well, with the ATC's tight bass driving the music along. Most electronica sounds great too. On the whole, I'd say the bass depth / impact (for my tastes) is just about right for my room, which is a relief. No needing to bung ports, or agonising over positioning etc on bass heavy tracks. I'm not sure they're any more 'detailed' than modern Spendor and Harbeth stand mount speakers I've heard, but they dissect and highlight those details in a more forthright way. I love their speed, punch and control, along with (relatively) headache free ease of placement. Driven by an Arcam SA30 by the way. It seems up to the job. Going to give them another day or two to be sure, but they're certainly right up there with the v best I've had in my room...just a pity they're so massive!

A very comprehensive technical review of these ATC's. I didn't know they use underhung coils but then again I would expect nothing less from them. I wonder if all their drivers are of the same principle. I didn't know they were sealed boxes either - the limited bass is to be expected then. They are a bit bulky to classify them as bookshelves in my book and also their curved sides precludes them from being used as bookshelves. For me bookshelves are those speakers that can indeed perform on a bookshelf. Now I don't think such a thing is marketed but that's the meaning of the word. Other than that, what is described here is a very purist design, as pure as they come in fact. Based on that, we should all be buying ATC's but alas purist designs always come with a price. I don't think ATC cut any corners in their approach: for someone that buys these, they probably expect that someone to assume this is a product that performs within its intended purpose, no less, no more. I believe the same holds true even for their more expensive models: they all have their limitations but are all honest performers within those limitations.

But I think the portfolio isn’t quite complete without covering the 90 year old British Classic..Tannoy. I also notice that most speakers reviewed are bookshelf speakers, some enjoy bookshelves better I totally respect that. But the fact that outside the studios nearly all bookshelf speakers are rested on decent stands and takes up the same (of not more) footprint and costs about the same as the next model up, the floor standing version. So it would be great if there will be some reviews on floorstanders. Great great work!! Keep it up Tarun!!

ATC SCM 40 are the speakers that have enough bass a 3 way with a separate midrange driver which is scaled back version of the pro midrange driver. They are 40 litres instead of 19 but cost 3700 pounds in the UK. ATC can be driven by as little as 75 watts per channel provided it is a amplifier with a great power supply. I think a preamp and power amp set up is preferable to get the best out of the speakers

Another insightful review tarun, I love your way of reviewing & describing audio terms that we can easily understand too many reviewers use these words such as timbre without expressing what that means I doubt they even know themselves 🤨 On a separate note you advocate the use of a sub woofer in a hifi set up any chance you do a video on this how to set up what a sounds like with & without. I think this would make a interesting video maybe you could get REL to supply a sub to review Thanks Madds

Hi Tarun, really enjoy your informed, clear and entertaining ( a refreshing lack of ego!)reviews. Just wondered if you will have the Spendor A7's available to review as I have now been listening to them for a few weeks recently and rate them highly(noting the observations you make regarding the products in this video), especially on the end of Graham Slee amplification and cables? Keep up the good work as it is grand to know there is a voice of considered and intelligent sense in an area prone to increasing daftness.

Hi Andrew, I haven’t spoken to Spendor as yet. I am sure I will at some point. Thank you for the suggestion. Looks like you are putting together a very capable system. Thank you for watching. I appreciate your support 😉😂

I have to agree with the Leben/ATC combo below. A very unlikely match, but the sound is more than likely incredible. I have to admit, I just recently sold my ATC 19v2 (after 3 years). Mainly, because of listening to the other folks non-experience, belly button opinions. So I replaced them with - I'll just say, a different speaker. After Day 3 of ownership I quickly realized the SCM19's, are quite awesome. Even with 22 watts and ~50 watts. I have noticed that I'm missing how the ATC 's present music back to me!! Songs that I'm very familiar with are missing that extra something that I know was there before! Of course the speakers I have now sound just a little better at low volume and have a little better low end, but was it worth it????🤦🏽‍♂️ I got really lucky building my system that was until I sold the ATC'S. I'm going back to them for sure and just listen to my music. The next set of speakers doesn't necessarily mean "better". Just my two cents. Thanks for sharing your review👍

Great review👍👍 but I don't think they lack bass, they are very precise in bass and go low, so you must try to find location in room where they couple with acoustics well, height is also important dimension for that. I have them for four years and do not need subwoofer.

Really enjoying your take on hi fi. I tune into your videos whether I’m interested in the product or not as I am learning more about appreciating both music replay and a system’s strength and weaknesses-whereas other reviewers I only watch if I’m interested in the product. Great to see your channel growing and I’m confident you’ll stay objective despite manufacturers sending you review samples. I do find your room to sound overly bright though, listening to your voice and reviews where you play music I can hear a lot of reflected HF. We all hear differently, I like a warmer sound myself (valves/Klipsch Heritage) but I do wonder how your room sound affects your judgement on what you hear?

Hi N.K. thank you for watching and your support. I have no interest in doing these videos if I can’t remain objective and impartial. I haven’t had any bad experiences with manufacturers to date. The ones I have contacted have all agreed to send me gear and leave me to it. If any try to expert any influence I will just send the product back. I have problems with the mic working through an USB C adapter on my iPad Pro which causes the sound issue on my videos. The room is actually not too bad. Thank you for your support 😉👍

Hello Tarun As a retired Audio Engineer and music lover I really admire and enjoy your beautifully balanced reviews. Regarding the ATC 19 and indeed most of their passive units they need first class amplification and to this end I have found their own amplifiers certainly excel. May I suggest you give us a review of,for example, the ATC SIA2-150 integrated amp which I for one would love to hear given in your own inimitable style.

Thank you Mark. I value your professional opinion and your kind words of support are much appreciated. I am planning to get more ATC products in for review. The next one might be the SCM7 as it is the entry to the range and at £875, much more accessible. I am curious as to how much of the SCM19s strengths are retained. I will definitely like to review their electronics at some point as well. Thank you for the suggestion. 😉👍

Smashed it again Tarun. Very well researched review and by next year I wouldn’t be surprised to see you with 50k well deserved subscribers. I used to have some ATC many moons ago and they were fab but ugly 😂 (albeit serious looking and utilitarian) interesting that they are made in Stroud as I have family there.

A British Audiophile I did a factory tour of Meridian with my Norwich dealer Martins and they have an amazing screening room there. I did feel their speakers are over priced when you factor in their sound and R&D compared to the likes of B&W and Focal which are akin to visiting NASA headquarters. I look forward to seeing many more of your videos and I’d love to see what you think of the new Australian brigadier stand mounts compared to ATC and Buchart. They use top scanspeak drivers and are really special

I have always felt that Meridian have made some superb electronics over the years. Probably down to Bob Stuart’s expertise. Never enjoyed their speakers. Always found them cold and clinical. Having said that, I haven’t listened to a pair in years so it may be very different now. If I a chance, I will take a look into the speakers from Aus.

A British Audiophile I listened to all the new ones and to my ears they lacked definition and agility. Sort of homogenised sound similar to what I’ve experienced with B&O. Pleasant - but not for critical listening IMHO. I don’t like to name bash but for a quarter of the price B&W ATC, Focal and PMC will show them a clean pair of heels and are much more engaging.

I enjoy every one of your reviews and this one is no exception. I am currently testing 19s as an upgrade from 11s v1, with so far surprising results. It would be good if you could do a comparative results of 11s, 19s, 20s with subwoofer and 40s. My system is Pioneer N-50AE, Musical Fidelity E20/E30 refurbished in 2023, ATC SCM 11, JL Audio D100, Neotech NEMOS-5080 speaker cable. Regards
