We moved here to Escazu 2-1/2 years ago from California to retire and love it. We’ve been to Atenas a couple of times and had a friend who lived there. I agree with your assessment. We love Costa Rica in general and we’re so glad we moved here. I just found your channel today by accident but will subscribe and look forward to hearing more from you.
Was researching my destination in. Costa Rica and the quote Atenas- Land of eternal spring". caught my fancy... nuked the beach idea and went to 4200 foot elevation in San Vito ...
Atenas is beautiful however too hot for us.We prefer the mountains in Heredia in the Central Valley with more locals than Gringos .Highs 78 lows 60. No need for AC. This is just our opinion only. We believe Central Valley has the best climate. 👌we have Gringo friends that live in Atenas. Thanks for sharing
Love your comment @sandra! I (Patrick) looked in Heredia but other criteria for where to live kept pulling me towards the Pacific. But I do love where you are! (and I don't have AC where I am either, but some do for sure)

Agreed, Atenas is beautiful but has become way too hot. I was vacationing in Vista Atenas a little over a year ago and it had caught fire the week before we arrived. Our AirBnB hosts (Swiss/Cuban) were constantly cleaning the ashes out of their pool. They have since listed their property on Point2Homes for 1150,000 USD (It's an amazingly lovely property). I am greatly saddened by global climate change and that Atenas is projected to become dryer and more desertlike within twenty years. Pura Vida.
It's so strange. When I was looking for places to settle in CR I heard/read repeatedly that Atenas has the best climate. Fast forward to two days ago where my daughter had a new friend over who currently lives in Atenas. Since I haven't had the chance to make it to Atenas yet, I asked him how's the weather and he said, "Oh it's hot." I was like 👀 I am currently renting a place in Santa Ana (it can get pretty hot here) and I was so shocked to hear about Atenas - since it is up higher than we are.
This is great Ive lived here for almost 10 years and what you are saying is right on. We live in Vista which is cool b we are half tico and half gringo and right mostly Canadian. I agree about Monsoon incredible Indian food. Big surprise to me for sure. I am pretty sure that the National Geographic story is an urban legend. I am posting this March 10 24 and yesterday it was 95 (not where II live, it was only 85 here). the people are amazing here. Everyone lets you to break in when you are turning onto a road. My favorite Atenas story is the roads are really narrow in town with lots of street parking - my side view mirror hit one of a car on the street and knocked it off. The lady came out and looked at it and actually laughed a litttle bit - and I was profusely apologizing she laughed again a little. (I speak Spanish reasonably well). We exchanged emails. She sent me the amount to fix an gave me her bank information and I sent her the money (I sent her double). Not sure it would. Have gone down like that anywhere outside of CR. Local Costa Rican here, Atenas was pretty famous among Costa Ricans because it was on the way to the beach, until they built the route 27 which connects San José with the Pacific in about half the time. I think this worked in Atenas favor though, it became less crowded, I personally haven't been there like in 20+ years.
I have not heard that, and hard to say from experience as I am less frequently in Grecia. But as it is tighter to the surrounding mountains that is entirely possible.
I watched many of your videos and I enjoyed them very much. I think you are to the point without wasting our time. This one wins my heart because of the climate and the ocean view. Is this the only place in Costa Rica where you can have that kind of weather with an ocean view? I visited Liberia Playa del Coco, Samara. They are all nice but I don't want to be in a tourist area. I prefer expat town.
