AtGames Sega Genesis Flashback 2018 Review | Is it as bad as they say? 

The Master System controllers only had 2 buttons on them, so there was no Start or Select like a NES controller. The pause button was on the console itself. The AT games setup with the 2 buttons mapped to B and C, with Start as the pause button is the ideal setup. 12 year old me would have loved a pause button on the Master System controller back in the day.

Totally right... This 2018 version is the one I own and it’s better than the official one from Sega as its supports SD card and ROMs. Emulation is fine, not like previous AT Games consoles.

This one is actually pretty solid, the only negative I give the system is when you use a background\wallpaper it causes a hitch in the games but if you leave it without a background\wallpaper the games pretty much run near perfect.

You're not crazy, it's actually a excellent system.

The only issue I had with this 2018 model that the 2017 model did better was that the 2018 edition doesn't run PAL roms properly, on the 2017 edition once you managed to get a hack working, you can run roms from any region with zero issues. Other than that though, it is a fairly good dedicated console. Great review as always Patton, keep up the great work buddy.

Big fan of the 2018 version of the Flashback - Not a clue on how it stacks up against the new Genesis Mini but for me, cartridge support, cheaper price point, six button Bluetooth pads, SD card support and so on make it a winner. Emulation is excellent to my (untrained) eyes. Also supports various other consoles and addons as well!

I had not heard about the history of AtGames or tried any of their previous products, but I did decide to get the 2018 version of the Sega Genesis Flashback last Christmas and I was pretty impressed at the time by what I played, so naturally when your video popped up to talk about it and what your opinions were, I'm happy to hear that you felt the same as well. I'm very interested in watching a comparison video between this and the Sega Genesis Mini since whatever ends up being the best emulation and interface is likely what I'm going to spend the most time adding games to. Missed opportunity not playing Mr. Balls. Props on the review. Good to see that they're improving. Also, I enjoyed that intro, and you're editing is really good. The magic system swap, the fades and zooms, really clean without calling too much attention to itself.

Love the intro!!! And the box opening audio reminded me of the chainsaw in DooM. This system kinda reminds me of how AtGames came out with the Atari Flashback 9. The instructions say that genesis plus gx is the emulator for this system.

Very funny intro, well I am pretty surprised and I noticed it is powered by LibRetro so no wonder it works pretty good, the emulation must be being handled by Pico drive or Genesis Plus GX core.

Ordered it from Target, they are down to 4. Waiting on your Mini review to open either one and see which gets returned, lol.

There you have it, now you know that AtGames wasn't fired from making everything SEGA related, they were only fired from making the Genesis Mini. (the box for this thing says it's licensed, that's how i know) All jokes aside, this system is awesome. Many of their previous attempts were just decent-to-awful, but this one is FREAKING AWESOME! My only question is... why didn't they announce it before it came out?

I got this one awhile back after I found out about it luckily I got mine at a Target in the store not having to order it online and I'm very pleased with it the games play great on it and so does cartridge games as for the SD card I've yet to do mine and add game roms

I agree with you 100 percent I have one and the only thing that I didn't like was no box art for the games on sd card but that's fixed now there is a cfw for it that lets you redirect the system to the ad card and a game manager that lets you set up the card with master system, game gear, Genesis, and Sega cd games i loaded 500 games on mine using a 32gb sdcard all with box art and now it's perfect. My brother got mine and his to run more Master System, Game Gear, Sega CD, SG-1000 games . They all run great, sound is very good. And yes they all save too and you can rewind if you needed to! This is by far one AT Games Flashback console I love, and I also love the Atari Flashback 9 too as it also supports an SD feature so you can add every Atari/ Sears Telegames, Homebrew Atari games to it as well! I'd say AT Games quality is not bad now!

Did you test it for mega drive games on the so card?

My flashback freezes after about 5-10min of play.. any ideas? It had no sound right from the store but didn't freeze.. once I updated it the sound worked but freezes now.

When AtGames gets Sonic and Knuckles, but the Mini doesn't...

Oh man, I have wondered if this allowed games through the SD card. There is one local to me that I am gonna have to grab tomorrow. Is the “rename the rom process” described on their site? I have sooo many sega files. Thank you!!!

@Patton Plays I have the 2018 Flashback, I agree with your reviews of the system, it is pretty decent. However, the resolution looks terrible on my two LED television, definitely does not look HD, the edges on the graphics look very pixilated. I have seen videos on this system and the graphics look a lot smoother. Are you able to advise me on this?

Can you save your game progress with cartridge games as in actual mega cartridges you insert into the machine? Also can you do the same with sd card rom games?

@patton plays You're the only one who could possibly help any idea why the mode button serves as the menu button? im using a wired original sega genesis controller with a mode button top right corner and it keeps going to menu is there any other way to make this mode button function properly i need it to play bruce lee story in this game it would not let bruce lee switch his fighting stands at all, is there anyone else having this problem and or a solution?

BTW, has anyone noticed an issue with the Genesis Flashback Game manager and pulling down boxart when adding a game or modifying games? It seems to be failing to pull from Google.

Hope that Super Street Fighter II with the PCM driver fix works on this, the voices sound so much better and clearer in this hack it's 👌 really. Any Genesis SSF2 fan should try this, also love that the mini games can be turned off

With the custom firmware update on the Sega Genesis Flashback 2018, I was able to play Phantasy Star Gaiden, Shining Force: The Sword Of Hajya, and Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible.

Does it supports the sega Power base converter?

Hello Patton. I just tested out the custom firmware update on my AtGames Sega Genesis Flashback 2018 with some SG-1000 games (Girl's Garden and Star Jacker) and they both worked perfectly. Since the custom firmware update is based on Genesis Plus GX, I also heard that it works with Sega Pico games which I am going to test out soon when I have the time.

Well.. I think I have a 2016 version. Ugh. It's not bad though. But it would be nice to have the SD card slot and save states.

One thing I like better about the flashback than the mini is that the flashback comes with 6 button controllers while the mini comes with 3 button controllers. I much prefer the 6 button over the 3 button. Especially when it comes to games like SF or MK.

Sounds not bad. The problem is that the Mega Drive Flashback costs more than the Mega Drive Mini here in Germany, so I don't think that I will pick one up.

CRT filter is crap if you're looking for visual accuracy. And the inconsistent pixel sizes in default view would drive me nuts. But other than that I'm surprised at how solid this system is! If i spot one in the wild i may actually pick it up.

17:00 The master system only had two buttons on the controller. I think they were called "1" and "2" (creative, huh?) One of the buttons had a dual function of a regular playable button and also the start button. I believe it was button "1".

Its good with CFW on it, did it to mine recently and added all the mega drive games i need, only downside is it tends to suddenly crash and restart sometimes, but it was doing this before i added the CFW, most of the time it runs fine

Nice review Patton. Just one thing, the Master System control didn't have the "Start" button, it had only the D PAD and buttons 1 and 2. On the console itself had the buttons "pause" and reset ", and the button 1 of the control did the function of Start.

I reckon this is better than the Mega Drive mini. The Mega Drive mini only has 42 games built into it and in order to add your own games the system needs to be hacked, but with this 2018 ATGAMES Flashback model you have over 60 SEGA Mega Drive games built into it with an added cartridge slot plus an SD card slot where you can add your own games into the system without it being hacked. Just a shame that ATGAMES got their emulation near perfect right towards the end of their product license run under the supervision of SEGA. They have been making these systems since as far as I know 2008 and it took them 10 years just to finally give us a near perfect system, but by 2018 all the trust and faith into the ATGAMES brand has cost the company severely and from all the negative feedback from fans over the last ten years caused SEGA to cut ties with ATGAMES.

The fact that they gave you four Phantasy Star games is worth that $60 price alone. Way better than that awful 2017 version which I review a while ago.

I ordered a 'PlayStation classic mini' but when it arrived it was a copy. A copy in every way. Looked similar but slightly different. Can I mod this to emulate psx games? How do I do this? Will it be the same as modding a real psx mini?

The 2018 FB model menu, filters, other features and game emulation are very similar to what we received on the Genesis Mini. Either AtGames actually had something to do with the Mini or Sega allowed/gave AtGames their emulation efforts as a consolation to use for their 2018 FB model. Just saying they’re very similar

I really like the 2018 flashback ! I added over 50 games via SD-card. But some roms like world of illusion sounds scratchy, don't know why. Do you have the same issues ? Let me know !( Sonic 3 and Sonic 3 and Knuckles runs flawless). Your review is one of the better made on RU-vid ! Nice !

Great review Patton it was very honnest and unbiased, mostly peopel that review give a shitty dishonnest review as they don't want to give any chance to that product and it's sad for people that would be interest but they won't give a chance because of dishonnest people !!
