The Gaṇapati Atharvaśīrṣa Upaniṣad (गणपत्यथर्वशीर्षोपनिषत्) is found in the Atharva Veda. It is considered the most important text on Lord Ganesha. Atharva means oneness of purpose and śīrṣa means intellect directed towards liberation. Gaṇapati Atharvaśīrṣa Upaniṣad reveals the Truth or ultimate reality as Lord Gaṇesha. It is also referred to as the Sri Ganapati Atharva Sirsha, the Ganapati Atharvashirsha, the Ganapati Atharvasirsa, or the Ganapati Upanishad.
The Gaṇapati Atharvaśīrṣa Upaniṣad is especially popular in the state of Maharashtra in India. It is chanted daily as a prayer, repeated as a mantra, chanted whilst performing the ritualistic worship (pūjā) and the fire worship (homa). The mantras of the Upaniṣad are meditated upon to realize the infinite Truth represented as Gaṇapati. Om Gaṁ Gaṇapataye Namaḥ.
