These coins were first issued after the Greeks defeated the Persians. When Athena saw the owl for the first time, she was taken by its beauty and large eyes.It was once said that the owl of Minerva would only spread his wings when dusk falls. As Athena was the goddess of wisdom, and owl became her symbol, hence why the owl is still seen that way today.Fantastic coin and video my friend
That Owl coin is awesome to say the least. To see one in that state and giving the history of said coin, owning one would be a honor. This was one of the coolest coins I have seen in a while. Thanks
Ohh yes, you´ve got it! This is imho THE most iconic ancient coin ever. To imagine the great philosophers whose names echo to this day might have handled our very own coins is incredible! And the coin is gorgeous, on top of all its historical significance.
I really like how these coins have a super high relief and this example has particularly nice centering It’s easy for me to see why Ben the coingeek chose this owl for his icon
To me, (the non professional), this is THE classic ancient coin. Really love this design. But I'm always afraid of counterfeits. NGC doesn't guarantee the authenticity of ancients they grade, and I have absolutely no information on how to tell a real one from a fake. NGC does their best I guess but it's always in the back of my mind when I see such a fantastic specimen like the one you have. It helps to know that a giant hoard was found recently though. There should be lots of slicked down examples if this coin was used and produced as much as advertised. I haven't looked actually. I really love this coin and I'm glad you have one. BTW, what does "Parliament collection" on the label refer to?
Yes, I have some of those same concerns. That is why I will only buy one of these that had been slabbed. I feel better knowing a professional at least believes it is real. A group of owls is called a Parliament. Thanks! 😀👍
@@Ontario100 Sounds reasonable, at least there is 'SOMEONE' actually having a look and believes it to be real. I looked at those a while back and the price was a bit steep for me at that time. But 1K for an example like you have would be in my price range. Yours is an absolute beauty. Definitely an asset to your collection. I would love to have one. Well done.
Very beautiful coin! There are more Owls in the market nowadays but It's getting harder to find a natural looking coin, most of these coins are cleaned with an ugly blast white surface. By the way I think NGC accidentally placed the reverse as obverse during the slabbing, the obverse should be the side with the Athena's portrait
@@Ontario100 obviously if it works out, I’ll be promptly making a video. I looked through tons before choosing one so I believe it’ll be a good choice.
Nice coin indeed, the toning makes it look even better in my opinion. A lot of these coins have been dipped to have a “shiny” new look so they can sell higher, which is sad
