Athens, the capital of Greece, is the most beautiful city in the world, especially when covered by a white veil of snow. Something extremely rare for this city that happens every 10 to 15 years.
The monuments of Athens, the streets and the sidewalks now look even more beautiful, while the colorful houses in the old town glow in the off-white setting.
The #neighborhood of the Acropolis with the New Museum of the Acropolis and the Street dedicated to Dionysius the Areopagite, the first Athenian to be baptized a Christian. The Roman Theater of Herodes Atticus, an impressive venue that hosts the Athens festival every year. The Acropolis bathed in snow with the Parthenon temple standing out.
Opposite the hill of Philopappos, where crowds despite the heavy snowfall continue to enjoy the special weather conditions that hit the city. Runners, cyclists, people with mountaineering accessories, young people snowboarding, walkers with their beautiful dogs.
Around every stone and every hill hides countless ancient stories and myths. The prison of the Philosopher Socrates, The Hill of the Muses, Pnyx, the Holy Ice… We continue on the street dedicated to the Apostle Paul who preached the word of God to the Athenians and then Thiseio, a beautiful neighborhood of Athens with New buildings. Next door is the street dedicated to the Roman Emperor Hadrian who loved the city deeply and did many public works. The Ancient Agora of Athens, the gallery of Attalos and the famous Monastiraki, while the colored houses of Plaka at the foot of the Acropolis have already begun to appear. All snowy and beautiful.
In Syntagma Square is the palace of the first King of modern Greece, the Bavarian Otto, while today it houses the Greek parliament.
The snow beautifies even more this sunny ancient city of the Mediterranean. Its inhabitants may not be accustomed to the extreme weather conditions, but they love the snowy landscape and rush to rejoice like children making snowmen and playing snowball fights.
Do not miss the opportunity to visit Athens and experience the joys, emotions and magic it offers!
ATHENS, Greece - Heavy snowfall covered the Acropolis and other ancient monuments in Athens, causing power outages in the Greek capital, as weather cut off many services across the country and closed main roads, leaving many drivers trapped in their cars for hours.
The snow, an unusual sight in the Greek capital of more than 3 million people, also stopped most public transport. Hundreds of tree branches fell on power lines, causing blackouts in many suburbs, while an area in the northern suburbs of the city was declared a state of emergency. Some of the affected suburbs were also left without water.
Snow is common in the mountains of Greece and in the north of the country, but much rarer in the capital. Some Athenians took pictures on balconies and in the streets.
Adults also went out to play, skiing on the hilly slopes of the capital. A man was skiing along the hill of Pnyx in the center of Athens, near the Acropolis.
Sections of the main Athens-Thessaloniki highway in Greece were also closed, leaving about 300 truck drivers blocked. Most ferry services to the islands were canceled, while flights from regional airports to Athens were suspended.
