It was the end of November as we set sail from England bound for the Caribbean on Distant Shores I. We have 2 friends aboard as crew as we set off from Las Palmas for the 3000 mile crossing to the Caribbean. We celebrate New Years at sea, lots of fast sailing, and then surprisingly have to deal with unusual light winds as we approach Antigua.
Check out Pantaenius Insurance here www.pantaenius....
While we're having our new boat built we're putting up episodes of our shows from earlier seasons of Distant Shores.

I realize that I am in the minority here, but, while I love your video and the trip looks like a great time, being trapped on a boat with 3 other people for 3 weeks just seems like hell on earth to me. Doing it solo, if I had the ability, would be WAAAAAY more enjoyable to me. Thank you for all your informative and entertaining videos.

Distant Shores TV not sure yet, my current sailboat is in Puerto Rico, it's a Hans christian 33 but my wife is a bit of a size queen so we might move up to a 38. We are heading to San Francisco on Wednesday to look at a Baba 40 that is in great shape. As you can see I like double enders and full keel botes 😇

Hi Paul and Cheryl. I have enjoyed your videos for several years now. They are very informative and interesting. The part where you (Paul) used the radio caused me to check out your name at RAC. Interesting callsign (I presume that it's you :) ). Hopefully we'll meet up on the air someday if so. Keep making the vids and have a great day. Fair winds and following seas! 73

Great Video! Btw, in what position did you have the centerboard while downwind in the trades? Looking at southerly as a boat for myself in the future
@DistantShoresTV
@DistantShoresTV 7 лет назад
Thanks +D Gourdine ! Most of the time we have the keel swung up between 1/3 and 2/3 up... as it swings aft and up into the hull that helps us go downwind. If the seas are small then sometimes we put it all the way up.

Hi, we are planning our first crossing this November.... I noticed that you have an SSB radio on board. Any hints or tips on best / most used frequencies for the crossing? Do you have / have you used or any other experience of using a Pactor modem with the set to recieve weather gribs and email? Kind regards - Sail safe!

Leaving the uk in November you could have encountered adverse weather in the channel or off the coast of France and Portugal. Was the late departure so you could arrive in the Caribbean after the hurricane season?
@DistantShoresTV
@DistantShoresTV 7 лет назад
Yes Lucas - we were worried about bad weather ... our boat was delayed from the builder by 3 months and it pushed us into the late crossing. When we realized it was going to mean crossing Biscay so late I studied the weather patterns over the previous 10 years and looked out for the right weather to get a window. In the end it meant motoring most of the way but with really large swells!

I really want to sail well be a passenger on a sail boat to see if I would enjoy buying a boat and sailing the problem is I’m 48 am I to old to start this new chapter?? I literally have no experience with boats or the ocean

We meet many people your age and older just getting started. I must say most people out sailing these days are older than 48. Its just that You-Tubers tend to be younger since they're trying to earn while sailing 👍😊
