I have always dreamed of catching my first Atlantic Salmon. Would this trip be the one that I finally catch one? How about a big one? This trip was marked with so many special moments: Meeting Matti and Ragna, watching and documenting “The Mink” on the prowl and exploring northern Iceland.
Prior to the trip, Ben and I bet $100 that he could “call his shot”, if he sees a fish, he can catch it. You decide, do I owe Ben $100 or not?! Who knew you could tight-line nymph for Atlantic Salmon?
The Mýrarkvísl River in Iceland is a special place. I cannot think of a better river to fish for Atlantic Salmon when you consider both population numbers and size of the fish.
Special thanks to our guide and great friend Matthías Þór Hákonarson.

I fished here and it was epic! Everything was epic. I hooked and caught 9 salmon in a few days. The amount of running up and down canyons was awesome! I need to go back!

Nice video but why the music in the background? Why dont you let the nature speak. I mean, that’s part of the fly fishing itself

What rod would you use there ? An 8wt be too heavy ?
@FlyFishingJourneys
@FlyFishingJourneys 9 месяцев назад
Hi Tim - typically I’m on a 7wt for salmon on this river. An 8 would be ok too, especially if you were throwing the weighted streamers on the wind. If you were nymphing or throwing small salmon flies, a 7 or 8 would be fine.

Would you say it makes sense to go fishing for a day? We aren't traveling with gear.
@FlyFishingJourneys
@FlyFishingJourneys 2 года назад
For sure it would. It’s called day tours and both my Icelandic contacts have them on regular basis. It just comes down to where you are going to be and what you want to fish for. If you send me an email with this info, i’ll get you connected for your day’s permit and if you want a guide. My contacts with have everything you need from waders/boots to rods/reels and flies. How much does it cost to fish for Atlantic Salmon in this River??! Is it mostly for the Wealthy 😊??! Because if it is then I'll never fish it!! I'm a retired Fish Pathologist in Oregon, and now an Outdoor (fishing and archery hunting for Elk, which is the largest Red Deer in the World) and a Science writer, fishing for all Pacific Salmon species except Pink Salmon)!! And formerly I was a Salmon and Steelhead, Trout fishing for Sea-Run Cutthroat, Brook trout, Bull trout and Brown Trout. and guided in Oregon and Southwest Washington State)!! Here everyone for the price of a fishing license and a Steelhead/Salmon Tag can fish for them and even retain Steelhead (anadromous Rainbow Trout) hatchery Steelhead, and Salmon from hatchery Origin!! And of course these fish go to the Ocean in the same manner as the Wild and Native ones do. And yes there's difference between Wild and Native Steelhead and Salmon!! Oh and of course with the aforementioned license and Tag Everyone including people from Other Countries may fish for both Salmon and Steelhead without a guide. But without a guide, a lot of anglers Don't Catch any without a guide!! A long time ago, I even fished for Salmon and Steelhead with "live/nature" bait, and now I prefer Fly Fishing, by the way I noticed that the "Irish"?? person making these Videos, Spells Fly Fishing as One word!! My college instructors of English Composition, who were anglers, with Serious intent, Corrected me when I once wrote Fly Fishing as one word😊!! Sorry about my comment regarding the poper spelling of Fly Fishing!!! I just noticed that the makers of this video aren't the people who spelled Fly Fishing, as Flyfishing. So please accept my apology!!

Sorry for the delay in responding. A week of salmon fishing runs about $8000 for 6 nights and 6 full days of fishing. That is full accommodations, catering, guiding and transfers. That is in peak season too. Let me know if you have any further questions or need more info…Rob

Crappy fishing 450 salmon per year in this river! I could have stayed home in Atlantic Canada and had better fishing for half the cost.
