Wow, that's amazing! lifeanim8ed over on tumblr, T. Estrada, said that you supervised over all of Kida's animation, and I just wanted to thank you personally (well, as personally as you can get over the internet!) because ever since I was a KID, I'd always loved her design and really just how beautiful she was! I don't know, I think with how individual this film was, combined with Cree Summers' VA, and her character design, she just feels so singularly different, a cut above the rest of her "princess ilk". :) So thank you for that. P.S. Speaking of Cree Summers, I always saw stuff circulating that you found her to be intimidating, & that really drove you to animate her the way that you did, all fierce and amazing. x) Is that true?
I can't believe this movie did so badly, as a kid it was one of my favorite movies! The animation was well defined and had great effects, so did Treasure Planet. CGI is just a gimmick to me, like 3D, it takes so much skill, planning, and direction to make a beautiful Animated movie. CGI feels like there cheating, and it will never have the beauty and vibrance that animation has.
0:04 Kida: They do not know anything better! * Took one of Thunder's fish. * We were once a great people, now we live in ruins! Thunder the Night Light: * Growls angrily * 0:08 Kida: * Surprised * * She realizes she took Thunder's food. * Thunder the Night Light: * Scoffs " put it back in my bowl. " *
I thuoght I was the only one who ever liked Kida XD. In fact she has a cool personality and she is not as dumb and innocent like other Diney pricess, sorry if i offended somebody =D. But overall She is the hottest of all
I Kalderon Her mixture personality between aggressive, violent and kind and caring is also what makes her realistic. Because no one on the face of this earth is JUST kind, caring or JUST aggressive and violent.
I hope this isn't rude to ask, but how did you come across these clips? Oh, and I love how fluid and heartfelt Kida's expressions are. Reminds me of why I want to be an animator in the first place.
@SchizoSchematic ya I've always loved Glen Keane...i love how animators actually have to become the character themselves in order to get those expressions, call this lame/corny but it's as if there's this bond between artist and character- it's the key to bringing the character to life.
@CaptainConnorsaurus Agreed. Hand-drawn animation = baking a cake from scratch CGI = buying the cake from a store. Both are equally fantastic mediums unique in their own way but there's something about a plain pencil on paper that's just so classic that can't be beat, you know?
@ObiTrev agreed, Treasure Planet had brilliant hand drawn animation mixed just perfectly with the little bit of CGI. Some movies are just meant to be CGI'd though, like "Dinosaur" and "Finding Nemo"
I can't believe I'm saying this, but Kida was the only cartoon character that I had a crush on. Call me insane, but whoever drew her, made her look so hot, it kind of makes me wish she was real, so I could get her phone number.
@nddlj When i was in school for animation, one of my teachers had worked with disney and used to tell stories of some of the things the animators would do to try and get the characters right. one of the head animators of the beast wore a cloak and hunched over in front of a mirror making funky expressions for hours trying to capture a feel he felt was right for his walk and scowl etc.
@@lillyimaginator Out of my head, I remember some scenes from Robin Hood where lifted from Snow White and The Jungle Book, but those are the most obvious ones because they were traced. The studio used reference sheets for certain movesets that were based on life drawings and were used for multiple films, ergo why some scenes look similar from one movie to another. This helped to keep a certain level of quality without having to sacrifice production time. With the change to 3D however, all that work was mostly lost, though I'm sure some animators still use those books as reference. Check "The Animator's Survival Kit" by Richard Williams.
@nddlj What about Ponyo then? It was hand drawn, and quite beautiful. I'm sure Findining nemo could have been been animated the same way, and still be a sucess. Animation is more to stop motion as CGI is to pupettering.
@CaptainConnorsaurus yeah i enjoy 3D animation....but I will always prefer the old school Disney/ Don Bluth animation... because they're literally only using pencil and paper, i feel like hand drawn is just fresher, more hearfelt, and stronger than animation. and it definetely involves alot more work.
