I guess I should feel lucky, because when I bought my Atlas Craftsman 12" X 36" Lathe. It was dirty but it didn't have a lot of use. I took everything apart and gave it a good cleaning up and going over. When I put the gears back together I used a piece of paper folded in half. And put that in between the gears to set the proper clearance. That was something that Mr. Pete suggested in one of his videos. And I use Lucas oil on my gears and my Atlas Craftsman Lathe runs very quiet.

i took the gear/s off that drives the leadscrew as the noise was shocking.....for the little time i use the lathe running without it isn't so bad, but the idea of going to one of your gear sets really appeals

Very nice.. I'm all about quieting my machines down. I did a video on speed reducing a wood band saw and that uses Nylon gears to keep it quiet. I've been running it that way for years with no issues. Don

That's great! My lathe is really noisy, probably drive you insane. I just bought some 140 Wt oil so since I bought it I gotta try it first, but I'll definitely keep the honey and your gears in mind. My mill is quite noisy too! Tried grease but it's not the right lubricant either, probably causing damage actually.

My 1940's Atlas 12"x42" has the two small gears like this one as opposed to the newer lathes that have larger idler gears; it was so noisy that I went to using chassis grease. This worked so well , I drilled the two gear mounting screws and installed Zerk fittings--just pump in some grease when using the gearbox and good to go. Back in the 1980's when I bought this lathe it had no quick change; called the factory and they said "we have one QC kit left" and I bought it at something like $280' also several new parts including the leadscrew with optional thrust roller, some half-nuts and a new 3-J chuck. Was not aware plastic gears are available; what is the source ?

Great tips! I like the looks of that motor honey lube. Does it run off the gears if you don't use the lathe for a while, like a month or so?

A simple way to independently adjust the clearance between the spindle gear and the 20T & 24T reversing/idler gears is to remake the adjustable pawl retention plate that the forward and reverse lever engages in. Make it first without holes for the pawl plunger, set the position of each gear by setting the gap with a piece of thick paper rolled between the gears, ( about 0.003" - 0.004") , remove the spring loaded plunger from the arm then transfer punch that position to the new plate. Do this for each gear then drill the required holes.

Interesting Video, should help a lot of people that have Atlas/Craftsman Lathes! Have you bought any tools or machines lately? Looking for a BOTT video from you, kinda miss those! Not a lot of Tool, Machines, or Tooling down here in Ar. Really enjoyed all of your videos, in fact have been looking at some of your oldest ones. Stay Safe and God Bless!
