The Atomic Cannon, at 280 mm, was the largest nuclear weapons capable mobile artillery piece manufactured by the United States. On May 25, 1953, a 280 mm cannon fired an atomic projectile a distance of 7 miles at the Nevada Test Site. The test known as "Grable," exploded with a force of 15 kilotons, similiar to that of Hiroshima. Twenty 280 mm cannons were manufactured. None were used in battle. Sequence from the HD version of "Trinity and Beyond - The Atomic Bomb Movie" available on blu-ray.

The War Department lol. How is this not useful? I understand this is 20__ and we don’t use nukes in war at this time, but this was the next gen war weapon that conflicts would be resolved for decades to come. Why would you not innovate it to be highly versatile for all scenarios of combat?

The tall columns of smoke are there to measure the effect of the blast on the air. They bend and sway due to the blastwave and are a good visual indicator of how the air behaves.
@Arch3an

Is it used for the effect on air, or the height of the explosion, or both? Just for information for those who don't know much about Nuclear explosions, at 1:05 the objects seem to "smoke" for a few seconds. This is because it encountering heat up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit for half a second. Then, the blast wave (shockwave) blasts it all away at nearly half the speed of sound.

Lol dude i was a 13 bravo field artillery cannon crew member. Although i was mostly working 119ers and triple 7s. There are wheels to set the azimuth of fire but that's it . even the 109A6 paladin (basically a tank that shoots 155mm shells) doesn't have a steering wheel either. Its an older model but i can tell thats not a steering wheel. It's either a way to load the artillery shell/nuke or a way to keep the powder charges in place since its such a massive cannon shooting a 500 lb bomb. The actual design is scary. No muzzle break on such a powerful cannon lol peace out. Cool video non the less. Pretty awesome how paint turns to dust from the immense heat.

I am Japanese. What do you think about nuclear weapons? I have mixed feelings. Some people say we can throw away nuclear weapons, but do they really bring good results? Ironically, one of the facts is that thanks to nuclear weapons, a total war between countries can be avoided. But I don't think this will last long. Is peace trapped in a nuclear cage really peaceful? The "peace" that has been said for a long time is too different from the modern "peace". I'm sorry if the English text is wrong. I apologize for the long sentence.
@SlapStyleAnims

Your perspective on them is certainly interesting. While two may have been dropped on your country, it did indeed stop a very bloody war already going on, but did bring two super powers on the brink of an even deadlier war. It’s a two sided issue, there’s no perfect answer

For people wondering how the cameras (usually) survive. The following info is from documents archived at DTIC. The cameras for closeup destruction shots (1:16 , cameras also visible) are placed on top of 18 or 10 foot steel poles, and have a diameter of 8 inches (called as a GSAP Tower, short from Gun Sight Aiming Point, which was a small ironsights camera used on WWII fighter planes). The poles are set into a concrete base and are anchored to the ground using guy wires. With these poles, the captured footage is unobstructed from dust flying beneath. The cameras themselves are in steel boxes protected with 2½ inch thick lead shields weighing 350 pounds. For this test named ''Grable'', 94 cameras were used, and 18 of them were destroyed and blown away. 14 of those destroyed were GSAP Towers.

...and of one of the quickest deaths known to mankind! Abominable is the person that thought up this monstrousity of monstrousities in the first place! I still remember somebody saying a simple phrase, so long ago..."Thou shalt not kill". The only reasons that the Israelites were given command to kill people, and that being a strict order from God, is because the people of other lands had settled on the lands that God had promised to his people, and that they had become ensconced in Idol Worship. God wanted the Israelites to have the lands that were to be rightfully theirs, and didn't want them involved in Idol Worship. Idol Worship is Wickedness. God told them to kill (destroy) the wicked people dwelling on God-Ordained Israelite territories. The people didn't fully follow God's commands, which were kill the wicked, and take the land. The disobedience of the Israelites led to lots of trouble in the times following. That's the only reason ever given in the Bible for killing people. This Nuclear stuff, however, was never meant to be, but some people decided to play "God", and this is the end result-Death!!!

Wallie Newen being able to harness the intrinsical power of the stars, the things that light up the universe and are the main source of it’s power? I think we are pretty clever for figuring that out...

very cool how the objects are first vaporized from the EM energy before the radioactive particles (at hypersonic speeds) and the shock waves (at the speed of sound) rip them apart

It is crazy to think about the amount of atomic weapons the United States and Soviets had combined, and how close we were to going to war

Whenever I think of nuke test videos, this is the video that always comes to my mind the most as it's such a clear video and (to me) shows the perfect mushroom cloud in terms of what you'd imagine a mushroom cloud to look like from a nuke explosion.

Note the distinctive "double" fireball of this test. Because of the low height of the explosion (524 feet), the explosion produced two shock waves, one of them reflected off the ground. This effect is explained in the Wikipedia article on Upshot-Knothole Grable.
