@TechTablets : Chris I think that you should definitely post a video with the Thunderbolt vs OcuLink statistics since there aren't many of those available. I'm sure that a lot of folks would love to see an in depth comparison to see how identical hardware performs over both protocols. (I know I would) 🙂
Sure but my Mini PC videos do so bad lately, so i'm not sure it's worth all that effort sadly. BUT if the video does well I will think about doing it. After all I bought this RTX 4090 for testing...
I hope you will do that video about TB4 vs Oculink some day, benchmarking various games. There's almost zero data on it and it is very interesting. Oculink seems to be a winner, solving TB4 bottlenecks
Quick question: Can the USB4 port be used to power the Mini PC? If so, this could make it fully portable with a battery pack. Would be a game-changer for many users. Thanks!
Great review! Still using my beloved Mini PC with nvme docked titan rtx gpu for 4 years and it's time for an upgrade. Absolue candidate for the upgrade. No more registry shortcuts to switch power plans. Amazing idea!!!
I prefer Ryzens and the 780M for my gaming handhelds. But Intel is perfect for my video editing with Adobe. Oculink is great for now until TB5 becomes a common thing which will change everything. But still in there current state I have done away with my huge loud dust magnet tower PC. Now I use mini PCs and eGPUs.
UM780 XTX is the Ryzen equivalent, but you dont get that touchscreen... waiting till they implement that into the Ryzen models. I hate this is a chinese computer though.
@@Techtablets what is Thunderbolt 5 going to change? What will it allow that Oculink doesnt? There will always be a faster connection being developed, but unless it allows for something new, I cant see it competing... Oculink allows external graphics cards which allows you to cool each unit separately, I see THAT as the reason these miniPC's will flourish.
Awesome review Chris, you literally covered all aspects in details. This is really a pretty interesting device. Apart from the CPU performance, which is not uncommon, the extra stuffs lie the Touchscreen display, intbuilt Camera, Fingerprint reader, 5G Lans, both USB4 and OCuLink ports, are keeping it apart from other brands. That's what I like about Minisforum as they are keep doing new stuffs with their devices. Regarding the M.2 2230 slot, that is a Gen 4x4 slots as well and now d days, they are not that uncommon and costly as they used to be, because of the rise of the handhelds, all using that form Factor. I have seen brands like Team group, Silicon Power offering 1TB around $70 and 2TB around $130-$140 range and that's not bad.
I agree.. but the problem is Minisforum has these new ideas that they only put in a few devices. The tiger-l.e.d is already gone... if you liked it, theres ONE product that offers it... if you like the touchscreen and built-in camera, too bad, not included on the new Ryzen UM 890Pro.
I watched your review! Thanks for the work! Which mini PC do you recommend for best oculink combo? Will the oculink be good for vr games? Looking for a small form factor for a vr racing rig.
Perhaps I should have waited a few months before buying the Minisforum MS-01. As a product engineer for Minisforum, I would focus on quieter load operation. In addition, the first thing I had to do with the MS-01 was to change the thermal paste. I applied the Noctua NT-H2. You wouldn't believe the difference it made. @Minisforum: Please make the mini PCs a little bigger but much quieter. OCuLink is fantastic.
This is a fantastic review! Welldone. Your review covered every possible questions on the mind of potential buyers and what to expect. I can also see that the oculink port is independent on any of the PCI slots, unlike in the case of UM780XTX which is directly connected to one of the two PCI slots. I don't know why I watched the whole review even though I know for a fact that I won't be buying the mini PC. I already have many mini PCs, including UM780XTX and a very powerful 14900k desktop for all my needs.
Super interesting take to have a mini stats screen, though personally would have liked to see it bundled as on board software as to not spike the price just for a pretty neat "gimmick"
Yes and the pricing worked out to be cheapoer than I expected. My guess was over 1,000 but it's under $900. Still if the screen made it $50 more expensive I prefer to not have it. While it is cool, it's not a must.
I do not mind the screen. I tend to keep my temps in check (esp with warm weather). Having it there so you can quickly glance at it is quite nice. I do think it should be expanded on, where you can instead display other stuff, like music playlist, or even photos and video. Price seems reasonable too, as it's a potent system.
Yes it would be great to have the option to use different widgets maybe custom displays of things. But I think they will be workong on something for the screen software wise. It worked ou to be cheaper than I expected. I thought around 1k maybe even $1100. But under $900 for 32GB RAM It's fair for the spec with 5G LAN and Wifi 7.
This is a neat little mini. I have the Minisfourm EliteMini UM780 XTX, and I have been enjoying portingnit between work, home, and on trips. Really like this has a built in oculink port and vastly better ram cooling (the UM780 XTX easily overheats the ram, I'veseen it read up to 95c on the ram modules) though wish this model had a 2nd usb 3.0 port in place of the older 2.0 port, but I imagine magin the chipset couldn't handle the bandwith for that given. If they make a ryzen 8000/AI (9000) version of it then I'll probably upgrade to that one.
cool you added Last epoch in your benchmark list. Wish TB4 was as good as oculink, as I own a Legion Go, and would be great to be able to add an eGPU to it. I guess with lower end GPUs the difference won't be as big.
Nice review and thnx for comparing tb4 vs Oculink,. right off the bat. Wondering what ARC drivers were you using, the latest or what they sent it with. Did you play with any of the settings in ARC control. Also for the SSD speed,. do they have encryption toggled on, I heard encryption will slow the SSD down..i know my minisforum 780Xt has it toggled by default and had similar read/write that you got. Will test with encryption off and see if there's a difference
Hi, the driver where the latest at the time if the video from Intel. As for the SSD it looks to have but defender on. So yes encrypted so that is slowing it down.
NVME M.2 2230 is quite popular now thanks to the steamdeck btw. It's not much more expensive, and many times having equal price per capacity compare to 2280 drives.
Thank you for your honest review. I have just received my barebone AtomMan X7 Ti, I couldn't find what is the maximum speed M.2 I can use, will I benefit if I used Samsung 990 Pro (7,450/6,900 MB/s) ?
Good afternoon, thank you for the cool review, I have a question and request: 1-can I use USB-4 for charging? 2-is it possible to test FPS in Dota 2 at maximum full hd settings?)
just got this PC, i found it nothing but troubles, ordered barebone, added 64bg ram and 2tb ssd loaded windows . During installation display just disappeared no matter how many times i turned on off. Then just as a 2nd option, i switched from HDMI to usbc-4 into Displayport monitor it worked. It seems hdmi not working (guessing DP also)... While installing it got stuck for internet asked to plug ethernet cable instead of wifi... I connected ethernet all got installed. But WIFI and bluetooth not found. And this ATOM display also not showing anything apart from Atom man logo. Basically wifi not detected and hmdi, dp not working. Plus LCD showing only logo. Not sure what went wrong, I will call support latrer
@TechTablets Hi, given the current pre-sale price. Would you be able to recommend it? I'm on the fence as there are more affordable mini PCs even from Minisforum that already support Oculink but seems they are Ryzen and want to try these new Core Ultra processors for medium demanding games. Thanks.
I do recommend this it's.very good but if you plan on gaming and just on the iGPU I recommend the Radeon 780M mini pcs they game better an Arc. But Intro Arc is better at editing video.
Getting frustrated waitin for the Minisforum G7 to be released. It's months behind their promised release. Wanting tp get a decent $1500 gaming pc since Jan!! About to just go ahead and buy a full size unit now. Any idea when it will be available..or should I just buy a full size pc now?? Thanks
I have the G7 Pt my review is coming it’s a great PC if you can wait. They also added coiling to this one in the video I just covered but the G7 Pt has the RX 7600 XT which is great for most needs accept 4k gaming. Not sure why it’s taking so long to release. Stock it supply issues?
@@Techtablets thanks! I forgot to ask if the mini pcs can be powered by the docking stations as well, which eould make them behave like a laptop connected to a docking station, which is very convenient (forget about the power brick!).
With an external GPU (OC. CON.) I wonder what 1440 looks like. On the website it looks to be about $860-$890. I think this could be the mini PC or SFF I need to replace my 2018 build. Thanks for this review.
Thanks. For me, you did show too much GPU performance and comparisons. I would have been much more interested in CPU performance, as I had the i7-13700h. I would have been interested in PL1 and PL2 settings for maximum power. The i7-13700h had a lot more aggressive power than my Ryzen 7940HS now😢, but with higher PL setting I admit.
I Love mini PCs. Even though the heatsink is huge, the temperatures are really high. The ports are not symmetrical. They are above the whole body, so I think it is not very useful if you put it on vertical to use the Webcam. The screen is interesting but not really useful right now. I would like a white or silver version as well. I'm not sure if this kind of devices are worthy, because they are so expensive and the CPU is soldiered to the motherboard , so you can't change it.
8:20 the Bloatware now cones included in WIN 11!!! Really, really bad. I saw a video of one using wireshark on first bootup... a OEM WIN 11 setup calls a lot, and I mean a lot of DNS at first startup. And not just MSFT services! Imho you cannot use WIN 11 without patching first.
It is HILARIOUS how it beats the 780M in synthetic benchmarks alone. Like...if there was any better example why they are full of poop, I don't know it.
@@Techtablets Hmmm. Strange. Just now I compared the CPU with the Ryzen 7 8840HS and cpu-monkey says the iGPU performance is better than the 780M in the 8840HS. Wonder why?
I guess that if you can take full advantage of the versatility then it might be a worthwhile look. The whole sub name thing from the company makes no sense to me.
