Ah summer... I remember that! Just finished lighting the fire and I have my cold hands wrapped around a hot cup of coffee as the outside temps hover around zero at 4:45am. Thanks for the warming video Mario! 🙂
It's amazing what kind of geo and temperature range we cover in this little group of 3 here ;) 40c in winter? Brazil seems to be as broken as the rest of our globe... hope your fine Mario. And Bruce, starting up a fireplace and coffee sound quite good. I try to carpe diem as much as possible here in the summer since it will end eventually. Embrace the change, "life in the moment" is a bit too much now ;) Greets!
@Rcschim I'll throw my two penneth in the ring, it's been windy & raining of & on in the UK, but its been reasonably warm with it. I've hardly fliwn all year what with weather, family commitments & my health. A year to forget. 😢 But at least we haven't had the fires and crazy stuff that have decimated areas & communities.
Finally got to test out this tune. As somebody who is on his first plane, I knew nothing about what kind of tune I should be going for, so having this one perform so well has really helped me gain perspective. So much less shaky!
Hi, nice to read this helped you! I just found those from another guy and tested them. looking forward to spring when I will get out this bird again (now in the winter if at all I fly my 7" and 10" LR drones). greets, Mario
Pyrodrone 2408.5 1622kv with 6x6 APC prop for ludicrous speed. Drone motors only get you so far though with efficiency. I can get 40 min of flying on a 900kv 4s with 21600 li-ions and 10" APC prop on a 50" custom cut wing
Interesting find on the roll pids, might give that a try. I'm using the stock 7042 prop too (Gemfan Flash) with a T-motor AS2317 1400kv, it's a little bit heavier than your motor, but it helps to get the cg on the right spot as i'm using a 4s2p 6800mAh li-ion pack. It flies great with this setup and up to a hour.
Hey! :) thanks for sharing your build! JFYI: at 2:41 you launched with spinning propeller... A few week ago I did the same and seriously damaged my finger! And yes, many time before I hand't have any problem with it.... now only protective gloves and always have medical kit.
I'm now on my 3rd Dolphin. This is such a well behaved airframe, I will always have one in the hangar....hopefully. I use a 2826 2200kv driving an 7.5x4.5 folding prop on 4S = 186kph😊
Thanks a bunch for all the tips, Mario! 😃 I don't know if those fans would make much difference, but there are esc fans that are strong as heck! And I already found them with 20x20mm, 25x25mm and 30.5x30.5mm mounting holes! Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
@@Rcschimneed a way for heat to get out and cool air to come in, no point circulating heated air, the added fan motor and battery are big sources of heat too. I would carve out the top cover and raise up the air unit till the fins are exposed to open air.
Excellent video! you gave good tips for the Dolphin. Also, thanks for mentioning me and my channel :-) I have additional tips, specifically about how to cool the O3 airunit. Instead of using an active element, such as fan, I like to use a passive mean, such as an larger nose air intake. I designed such nose and I will share the design in a following comment. Regarding the 6x4x3 prop with the 6S configuration, I do it all the time, and it give me a very decent speed and power. You just need to use the right ESC for it, as 35A ESC would not be capable of handling the required power. I use 45A esc. You should have the current draw in the flight controller log, so you can see how close are you to the limit of your esc, especially during takeoffs, where the current draw tend to be maximal. Lastly, my channel name is pronounced like the French word 'étage' 🙂
Hi, have i missed the upcoming comment as i am in the planning of building an atomrc dolphin with an o3 unit. That's why I am especially interested in the passive cooling
Good info. I am in the process of building a Dolphin. Using a 3540 1260 KV with a 8x8 prop and a 60 amp ESC with the Matek F405WTE on INav. Should be a really fast combination.
Nice hanger/workbench update on how the Dolphin is holding up to lots of summer flying. It's looking stylish in the opening to this video. Great colour combo for spotting in the air when formation flying. On Thingiverse I did see a "wingtip winglets" 3d-print design listed. There are also 3d printed versions of the canopy, that could be modified to provide better O3 cooling. Didn't spot any with a NACA air inlet. With cooling, the outlet is as important, or more so than inlet ... so air can escape. (also larger outlet cross section avoids pressure buildup, which could mess with FC pressure sensor for altitude). The ATOMRC Penguin has FPV nose option witch offers good VTx cooling. Would have been a smart design decision if ATOMRC made such a FPV nose interchangeable between the Dolphin, the Swordfish and the Penguin. Have been wondering if such is the case? A possible option, even if need to design an adaptor/spacer between fuselage and the FPV nose.
Thanks man! I had more time to use my zhiyun m3 gimbal on the Sony cam for the intro. I should get the penguin eventually, will see how good the fpv cooling nose works there. Maybe I can 3d print the penguin nose for the Dolphin?
NACA (ish) intake fitted. I removed the ESC grill on this one. ESC is 80A and deep internal :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YF6MQ7ULrt4.html
After i added the air vents in the back cover the overheat warnings are no more, the airflow removes the hot air from inside, i also added a 4 cm heatsing with thermal paste and 2 icecream sticks(1cm long) hotglued at 45 degrees angle near hitsink to better hit the heatsink with cool Air. I also removed the wooden GoPro holder for better airflow entering the nose.
Yup, 3 weeks ago burnt my second dolphin on its maiden. Did autolaunch and by the time in leveled out 8 seconds later I had no thrust and took me a few seconds to realise what happened.
My Walksnail VTX will be mounted outside in the airflow...Its half the thickness and weight of the 03 I guess too. That big sink and now a fan too?...Put it out in the fresh airstream, end of problem. All that heating will be shortening its service life....🤔😳😳😏🇬🇧
Thanks for the mention! 😄 I posted updated settings I've been using in this video, which keeps level flight better for me: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L22D5T_3JKU.htmlsi=fM8C-Smh2r2LAz5Y
Hi and thanks for all the video about the Dolphin, very interesting ! I'm flying Quad-drones for some times and I'm quite new to wings. After 2 weeks and 20 Lipo this morning the original motor 2306 AtomRC burnt ! I 1/ A friend gave me a Velox 2808 1950Kv and Told me to buy a ESC 65A so I searched and found a Skywalker 60A (look big) is a good idea ? 2/ Can I fly 4S with the original prop or should I adjust ? 3/ If I switch to 6s for speed what kind of prop Should I use ? 5" ? 6" ? Any advice ? Sorry for all the question I'm quite a noob to wings, but I like so much flying with this dolphin :)
AZURE 6145 three blades or Gemfan Flash 7042 two blade is the tip s friend gave me. I only had normal 6x4x3 blades dalprop and they stalled when using 6s, so I stuck with 4 cells which is plenty of power with the 2600mah lipo.
Field for flying, do you own? Rent from farmer? Community parkland? Who performs maintenance? Netting for spectators is pragmatic move, much like MLB (Major League Baseball) in USA was forced to erect fan safety netting. Folks were injured over the years by errant foul balls hit into stands.. and the occasional broken bat causing real injuries.
We are a little club and rent it from a farmer. We are around 20guys and change each week on the lawnmower. Sometimes I like to hide behind this net if I don't trust the RC friend in command ;)
Great! You've put together a really nice setup! Good for you! You keep the place standing tall! Oh yeah, there's always that one member that has everybody diving into a foxhole! "Incoming!" @@Rcschim
How is the range with the dji o3 antenna mounted horizontal ? Mine now is sitting inside the plane vertical but at 2 km away i had some stutter frames, the bitrate was ok just the images stuttered a little bit i im considering taking it outside. Im scared about the mount like you have the lateral side of the plane where the antenna is installed has less signal strength.
Excellent question. I’m new to all this stuff , getting towards the end of my build. I’ve been watching videos day and night :). I’m not sure about the antenna placement, but I think I might have heard there were some settings where you can trade distance for latency.
I am struggling with the motor mount for the f90. Are you mounting that on the plywood still? It obviously won’t work with this one, did you need to modify it. Sorry if this is basic, but I am pretty new and am struggling with both the hardware for the Dolphin and the t motor hardware (I don’t think any screw driver I know of will work with these screws).
Hi RCSchim, danke dir für dieses Video. Top!
Mach weiter so, happy flyin` Grüßle, Axel
@@Rcschim Danke! Maiden war klasse! Was ein toller Flieger!
I bought a little PC fan but never installed it, not been flying the Wing much in the last few months. More quads, sorry... But with decent airflow and I guess 2.7k instead of 4k it worked reliable. Just increased the hole in the nose and led the air directly to the air unit.
I don't suppose you have the autolaunch settings you are using in any video? I just changed to the F90 and crashed on autolaunch. I think my settings are too high and overtorqued it. Yours just flew away practically with zero roll, very impressive.
set nav_fw_launch_velocity = 300 set nav_fw_launch_accel = 1863 set nav_fw_launch_max_angle = 90 set nav_fw_launch_detect_time = 40 set nav_fw_launch_idle_motor_delay = 1000 set nav_fw_launch_motor_delay = 100 set nav_fw_launch_spinup_time = 100 set nav_fw_launch_end_time = 2000 set nav_fw_launch_min_time = 0 set nav_fw_launch_timeout = 15000 set nav_fw_launch_max_altitude = 0 set nav_fw_launch_climb_angle = 25 set nav_fw_launch_manual_throttle = OFF set nav_fw_launch_abort_deadband = 100 set nav_fw_launch_thr = 1850 set nav_fw_launch_idle_thr = 1400 set nav_fw_launch_thr = 1700 set nav_fw_launch_idle_thr = 1000 set nav_fw_launch_thr = 1700 set nav_fw_launch_idle_thr = 1000
@@Rcschim Absolute gentleman, thank you so much. From first glance those are actual very similar to mine, I also have it spin up before throw. I did have my climb angle set to 30, and perhaps together with slightly bad throw it just rolled over. I will try these exact ones though in the coming days and report back. Waiting on the glue to dry :) I just noticed, are these not the same 3 settings? set nav_fw_launch_thr = 1850 set nav_fw_launch_idle_thr = 1400 set nav_fw_launch_thr = 1700 set nav_fw_launch_idle_thr = 1000 set nav_fw_launch_thr = 1700 set nav_fw_launch_idle_thr = 1000 I ask because from memory I think I had idle at 1400 then spun to 1800, which I am guessing was why I over torqued. Just wanting to check your idle/launch value.
Sorry about the repeated setttings, those are the values from 3different battery profiles, the first is the one i use. (I've filtered the nav settings in excel...) One thought tho: please make sure your stability settings are correct (if you are in angle mode, double check that the fc corrects in the correct direction. You can make -values in the mixer and invert servos and every thing looks correct in acro, but when the plane wants to stabilize it flips over....
@@Rcschim I usually take off in Horizon mode. I think you mean just check if I hold the plane to check if the flight surfaces move in the correct way to oppose the roll? I will double check it next time I power up, but I assume since I have flown this plane over 25 times at the point it is good. Though I can never rule out an accidental parameter change. Likely just a terrible throw (too high) and the climb angle just a little too much that it stalled out.
@Rcschim, did you end up adding a fan to cool down the air unit in your Dolphin? I copied your set up (parts) because i like how you presented your system set up. It makes it easy for a noobie like to confidently get into planes. Been flying drone for years and i want to start rc plane. Practicing on simulator and slowly buying the parts for a new build. thank you.
I bought some, but haven't installed them yet. Cut a bigger hole in the nose to have more air intake there. Added a little "ramp" infront of my foam seat where the O3 "sits" to have the airflow better. Guess my air scoop sitting behind the (turbulent air) O3 cam isn't great to suck in air there - so the nose with a bigger hole was better I guess. will see in hot summer temps if I need to change this. added fan has the bonus of worry free preparation before launch (for exempl if you wait for a friend to be ready). with active fan it will not overheat while just sitting there. Other method: a little switch to turn on O3 in the last second before starting...
@@Rcschim thank you for the update and tips on your build. I've been watching lots of Inav videos and how folks build their rc planes. This is all to me and i will need lots of help from time to time. At this point I'm waiting for the parts and still deciding if i should put together a LI-On battery pack or just go with the tradional LIPO.
I used 18650 liIon packs on the dolphin, with 3000mah, that’s ok for cruising and long flight, but for flying a bit faster and more confident, a 2500mah 4s lipo felt better (more punch).
I would like to use your pid value if u dont mind since my auw is 770, bit heavier than urs, im using 2306 motor 2500kv 5055 propeller, 4s setup...i will tweak lil bit but using your pid as base value in pid profile 3...do you add any value on fw_ level_ trim? -danial-
@@Rcschim Thank you so much. Lost the rear hatch on my dolphin last month without a good catch so this is great. Thankfully I've two dolphins so one hatch does both now 🤣
So, f90 tmotor 1500kv its good when use it with 4s and 6s? And using 7inch props? I plan to upgrade the esc to 60A, and using 6s1p liion 21700, what do you think? Thanks
Yep, the motors is really good. 7inch and 6cell might be too much. I didn't try it since the calc said no, and I don't to fly carefull on the throttle so the system doesn't overheat or die. Currently it works efficient, but also has plenty punch and can give me both: longrange 25mins or full speed action 10min on that 2600mah 4cell
@Rcschim i see Visma (one of the youtuber using dolphin with 6s and 7inch props) when he did launch, dolphin went Roll too much, , so, using 21700 4s1p with F90 1500kv and 6inch would be great?
@@erlandfpv if you use 4cell you can stay with the 7x4.2 prop that came wit the plane. I always rely on the INAV autolaunch - works like a charm. smaller props have less power on launch so you can get in troublesome situations. 21700 Liions seem like a really good choice - I didn't find good ones to buy, just have the 18650 4cell Lions - but they are ok as well. greets, Mario
