Atomstack sent out their X40 Max laser, sporting a 24/48w diode laser head and an 800 x 400mm frame! The 800mm is the width which makes me excited to use this for cutting long balsa sheets for my model aviation hobby. In this video I'll test out it's cutting and engraving power on various materials then run some balsa wood through it on some mock-up airplane parts.

Great review Steve! That is a really sweet diode laser. Holy cow 48 watts! Where will it end? 👍🏻

It's getting crazy with the combining of diode emitters for these laser modules. Atomstack has already launched a 70w module and laser this quarter. Hoping to check that one out in the near future too.

I love the size of this thing. Looking at upgrading from my longer ray 5 (great laser still) but im outgrowing it.

Thanks! I try to put realistic tests in these videos so people get a good idea of what the laser can do compared to the advertised specs.

great video. I have the same laser did you know you can use marking points to make an object as long as you want regardless of the bed size you have.

Yes, the print and cut feature will allow you to tile work for longer items. It's an option, but also takes extra time. A great option when you can't afford a larger working area, or something it just that ridiculously big! Thanks for checking it out!

How did you get past the head sag? Mine is so bad that i have a hard time setting the focal. distance. Front where orange window is super tight and back is 2mm from touching. Tried some pencils tonight and wasn't even close to flat top of pencil 😢
@Vintauri
@Vintauri 7 месяцев назад
I did not have a noticeable sag in my laser head. Make sure that the screws holding the linear rods on the Z axis are tight both on top and bottom. I did notice those were loose and created some play until I tightened them down.

Great review! I'm still tweaking settings, but your video helps a lot. I do have an issue with the Y-axis on the right side. It has quite a bit of wobble compared to the left side, especially when etching/cutting circles on the right side. They come out very distorted. I suspect belt tension, but haven't had the guts to try to change it. That long arm on the Max seems fairly flexible.
@Vintauri
@Vintauri Месяц назад
Belt tension is the most likely culprit here but also check the eccentric nuts. None of the wheels should be able to move freely, if they do it can add some wobble to that end.

I just set one of these (non max version) up yesterday to replace my 5 year old Atomstack. 5w I think. What a difference, in all aspects. There's some great info in this video for settings, I need to start looking at those now I don't have to just run at 100% and hope. Thanks for the video.

The one thing I caught when you were showing the examples- some were in metric, some in Imperial on the intervals. Really nice video showing off this beast of a diode laser! I've got a 10 watt sculpfun s30 Pro with the 900x900 expansion, added drag chain, enclosure and extraction fan. I can't wait to upgrade to a more powerful laser- for my diode I'm upgrading to the 30 watt that sculpfun has but I'm more looking forward to my first CO2 laser- I am really wanting to be able to cut clear acrylic, looking to get something between 60-80 watts to start with CO2 wise. That's all assuming an I am able to profit though, so we'll see- so far things are looking very promising with the Miniature buildings I've been creating. I'm allllmost ready to open up my shops on various platforms- starting off selling 1:64 scale model buildings- that's hotwheels scale, so far I have 4 modern Home kits that I'm preparing for sale right now and I'll be doing a lot of miniature stuff in the future to various scales along with tons of other stuff- that's just where I'm starting. I LOVE lasers! Wish I'd gotten into this stuff a long time ago. Anyway, nice video! It motivates me even more to get some income going so I can move up to higher powered lasers which will greatly increase efficiency! One thing about Atomstack products is that, from what I've come to understand, it requires Internet access and uses cloud storage. That's a giant downside to their products for Me, a deal breaker for Me. Maybe I'm wrong, though that's what I've heard. I hope I am wrong, their products seem great other than that one thing, local storage needs to be standard.
@Vintauri
@Vintauri 7 месяцев назад
I do mix it up between imperial and metric depending on what I'm working on. Sometimes I forget to switch it back. Finding a niche to work in is a great way to develop a laser based business. The miniature buildings and scenery sounds like a great option for you, and that you are building a starting portfolio before jumping in is a good idea! A Co2 will help improve production times as well. Lots of options out there, so really dial in what your needs are for working area and software. Atomstack focuses on the diode lasers right now and as far as I know, they are all GRBL based and can use lightburn locally with no internet connection needed. GlowForge and a few other Co2 manufacturers utilize cloud based software that limits you to internet connectivity for use. However others use Lightburn or have offline software as well. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Got the x40 about a week ago, was wondering if you had issues with air assist? I have lightburn. Wired air assist according to manual, nothing works. If I plug power brick into air assist it works but laser does not. Any fixes? Contacted Atomstack no word. I may just get a 110v air assist and plug in. I know you reviewed it. Thanks for any help.
@Vintauri
@Vintauri 5 месяцев назад
I have not had any issues with the built-in air assist. If you have a multimeter you could check the voltage output of the wire going from the control box to the air pump. That might help narrow down the issue.

You can make a 4 x 36” design fairly easily by making your tool line 4x36” then add your pieces. When you go to cut the design out, highlight the pieces that fall into the actual cut size, the rotate the design and the wood both 180 degrees and then highlight the rest of the pieces to cut and start. Don’t change anything else and you can do all of it. I use this technique with my XTool to cut 12x19” or 12x24”.
@Vintauri
@Vintauri 7 месяцев назад
Yep, that is a way to do it in multipule jobs as well. I'd have to raise the laser higher to allow some passthrough space on the sides, as with the stock height the wheels come down too low. I'll also have to factor that into my enclosure design to allow the material to have some pass-through space.

Hi. A question about a problem I have (atomstack s40 + lightburn 1.0) It does not print images, with any choice (Jarvis, Stuki etc.) The laser head starts, performs the movements but the diodes do not light up. But the same image is printed correctly with LaserGrbl (so I exclude a technical problem) How to set on Lightburn? Thanks if you give me some advice
@Vintauri
@Vintauri 5 дней назад
Check your power and speed settings for the layer your design is on. It might be set too low power. I would also run a material test grid on engraving with lightburn to test the firing from 10-100% power and a variety of speeds.
@blackdragon8605
@blackdragon8605 4 дня назад
@@Vintauri Thanks for your kind reply. I also set it to 100%, but the diodes do not light up. Also in the settings where it would be possible to set the minimum and maximum power to better engrave the gray gradients, the minimum power is disabled for adjustments. But I am comforted that with laser grbl it works (but the program is not to my liking). I have to work on it, also because with the previous Atomstack s10, everything was fine....

Great Video ! I have a longer B1 30 watt and just bought the extension kit. Still have to put it together. Can you recommend and possibly do a video on a compatible camera for the larger workspace. All the videos i see are for your standard sizes without extension kits. After i install my Kit workspace will be 450 x 850. Not sure on what degree of the camera i should get so i have full view of the workspace. Height is not an issue i have not designed an enclosure yet until i figure out compatible camera. It appears that most cameras work well with square workspace and issues with large rectangular work space. I need help. Your Chanel is awesome i learned so much already. Keep up the great work 😊. Any help much appreciated. David - Las Vegas

Nice video. Bummer it doesn't have autofocus / powered z-axis.
@Vintauri
@Vintauri 7 месяцев назад
I like autofocus and a powered Z-axis when they do it right. Some of them create complexity that negates it's usefulness. I believe the new 70w laser from them has it so hopefully it works well and is incorporated into more lasers as time goes on.
