Before it was done in Sam Mendes' 1917, Joe Wright captured the horrors of war in a single take in his 2007 drama Atonement, which takes place partly in Dunkirk.
What is Atonement about?
Atonement (2007) - Synopsis: Briony Tallis falsely accuses her sister's lover, Robbie, of a crime, after she catches them in a compromising position.
From the award-winning director of Pride and Prejudice (Joe Wright) comes a stunning, critically acclaimed epic story of love. When a young girl catches her sister in a passionate embrace with a childhood friend, her jealousy drives her to tell a lie that will irrevocably change the course of all their lives forever. Academy Award® nominee Keira Knightley and James McAvoy lead an all-star cast in the film critics are hailing "the year's best picture" (Thelma Adams, US Weekly).

One of the most impressive and haunting sequences in British cinema. Dario Marianelli's music here breaks your heart as you remember all those who never made it back and all those who did but were so horribly scarred. The sequence was famously filmed on Redcar beach with the locals as extras. This morning at 9 am (23 11 22) the blast furnace at the steel works that can be seen in the background was demolished by controlled explosion and the last vestiges of Redcar's biggest employer was no more. I guess as well as being an Elegy for Dunkirk this is now an Elegy for Redcar...

I was an extra on this scene for 3 days, when they start to shoot the horses you see a group of men running across the screen, i was in that group wearing a really heavy over coat near the back. Absolutely amazing experience.

I love Christopher Nolan's movie but this is feels more like Dunkirk during the retreat. *Dunkirk* captures the ticking clock and anxiety, but *Atonement* captures the British spirit and Drive to return home alive. 10 Days waiting for boats, being raided by planes, throwing anything you could at the water to make makeshift pontoons to reach the boats, starving just miles away from home, dying of thirst with salt water next to them...

A film not even about Dunkirk on a £20million budget doing a better job of Dunkirk than a film about Dunkirk on a £150million budget.

It’s called the power of cgi. A lot of this is computer generated but looks so real. Chris Nolan is a egotistical director who is so full of himself

It’s a shame as my only fault with Dunkirk was it didn’t make the beaches of Dunkirk feel as rammed and as chaotic as this which is a shame as Nolan as he likes to use as little CGI as possible preferably none of he can manage it and all this is practical effects Dunkirk with its budget could of easily obtained this as in Dunkirk there was no CGI both in Nolan’s film from start to finish and with this scene

I can only imagine what it must have been like at that time and place... the British and Allied soldiers at Dunkirk (before the ‘Small Boats’ arrived)... I don’t know if this accurately portrays the events of that time but it would certainly appear to do so...

2:14 Drop Thy still dews of quietness Till all our strivings cease Take from our souls the strain and stress And let our ordered lives confess The beauty of Thy peace The beauty of Thy peace Breathe through the heats of our desire Thy coolness and Thy balm Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire O still, small voice of calm O still, small voice of calm

This is an amazing book and film. I think this is the most remarkable scene I have ever seen seen in a film, and some people do not even recognise it is one scene.

If They had left the horses there, the germans couldve used them for fighting. You dont want the enemy to have free "supplies“ i guess. Oft it is cruel but its part of war.

Because most German Infantry Divisions were largely still horse drawn. Unpleasant it might have been, but it was in effect the same as disabling the motor transport.

That scene is awful. For a start, Lancastria was sunk at St. Nazaire on 17 June. Dunkirk had ended almost two weeks earlier. In addition, air support was not refused, although it was not as effective as perhaps it might have been. I thought the recent 'Dunkirk' movie was riddled with inaccuracies, but hadn't seen this one, which brought them to a whole new level, at least where the events surrounding the Dunkirk evacuation were concerned.
@johnnewton4461
@johnnewton4461 3 дня назад
No one CARES about the historical inaccuracies here because that’s not the point of this movie or the scene ! This is drama, not WWII nerd time.
@dovetonsturdee7033
@dovetonsturdee7033 3 дня назад
@@johnnewton4461 Then why employ an historical adviser on the movie if the adviser doesn't know his facts? Actually, quite a number of people do care for accuracy. In this case, the reference contributed precisely nothing to the story. You are evidently a most important individual, if you think that you speak for 'everyone' of course.
