Three world class musicians... and the sum of the parts is greater than the three of them combined. That is not only great chamber music, it's also what makes the ATOS Trio so tremendous in my opinion.

Very very good playing by all three! What a tone produced by the Violinist and the cellist! Great Music by the great composer Beethoven! Thank God for sending such a great person in this world to enrich our lives! Bravo!!!

Now this I what I call making music. Absolutely superb performance of this trio. They also bring out something you don't often hear: Beethoven's refinement and lyricism, even in the Presto finale. Beethoven isn't just some pair of old hobnailed boots... and he loves pianissimo just as much as he loves fortissimo - as these players remind us. Bravi!!

I agree, I find the best performances of Beethoven combines extremes; almost pristine precision for the quieter and melodic parts, but extreme passion that's even a little "sloppy" for the fortissimo parts. When a performer can balance those perfectly, I think we are able to appreciate the music better and understand the tortured soul of Beethoven

Beethoven's first published work but already we can hear a great new musical presence.

Opus 1 is easily the greatest "I'm here, bitches" in Classical music.

You can already hear a clear difference between this and the style of Mozart's piano trios.

This actually wasn't Beethoven's first published work, he just thought it sounded so good he would make it Opus 1 No.1 :)

Maxwell Kaye There are huge differences which are very obviously evident: Beethoven’s trios were written for later pianos and using a very much more modern keyboard technique; the trios were almost chamber symphonies rather than divertimenti; the demands on the players far greater and more evenly spread. Haydn’s trios were largely written for very specific London commissions as sonatas for piano with violin accompaniment with the cello essentially used for textual sonority and reinforcing the bass; those of Mozart are closer to Beethoven and the Viennese market.

@@elaineblackhurst1509I only heard a Haydn Trio for the first time today (No 29). And was very surprised at how good it was, and original too. Especially the finale sounded very much like early Beethoven. I wasn’t expecting that at all, having heard how much better and more advanced Beethoven was, and how foolish Haydn had been to cast aspersions on the younger composer’s early attempts at Trio writing.

Played this Many years ago as a freshman in college, the violin part, that is, and it was one of the highlights of the year for me! Now that I'm nearing 70, would like to try it again May no longer have the same spunk but non-the-less would love to attempt it!

Go for it! I would say if you don't have the same spunk, then force it out of you. It might be sleeping, but I'm sure it's still in there somewhere!

IN this first publication of Beethoven, all questions reled to dependence/:independence of strings versus piano are clearly identified. There is a major difference with Haydn's trios, which had a quite other objective.

Observation: composer comparisons that do not identify musical borrowings, influence, etc. are by nature specious. These are not musicians competing for any laurels. And the performers are often magnificent crafts-people that seek to enlighten listeners. One is constantly amazed that the majority of commenters believe in my team vs. their team. There are also writers here that will distinctly enrich your understanding. Try to be the latter.

Sound is lovely, but the HD video is overexposed, until for no particular reason the background suddenly turns blue, the automatic camera aperture must close slightly and the skin of the attractive violinist becomes almost the correct colour. The overhead spotlight seems too strong and should have been toned down. But ah! The music is sublime.
