Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) plays a pivotal role in aviation avionics and air traffic control. Unlike primary radar, which detects the presence of aircraft but provides limited information, SSR establishes a two-way communication link with aircraft transponders. When an SSR system sends out interrogations, aircraft transponders respond with unique identification codes and additional data, such as altitude. This exchange allows air traffic controllers to precisely identify and track aircraft in their airspace.
SSR significantly enhances the efficiency and safety of air traffic management. The information gathered from transponder replies enables controllers to maintain a clear picture of the airspace, preventing conflicts and facilitating smoother coordination between aircraft. The altitude information provided by SSR is particularly valuable, as it helps ensure vertical separation between planes, a crucial aspect of aviation safety.
In essence, SSR acts as a cooperative tool that enables aircraft to actively participate in their surveillance. This technology has become integral to modern aviation systems, contributing to the overall effectiveness of air traffic control and fostering a safer environment for air travel worldwide.
