"ATR 42-600 Cockpit View: Full Flight Experience | Maldives Adventure | Must Watch | Fly with Magnar"
Join us on an incredible journey aboard an ATR 42-600 as we fly from Malé Airport to Dharavandhoo Airport in the stunning Maldives. This video features an immersive cockpit view, captured with multiple cameras, offering you a pilot's perspective on this scenic route. Additionally, you'll see footage from an identical flight taken a few days later, providing a comprehensive flight experience.
Dharavandhoo Airport, located 60 NM from Malé, serves both local communities and luxury resorts in Baa Atoll. Opened in 2012, the airport boasts a 1,200-meter runway. The terminal is conveniently situated within walking distance of the village, allowing locals to check-in, return home for a meal, and come back just in time for their flight.
My journey with Villa Air began in 2012 as an instructor, where I enjoyed long stops at Dharavandhoo. These stops often included speedboat trips to a nearby resort for lunch and snorkeling. After three years, I moved on to new opportunities, but in 2022, I returned to the Maldives to fly with Island Aviation Services Ltd., also known as Maldivian.

It's understandable that you couldn't include ATC communications due to regulations. Safety and confidentiality in aviation are critical, and it's important to follow those rules.

I'm curious - this is the first time that I have ever heard of ATC comms being somehow 'secret'. I can listen to those comms on my radios near to where I live, almost anywhere in the world via liveatc web sites, and on every single Aviation YT channel I have ever watched... until this one. I find it very, very puzzling that you omit ATC comms audio.

I was a pilot and instructor in Brazil with more than 10000 hours of flight time and I really get emotional watching your videos, as I have no experience with turboprops. The second screen you place, with the PFD and MFD, is spectacular, and the top view allows we to see the position of the power quadrant. Really genius your idea, we can see what we really want to see! My congratulations!! Note 1000 !!

Dear Captain Nordal, Thank you for taking us with you! I'm absolutely in love with this aircraft, especially the 72 variant. I flew with Finnair on a 72-500 in 2003 and in 2022 with Binter Canarias on a 72-600. I have to admit that i prefer flying with this type of aircraft than the big airliners like the A 320 or the B 777. I just feel safer in the ATR. I don't know why 😅 Maybe it's the humming sound of the turboprops. Two questions. Why did you receive a pushback here? Is it prohibited to perform it with the aircraft yourself on that airport? And question No 2. At 33:00 do you only brake with the reverse thrust or with the pedal too? Greetings from Germany
@FlywithMagnar
@FlywithMagnar 3 месяца назад
Hi. As a pilot, I prefer the 42 variant, because it is the original ATR. It is more nimble, has better performance, and it lands softer. Pushback is mandatory at Malé Airport, even when there is space to make a 180 turn under own power. This is mainly for safety reasons, but also to avoid the propellers from blowing dust towards passengers walking in front of the aircaft. For the same reason are we not allowed to use reverse. When I landed, I used light reverse and touched the brakes before the 180 turn at the end of the runway. If I had used full reverse and maximum braking, we would have stopped halfway down the runway. But there is no reson to do this, as the engines must cool down for at least 2 minutes after landing before they are shut down.

Hi Magnar, Thanks for the nice video :) Given the fact that the ATR (or maybe more turboprops?) has a 'prop brake', does that mean the ATR does not have an APU?
@FlywithMagnar

That is correct. Saves weight and maintanance costs.

Hi Magnar, I enjoyed watching your video seeing how different ATR operators fly, just a slight notice, how come at your operator you dont use told card for your operator? I dont think i could see any below the CDLS. And how come your acceleration altitude is so low? at my Operator we use 1000Ft AAL or depending on performance calculations
@FlywithMagnar
@FlywithMagnar 3 месяца назад
Do you mean the takeoff and landing data card? It is not required for ATR with glass cockpit. It is removed from the FCTM. Minimum acceleration altitude is 400 ft, and it is up to the operator to define it.
@swedishpotato756

@@FlywithMagnar ah thank you i didnt know that the told card wasnt required, at my operator we still use it on the 72-600,thank you for the information!

I can see you are using VNAV IAS mode for departure. I checked in FCOM and can see that it is used for SIDs where you have step climb restrictions. So I guess you have airports with this kinds of SIDs? How well does the aircraft transition from VNAV ALT to VNAV IAS after having flown a level segment? Usually I think the aircraft pitches too much if manually switching from ALT to IAS at a high speed (so I usually use PITCH HOLD if not in icing), so how well does the aircraft perform in the VNAV modes?
@FlywithMagnar
@FlywithMagnar 3 месяца назад
ATR is teaching pilots to use VNAV IAS as default mode for takeoff. The reason is that the crew may fly from airport where the SIDs have step climb restrictions. There are no such restrictions in the Maldives, but we use VNAV IAS anyway as it doesn't make any difference. Now and then, we fly to India or Sri Lanka, and there might be SIDs with step climb restrictions there. Anyway, it is better to have this habit than not. I have not flown the transition from VNAV IAS to VNAV ALT, but the transition from ALT mode to VNAV IAS mode is identical to using IAS mode.

Great video! Could you explain why an assisting CA required during t/o and landing?
@FlywithMagnar
@FlywithMagnar 3 месяца назад
The company has 2 cabin attendants on all flights, even when it is not required by the regulations. The ATR 42 has only one CA seat in the cabin, and therefore, assisting CA is seated on the observer seat during take-off and landing.
