The difference between a paperclip antenna and a VHF outdoor antenna is that you can receive a good signal from a greater distance more than 2 miles.

As shown in the video at 4:08, WPLG is over 17 miles away.

Where I am a paperclip works out to about 30 miles for some stations.

Did you see the guy that got multiple 4k Streams on ATSC1 19mbit by just usng better Codecs that TV stations refuse to use?

Yes. I made a video about this back in November. Skip to 3:02: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UHh3je4JUJA.html

You showed a snippet of an article calling for ATSC 3 on VHF, and that seems like the best way to roll it out. VHF lo became practically unusable with the change to ATSC 1 due to 8vsb modulation, but ATSC 3 cofdm modulation makes it usable again.

I agree! I wrote that article in February. Here’s the link if you want to check it out: wnyovertheair.com/news/opinion-lo-vhf-should-be-mandated-to-switch-to-atsc-30-first

VHF FM radio on cellphones only works if you plug in earphone cord as an VHF antenna. Cellphone makers will never add DRM ATSC 3.0 TV tuners to their cellphones.

Analog FM Radio degrades significantly above the noise floor, and fades completely at the noise floor. Digital signals can be sent below the noise floor, in higher quality, and can offer additional services in the same bandwidth. At the end of this RU-vid short, I show reception of an HD Radio signal operating on the VHF FM band, received with a paperclip from over 17 miles away: ru-vid.comxd2wA6k3f44?feature=share

It’s the half wave or quarter wave reception. That’s why I get the best results using my CM3020, 20’ high. At 68 miles away. I can’t get Lo VHF on anything else really. Sure it’s similar in band frequency to FM, but there’s a reason radios with FM have a telescoping antenna.

That's the best antenna ever! 🤣👍

It’s the Code Rate not the other parameters. 7/15 is great. My Nashville market used to use 11/15 and it was very difficult to lock QAM256. They changed to 9/15 and it’s way better.

WPLG has a minimum receive SNR of about 14 dB. It's not that much better compared to ATSC 1.0's 15.2 dB. The modulation and code rate configuration definitely helped to make the signal more robust, but the FFT size and Guard Interval are what makes the signal more immune to multipath, which was the main reception issue in the video.

When do you think we will get a sunset date.
@WNYOverTheAir
@WNYOverTheAir 6 месяцев назад
I'm not sure. 2027 is literally just the time that the FCC set to discuss a possible shutoff. They may decide to push it off again, or they may decide to set a sunset date. They wouldn't state a sunset date close to when/if they decide it. If they do decide on a sunset date in 2027 (which is definitely possible), I would think 2029 would be the sunset date at the earliest.

So in other words if they removed the stupid DRM encryption from ATSC 3.0 it would be worth bothering with.
@WNYOverTheAir

Keep in mind, not all broadcasters are deciding to implement DRM on their ATSC 3.0 channels. I’ve actually spoken to a few smaller broadcasters that are against ATSC 3.0 with DRM. DRM implementation is only coming from a handful of station owners that I’ve outlined in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8CaQsyuyUZg.html

DRM encrypted ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV is a total failure. Who cares about a failed TV DRM standard if no one is watching? RF is RF is the same as ATSC 1.0 for paperclip antenna stuff.
@kensmith5694

I agree. As channels switch to ATSC 3.0 with DRM it gets more and more likely that my TV set will go out to the curb on an "e-waste" day.

The few benefits of ATSC 3 which is wasted with DRM
@WNYOverTheAir
@WNYOverTheAir 6 месяцев назад
I would argue that these are major/game changing benefits. I disagree that ATSC 3.0 is wasted because of DRM. Not all broadcasters are implementing DRM, and many small broadcasters I’ve talked to are against DRM on ATSC 3.0. Most of the channels that contain DRM originate from the same few broadcasters: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8CaQsyuyUZg.html
